Abstract

This research aims to describe senior high school students’ perspectives about the use of learning media in English language teaching context and to investigate the sorts of interactive and educative learning media in English language teaching. This research worked on descriptive research design, both qualitative and quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire. This study involved 171 senior high school students who voluntary filled in the questionnaire. The research findings reveal that the use of learning media to support learning process needs to be improved since the media used needs to be adjusted with the current trend of learning that is technology-based learning media. In addition, Powerpoint slides, video, film, online or traditional games were found as interactive and educative learning media from the students’ perspectives. The students are excited when the teachers are presenting media in their learning process, even though it only simply presented through Powerpoint. In other words, learning media has an essential role to support effective learning atmosphere for the students.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ motivation and learning outcome in English by usingHypnolearning method. This research is a classroom action research (CAR) whereresearchers along with collaborators working together in designing learning scenarios,action, data analysis and reflection. Subjects of the study were students of class VIII SMPN23 Pekanbaru academic year 2015/2016 which the total number was 28 students. Thisresearch was conducted in two cycles following the procedure classroom action research -planning, action, observation and reflection. The first cycle consisted of five meetings, whilethe second cycle consisted of four sessions. Data acquisition was done through observation,field notes, interview and test. The study states that the method hypnolearning improvedmotivation and learning outcomes of English. Indicators increased motivation and learningoutcomes can be seen from the active participation of students in the learning process andlearning outcomes can be seen from the test evaluation. An increase of 25% from 71.43% incycle 1 to 96.43 in cycle 2. The average value of the class also experienced a good increase72.85% to 83.85%. Hypnolearning also made students more relaxed and confident in thelearning process

Abstract

Penelitian ini diajukan untuk memperoleh informasi terkait dengan penggunaan media pada pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Menengah Atas, serta untuk mengetahui jenis media yang digunakan untuk mendukung terlaksananya pembelajaran yang edukatif dan interaktif pada konteks pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris berdasarkan berdasarkan perpektif guru bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian dekriptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk menggambarkan data-data yang telah dikumpulkan secara kualitatif melalui lembar kuesioner yang diberikan sekolompok guru-guru bahasa Inggris yang telah memiliki pengalaman mengajar bahasa Inggris selama 1-5 tahun di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan media pembelajaran yang diintegrasikan dengan teknologi sudah diterapkan oleh para guru, seperti menggunakan powerpoint slides, internet, komputer/laptop, film, permainan virtual dan tradisional. Selain itu, para guru mengemukakan bahwa media yang dipresentasikan untuk mendukung proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sangat mendukung meningkatkan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris peserta didik. Namun, para guru perlu untuk menggunakan bergam media pembelajaran yang terkait dengan perkembangan teknologi saat ini sehingga kegiatan pembelajaran dapat berlangsung lebih efektif dan bermakna.

Abstract

Podcasting adalah multimedia yang menyediakan banyak bahan otentik untukmendengarkan dan dapat didownload di internet secara bebas. Podcasting saat ini menjadi alternatifcara belajar mendengarkan yang dapatmemberikanefekpositifterhadappemahamansiswadalammendengar. Menggunakan podcast sebagai media pembelajaran membuka kesempatan barudalam konteks pembelajaran bahasa. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Program Studi Bahasa Inggris DiUniversitas Islam Riau Pekanbaru.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui dampak daripenggunaan podcast terhadap kemampuan mendengar siswa pada matakuliah listening . Sampelpenelitian ini terdiri dari 31 siswa yang diambil secara purposive random sampling dari mahasiswasemester kedua. Instrumen penelitian ini adalah tes pendengaran dengan menggunakan TOEFL IBT.Dalam penelitian ini, tes terdiri dari enamtopik dengan 30 item pertanyaan. Efektivitas podcast dapatdilihat dalam peningkatan pemahaman pendengaran siswa dengan membandingkan nilai rata-rata pretestdan post-test. Setelah menganalisis pengujian, penulis menemukan bahwa skor rata-rata post-testlebih besar dari pre-test (36,38untuk post-test dan 27,80 untuk pre-test) secara signifikan pada tingkat1%. Oleh karena itu, hipotesis null ditolak dan hipotesisal ternatif diterima. Artinya, podcast dapatmemberikan efek positif pada pemahaman pendengaran siswa.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to find out if there is a relationship between shyness and motivation to speak English of the first year students of English study program of FKIP UIR Pekanbaru, (2) to know their shyness and their motivation to speak in speaking English of the first year students of English Study Program of FKIP UIR Pekanbaru, and (3) to know how the relationship between shyness and motivation to speak in speaking English of the first year students of English Study Program of FKIP UIR Pekanbaru. Shyness means a feeling about oneself in a presence of other. Motivation is process of stimulating peple to action t accomplish desired goals. In this research, motivation to speak means to stimulate students to speak English. There are two variables in this research. Shyness is taken as an independent variable and motivation to speak is taken as a dependent variable. The total population of the first year students is about 154. So, the sample of this research is 25 students. The instrument of this research is questionnaire. The aspects of students’ shyness are (1)worry about their think of them, (2) become shy to deal with people from a different social class or to work with more skilled people, and (3) avoid social gathering and usually speak in low voice. The aspect of students’ motivation to speak English are integrative and instrumental motivation. Based on the result of the analysis, there are only 40 % of the students that were indeed shy. It can be concluded that there is significant relationship between students’ shyness and their motivation t speak English.

Abstract

Abstract—Learning a foreign language by using social media at the University level is very important because social media has great potential to support student-centered learning as they are flexible, interactive, and resource–rich in nature. One of its drawbacks is the quality of online instruction that lead to unfavorable perception and perspective of the students. The objectives of this research are to analyze the students’ perceptions and perspectives in using Social Media as a tool in English Language learning. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from the students of the English Study Program, Faculty of Education, the Islamic University of Riau. Research finding revealed that social media is very practical and useful for getting general information, knowledge and to increase their language competency. Abstract

Student skill of Reading or understanding text considered as one of four fundamental language skills which means EFL student have to obtain a good level of reading. Actually, reading skill is not an easy skill to be mastered of, since still much students carried out with reading problem. The aim of this research is to examine reading difficulties that first-year student of English Language Education deal with, and to identify students reading problems and the reasons behind their weaknesses of reading assignment. This research used qualitative research method; it used to obtain data of reading comprehension difficulties faced by first year student of English Language Education FKIP UIR. As research instruments, it used questionnaire which contains of seventeen multiple types of questions which divided into four parts. The result of this research indicated that based on the analysis, first year students do not able on having fluent reading, because students currently deal with various reading difficulties. It can be concluded that Students have to be provided with appropriate teaching strategies depends on learning styles and students’ needs. Thus, the final product of this research is a book of reading for the first year students of English language Education of FKIP-UIR.

Abstract

Audio-visual media can facilitate the interaction between teachers and students during learning activities in the classroom. This study aims to develop of audio-visual-based learning media through Canva Application. This research method is research and development (R&D) which include research and information collection, planning, developing the product, and field testing. The subjects in this research are: material expert, media expert, language expert, learning expert and 36 students in 8th grade. Likert questioner is used in this study. After the product was developed, a feasibility assessment was carried out by experts to see the feasibility of media design, material completeness, language suitability, and feasibility in learning. The results findings were: first the experts’ assessments on the content of audio-visual-based learning media through the Canva Application, it obtained a score of 91.5%. Student responses obtained a score of 90.5%. It can be conclude that the Audio- visual-based learning media is effective because it can increase student learning motivation and can be used in learning.

Abstract

Implementasi kurikulum terbaru menuntut tenaga pendidik agar lebih menguasai teknologi informasi. Berbagai media pembelajaran berbasis teknologi pun bermunculan. Khususnya suatu media yang dapat menarik perhatian siswa, terutama anak usia dini. TK Islam YLPI dan TK Tahfidz YLPI menaruh perhatian besar terhadap pengenalan Bahasa Inggris kepada anak usia dini, Selain itu, TK Islam YLPI bekerjasama dengan TK Tahfidz YLPI memiliki konsep literasi digital yang bertujuan memperkenalkan indahnya budaya membaca ke peserta didik. Melalui adanya konsep literasi digital ini, tenaga pendidik membutuhkan media yang efektif untuk membuat bahan ajar. Dalam hal ini, peserta didik diajak untuk bermain sambil belajar membaca Bahasa Inggris melalui tontonan video animasi Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah memberikan pelatihan pembuatan animasi sederhana kepada guru-guru Pendidikan agar memiliki keahlian yang mumpuni dalam membuat bahan ajar berbasis animasi untuk meningkatkan budaya literasi membaca siswa. Media yang digunakan yaitu aplikasi berbasis web bernama Powtoon.

Abstract

Penelitian ini didasari oleh keingintahuan peneliti tentang bahan ajar yang ada di sekolah dasar apakah sudah mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai budaya melayu kedalam bahan ajar. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah 1) mengetahui bahan ajar tematik yang sudah ada di sekolah dasar kelas IV apakah sudah berbasis nilai-nilai budaya melayu; 2) mengetahui apakah perlu dikembangkan bahan ajar tematik berbasis nilai-nilai budaya melayu di SD kelas IV. Metode penelitian menggunakan model pengembangan model 4-D. Namun pada penelitian hanya dibatasi pada tahap pendefinisian (define) melalui tiga tahap; 1) analisis kebutuhan; 2) analisis kurikulum; dan 3) analisis siswa. Instrumen yang digunakan yaitu obsrvasi dan pedoman wawancara. Analisis data menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian diperoleh gambaran bahwa perlunya dikembangkan sebuah bahan ajar tematik berbasis nilai-nilai budaya melayu untuk siswa kelas IV SD. Karena bahan ajar yang selama ini digunakan belum ada satupun yang berbasis nilai-nilai budaya melayu. Padahal dengan pembelajaran yang saat ini harus berorientasi dengan kerafian lokal seharusnya dalam pembelajaran memasukkan nilai-nilai budaya dalam hal ini adalah bahan ajar yang digunakan dalam pembelajaran. Bahan ajar yang ada saat ini dan digunakan oleh guru terkesan membosankan bagi siswa, ketertarikan siswa untuk membaca bahan ajar terlihat kurang dan kesannya siswa kurang semangat dalam belajar. Hal ini disebabkan karena kurang menariknya bahan ajar yang ada saat ini bagi siswa. Ada beberapa hal yang perlu diperhatikan dalam pengembangan bahan ajar yaitu pemilihan warna, jenis dan ukuran huruf, gambar yang menarik, dan pemilihan materi yang sesuai dengan karakteristik siswa.
