Abstract

This study explored the use of directive speech acts by the main characters in the film Barbie and the Three Musketeers. The primary objective was to identify and analyze the types of directive speech acts employed, drawing on Searle's theory. A descriptive qualitative approach was utilized to dissect the dialogue in the film, which revealed nine distinct types of directive speech acts: requesting (12 instances), ordering (11 instances), commanding (8 instances), advising (7 instances), challenging (5 instances), permitting (4 instances), inviting (4 instances), begging (4 instances), and prohibiting (2 instances). The analysis highlighted how these speech acts were integral to the characters' interactions and their quest to become female musketeers, a role traditionally seen as male-dominated. The directive speech acts reflected the characters' emotions and propelled the narrative forward, illustrating their determination, resourcefulness, and collaboration. Challenging societal stereotypes, the characters used directive speech acts to assert their agency and challenged the notion that musketeering was exclusively for men. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how language functioned in animated films to shape character development and advance thematic elements.

Abstract

This study, titled Positive Politeness Strategies Used by Michelle Obama on NPR’s YouTube, analyzes the positive politeness strategies employed by Michelle Obama in her interview with Juana Summers on NPR’s Michelle Obama Talks Parenting, Partnership, and Turning Your Rage Into Change, released on YouTube on November 15, 2022. Using Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory of positive politeness, this qualitative research identifies thirteen strategies, including intensifying interest, presupposing and asserting, attending to the interlocutor, seeking agreement, exaggerating interest or approval, presenting disagreement, asserting or presupposing shared beliefs, being optimistic, offering and promising, giving empathy and understanding, using identity markers, and joking. These strategies enable Michelle Obama to create a positive public image, build rapport with the host, and facilitate a meaningful dialogue. The study underscores the value of positive politeness in public communication to foster audience connection and engagement.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the functions of flouting maxims in The Jungle Book movie using a pragmatic approach. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes Mowgli's utterances to reveal four types of flouting maxims: quantity, quality, manner, and relation. The most frequently flouted maxim is relation, highlighting Mowgli's strategies to survive and stay safe in the forest. Conversely, Mowgli rarely flouts the maxim of quality due to his sense of gratitude toward those who saved him. The research also identifies three functions of flouting maxims: competitive, collaborative, and convivial. Among these, the collaborative function is the most common, as Mowgli often seeks cooperation with various animals. In contrast, the convivial function is rarely used, reflecting his effort to maintain politeness and avoid causing offense. This study provides a concrete example of the application of pragmatic theory, particularly the cooperative principle, demonstrating its relevance in understanding characters' communication strategies in films.

Abstract

Background. Visual culture plays a pivotal role in shaping public discourse, influencing ideologies, and reflecting societal norms. Art, media, and other visual forms serve as critical tools for conveying messages that not only represent but also construct and reinforce dominant power structures, beliefs, and identities. As visual communication becomes increasingly pervasive in the digital age, understanding its impact on ideology is essential for unpacking how societal values are formed and contested. The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between visual culture and ideology, focusing on how art and media shape public discourse. Purpose. This research aims to investigate how visual representations influence political, social, and cultural ideologies and contribute to the reinforcement or subversion of power structures in society. Method. A qualitative, critical discourse analysis was used to examine a range of visual media, including artworks, advertisements, social media content, and news media. The analysis focuses on identifying ideological messages embedded in visual representations and their role in shaping public understanding and opinion. Results. The study finds that visual culture plays a crucial role in shaping ideological discourse, with art and media acting as vehicles for both reinforcing and challenging dominant societal values. Key themes identified include identity construction, political power, and the commodification of social issues. Conclusion. The research concludes that visual culture is an influential force in the construction of ideology. Understanding the ideological functions of visual media provides crucial insights into how societies negotiate power, identity, and values in a visually-driven world.
