Abstract

This research was aimed to identify the need of the students of agriculture study program on English materials. This research focused in find out the most important English skills and Sub-Skills for the students of agriculture study program and find out the English topics are needed for the students of agriculture study program at SMK Negeri 2 South Bengkulu. The research used mix method (combine both qualitative and quantitative method). This research was conducted in Agriculture Vocational School 2 South Bengkulu (SMK Negeri 2 South Bengkulu). The data was taken from the assistance of curriculum, the English teachers, productive teachers and the alumni of SMK Negeri 2 South Bengkulu. The data was collected by using questionnaire and interview. The result of the research shows that: first, the most important English skills for the students of agriculture study program at SMK Negeri 2 South Bengkulu are Speaking and Reading Skills. Reading sub-skills classified as; reading in general comprehension, understanding the plan of the text, guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words, do skimming and scanning activities and understanding the organization of the text. Speaking sub-skills classified as; speaking with fluency, attention of choice and pronunciation and using the correct ways/ manners of speaking. Second, English topics for the students of agriculture were the English topics related to the agriculture term. The topics of reading were; reading the text of part of plants, reading the text of the technique of maintenance of plants and operating hart equipment farming. The topics of speaking were; do direct conversations related to agriculture terms, presenting the report of filed productive practice, describing of how to operate hard equipment farming and maintenance of the plants.

Abstract

This research was aimed to know how the teacher motivates her learners and to observe the activities which were applied by the teacher in Freedom Writers movie. The method was descriptive qualitative analysis. The data was taken from the movie and its scripts. The data collection technique was documentation meanwhile the technique of data analysis is content analysis. The research findings were as follows; 1). The teacher employed 10 different motivational strategies. 2). The researcher found the various ways how the teacher applied the strategies in the classroom, those were; by giving respect, love, care and always motivate her learners, playing game, using song’s lyrics, writing assignment, switching the learners’ seat, field trip, discuss with some informants and give the support to the learners who got failed in their evaluation. However, all the kinds of those teacher’s strategies to motivate the learners which found in the movie can be used as references for the teacher in aspiring to be good educators in the future. Further study is recommended for a deeper investigation into teachers’ motivational strategies and their used in the classroom activities.

Abstract

An Integrated English Syllabus is a syllabus that integrate one to several language skills of learning and teaching process. They cover elements of English skills, English materials, learning techniques, and so on. In this study, the researcher use Research and Development method by Sugiyono (2010). The purposes of this study are to find out the English skills and the English materials that really needed by Marine Science Students. In addition, focuses on developing an Integrated Syllabus with Marine Science context. In designing Integrated Syllabus the researcher use integrated model by Richard (2001). To collect the data the researcher use interview and questionnaire. The parcipants are 1 English lecturer, 1 Marine Science Lecturer, 2 stakeholders (Water and Marine Police at Pulau Baai Bengkulu and Employee at Marine Affairs and Fisheries at Bengkulu Province), and 8th semester Marine Science Students at Bengkulu University. The result of this study showed that the Marine Science students needs the four of English skills and English materials but  the most needed are writing and reading. Therefore, the researcher designed an Integrated Syllabus that is suitable with Marine Science Study Program especially at Bengkulu University. From the research, it can be seen that the English needs of marine science students at Bengkulu University. Then, the syllabus developed in this study can be used as a reference in preparing English courses in the Marine Science study program.

Abstract

The design of this research is quantitative-qualitative descriptive research. The purpose of this research are first to analyze the needs of oral and written communication in English of nautical students in SMKN 4 Bengkulu and second to analyze the implementation of the students’ need. The subjects of this research are students of SMKN 4 Bengkulu 12th grade, English teachers in SMKN 4 Bengkulu, graduates of Nautical Study Program, and the stakeholders in the field of maritime. In this study, researcher used the needs analysis to find what are the need of oral and written of English for nautical students grade XII in SMKN 4 Bengkulu. The instruments that used in this study are questionnaires and interview. The result of the needs of oral and written of English for nautical students grade XII in SMKN 4 Bengkulu is the materials, topics, and activities that support their activities especially speaking and writing to work in the maritime field with simplified material that is suitable for beginner level and the needs can be implemented in lesson plan through the activity like monologue, watching film about cruise ship, and singing, but it will not appropriate with the curriculum set by the government.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out English skills that the student needs in Pharmacy classes at Bengkulu University and design the appropriate English syllabus for the students according to their needs. This research method applied research and development (R&D). The population of this research consisted of 350 Pharmacy students, 1 Pharmacy lecturer, 1 English lecturer and 2 Pharmacists. Random sampling was used to select a sample of 50 pharmacy students and the total sampling technique was to take 2 lecturers and 2 pharmacists. The data were collected from a questionnaire adapted from Jatmiko, S.B. (2016) and an interview. The researcher analyzed the data by counting the percentage. The results of this research showed that listening skills gained 23%, speaking skills gained 28%, reading skills gained 25% and writing skills gained 24%. From this data it can be seen that the highest percentage is in speaking, but the percentage among other skills is not much different. Therefore, it can be concluded that according to the results of data analysis, the syllabus is designed based on an integrated approach that has been validated and discussed with several experts. Based on the results of the data analysis, a syllabus was designed based on an integrated approach which has been validated and discussed with several experts. It is suggested that further researchers can develop English for pharmacy materials based on the integrated English syllabus from this study

Abstract

This research investigated the current learning condition to support the need analysis of English materials for Islamic banking majors at vocational schools. Fifty students of Islamic banking majors and one English teacher were the participants in this study.  This study used a mixed-method research design. Researchers collected data from interviews and questionnaires. The researcher created a questionnaire based on the strengths and weaknesses of current situations reviewed from the English materials learning at Islamic banking major. This study found that the current learning condition in learning English at Islamic banking majors at SMKN 4 Lubuklinggau already used English textbooks following the 2013 curriculum, and more than half of the students are also enthusiastic about participating in English learning process. However, it does not meet the students’ and teachers’ needs in the area of learning materials. The English textbooks or materials used are not appropriate for the Islamic banking major. Keywords: Need Analysis; English Materials; Vocational School

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the most frequently used method in teaching English grammar at the senior high schools of Mukomuko regency and to reveal the reasons of using the most frequently used method. An explanatory mixed method design was carried out to collect and analyze the data quantitatively and qualitatively. Three instruments were used; Questionnaire, interview, and classroom observational checklist. Thirty-one English teachers filled out the questionnaire, four teachers were selected to be interviewed, and two of them were observed. The results of this study showed; first, Situational Language Teaching was the most frequently used method in teaching English grammar at the senior high schools of Mukomuko regency. Second, the English teachers implemented the most frequently used method for four reasons; 1) to encourage the students` motivation in learning the English language, 2) to facilitate the students to achieve the learning’s objective, 3) to teach English grammar to the students contextually, and 4) to evaluate the students` understanding about the material given. Based on the results, it seemed that the English teachers picked the method of teaching grammar based on its simplicity and effectiveness to activate the EFL teaching and learning process. Moreover, the result provides teachers more insight and reference regarding to the method in teaching English grammar and applied it into their teaching process

Abstract

This study aims to describe the translation strategy applied to translate the lyrics of the song "Water Under the Bridge" from English to Indonesian (https://translation-lirik-lagu-barat.blogspot.com/2015/12/water-under -bridge-adele.html) and to explain the quality of the translation in terms of correctness and acceptance of its meaning according to the original text. The method used is descriptive qualitative research; the data and data sources are the results of translating the song lyrics, and the research instruments used are documents and questionnaires. The research results show that based on the information data, the strategy used in the process of translating is a phonemic translation (25%), verse into process translation (25%), and interpretation (25%), which is often used in translating Adele's songs. It can be concluded that the method used is more oriented towards the target language because the use of translation techniques is more oriented towards the use of the target language. The overall results of the translation quality of songs in the accuracy category are inaccurate (1%), less accurate (33%), and accurate (66%). Meanwhile, the acceptability category is inaccurate (2%), less accurate (43%), and accurate (55%). So, the quality of the translation in the category of accuracy and acceptability of the translation is good according to the target language. The objectives of this research were to find out: the current learning condition in teaching grammar at the English Education Study Program of University of Bengkulu and the needs for Grammar in Spoken Discourse course. This research used a mixed-method design. One hundred and fourteen students on fourth semester engaged as the correspondent of the questionnaire while four grammar lecturers were selected as the participant of interview. To gather the data, the questionnaire and interview were deployed and were further analyzed by using simple statistical of data analysis. The findings found that in the current conditions in learning grammar at English Education Study Program of University of Bengkulu already meet with the students’ needs in area of method, media and evaluation of learning. Then, Quantifier, Comparison, Form of Other, Stating Preference, How to Connect Ideas, Gerund, Infinitives, Modal Auxiliaries, Expressing Ability; Advice, Necessity, Requests, and Suggestions were materials needed for Grammar in Spoken Discourse course. There is difference between current learning situation and need analysis result for Grammar in Spoken Discourse in the context of material. The material prepares more contextual.
