Abstract

The aim of this research present at determining; 1) the use of pop-up books improve students’s reading skills. 2) the students’ interests in using the pop-up book for reading skills. The subjects of this study were the students of the seventh-grade SMP Laniang Makassar totaling 15 students. The research used a pre-exprimental research design with a one group pre-test and post-test design and used two instruments. The tests carried out included pre-test, post-test and questionnaire. Data were collected through tests.. Based the result of the data after obtaining test scores and processed using the T-test formula in SPSS version 25. The results of this study were the average score of reading skill obtained by students sthrough the pre-test was 38.00 and post-test was 74.00 with sig (2-tailed) value is 0.00 < 0.05. Thos shows that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. So that, teaching reading skills using Pop-Up Book could improve reading skill students.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using Quizizz in improving students' vocabulary mastery at MA Ulul Albab Makassar, particularly for 10th-grade students in the Science (IPA) and Social Sciences (IPS) classes. The research questions addressed are as follows: (1) Can the use of Quizizz effectively enhance students' vocabulary mastery at MA Ulul Albab? (2) Are students interested in using Quizizz for learning English? A quantitative method with a pretest-posttest single-group design was employed in this study. The research instruments included tests and interviews. The sample consisted of two classes, namely, 10th-grade students in the IPA and IPS streams. Data collection was conducted through tests, classroom interaction observations, and documentation. The results of the study showed that the pretest and posttest scores were 48.7097 and 82.8710, respectively, indicating a significant improvement in students' vocabulary mastery after using Quizizz. Based on the survey results, Quizizz was proven to be effective in enhancing students' understanding of vocabulary at MA Ulul Albab. The interactivity and challenging game elements of this platform made students more interested and actively engaged in the learning process. The statistical analysis using the Paired Samples Test table indicated that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 < 0.05, thus rejecting H0 and accepting Ha. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the average scores between the Pre Test and Post Test, indicating that the Quizizz application effectively enriches the English vocabulary of 10th-grade students in the IPA and IPS streams at MA Ulul Albab Makassar.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine whether the use of idiomatic expressions in comic strips increased the mastery in eighth class of SMP Negeri 11 Huamual and to determine whether the used of idiomatic expressions in comic strips increased the motivation in eighth class of SMP Negeri 11 Huamual. This research used a quasi-experimental design involving two class groups. The population of this research used in eighth class students of SMP Negeri 11 Huamual which found 56 students. The sample of this research used students of class VIIIA which consisted of 28 students as the experimental class and 28 students of class VIIIB as the control class. The research instrument is a vocabulary test and questionnaire. The results of the research on the vocabulary test showed that there was a significant difference between the post-test of the experimental class and the control class. The average post-test value of the experimental class is 75.21, greater than the post-test value of the control class, which is 67.35, meaning that the average value obtained is a good qualification. Students' interest in understanding vocabulary increased through idiomatic expressions in comic strips using a Likert Scale.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify teachers' problems in the implementation of the “Kurikulum Merdeka” in English language subjects at SD Inpres 125 Bajeng in the 2023/2024 school year. In this research, researcher used a qualitative descriptive design. Researcher collected data through interviews with principals, homeroom teachers, and students in grades I, II, IV, and VI. The results of this research reveal that teachers lack understanding of learning models related to the “Kurikulum Merdeka”, and teachers still need time to adapt to the “Kurikulum Merdeka”. In addition, the teacher's English language skills are still lacking so the teacher states that there is a need for an English teacher with an English education background, the teacher also needs training related to the “Kurikulum Merdeka”, and inadequate English learning facilities. Furthermore, some factors inhibit the implementation of the “Kurikulum Merdeka”, such as internal factors and external factors. Internal factors consist of some students who show disinterest when learning English subjects, students who have difficulty in understanding learning materials and find the learning process uninteresting, mostly due to dissatisfaction with learning methods. Therefore, the external factors that inhibit the implementation of the "Kurikulum Merdeka” ‘consist of grade IV students who express their dissatisfaction with the English teaching methods used in their class and teachers’ lack of understanding in using technological media which results in a less-than-optimal learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of students' anxiety on speaking performance and the factors that cause students' anxiety on speaking performance. This research was conducted on the eleventh-grade students of SMAN 8 Maros academic year 2023/2024 using a qualitative approach with descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected by questionnaire, and interview. After analyzing the data the researcher found that the types of students' anxiety on speaking performance are Situation-specific Anxiety and Trait Anxiety are the dominant percentages than State Anxiety and the researcher also found the factors caused students' anxiety on speaking performance were Communication Apprehension (students have low intellectual, students also have difficulty with pronunciation and lack of vocabulary), Test Anxiety (students feel anxious during the speaking test because fear of failure, fear of bad grades and affecting the report card), and Fear of Negative Evaluation (students are anxious because they are afraid of being judged, and being laughed at by friends/teacher when they make mistakes).
