Abstract

YouTube comment sections are often treated as noisy and trivial spaces, yet they function as important arenas where people negotiate knowledge, credibility, and authority. This article examines how testimonial injustice unfolds in YouTube comment sections through everyday interactions surrounding contested knowledge claims. Drawing on social epistemology, particularly the concept of testimonial injustice, this study focuses on how speakers are believed, dismissed, or granted authority in digital discourse. Using qualitative discourse analysis, the data consist of selected comment threads responding to a viral YouTube video related to the Apollo moon landing. The comments were drawn from a dataset of 1,264 comments collected between 15 December 2025 and 1 March 2026, from which 9 comments and reply threads were purposively selected for detailed analysis. As YouTube comment sections continue to grow over time, the dataset reflects the comments available during the specified data collection period. The analysis shows four recurring epistemic patterns: credibility deficit, where testimonies are dismissed without engagement; uptake failure, where attempts to explain or correct information receive partial or no epistemic recognition; identity-based credibility judgments, where speakers are evaluated based on perceived competence rather than the content of their claims; and credibility excess, where confidence and technical tone grant undue epistemic authority. These findings suggest that YouTube comment sections are not merely spaces of misinformation or disagreement, but sites where epistemic norms are actively negotiated and often unevenly distributed. This article contributes to digital discourse studies by highlighting how testimonial injustice operates in everyday online interactions and by positioning YouTube as an epistemically consequential space rather than a marginal one.

Abstract

Integral Human Development cannot be separated from the lives of people as every human being is dynamic and is always developing both internally and externally. The study of integral development makes a major contribution to improving the quality of life for individuals and groups so that everyone can anticipate what needs to be done. The entire research is conducted using a qualitative descriptive research method with a discourse analysis approach and supported by Integral Human Development theories tied to psychology of literature with a thought that personality development is related to the existences of the characters in the novel and is a discussion point in psychology of literature. Integral Human Development (IHD) or Whole Human Development is a concept that emphasizes the development of humans as a whole covering physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects so that humans can achieve a balance between personal growth and social contribution. The novel is chosen as the research object as the novel highlights talks much of the personality progress of the characters in fighting for their rights. Within the internal human development conceptual framework supported by the theory of psychology of literature, there are four steps to improve the quality of life, which become the subject of the research. The results of the analysis show that the novel provides an important lesson that success can be obtained through the implementation of Integral Human Development which in the novel is manifested in the forms of social awareness, hard work, tolerance, and discipline.

Abstract

Politeness is not merely a pragmatic strategy in interpersonal communication but also a discursive practice shaped by power relations, ideology, and social context. This study examines politeness as a discursive practice in the film “Dear John” (2010) using a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The goal of the study is to reveal how politeness strategies are constructed, negotiated, and contested through language in intimate relationships portrayed in the film. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the data consist of selected dialogues between the main characters, John and Savannah, which contain politeness-related expressions. The analysis integrates Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory with Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of CDA: textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice. The findings show that politeness strategies in “Dear John” function not only to maintain interpersonal harmony but also to reflect unequal emotional power, moral positioning, and ideological assumptions about love, sacrifice, and gender roles. Positive politeness dominates the interactions, while negative politeness and off-record strategies emerge in moments of conflict and emotional distance. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of politeness theory and CDA to demonstrate how politeness operates as an ideological and discursive resource within romantic narratives. This study contributes to discourse studies, pragmatics, and literary discourse analysis.
