Abstract

This article discusses the intertwinement of beauty and piety among middle-class Muslim women in urban Indonesia through the use of cosmetics and beauty treatments within the broader trends of ḥalāl lifestyle. It uses an anthropological approach with case studies in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and Serang, the capital city of Banten Province. Jakarta and Serang were chosen because Jakarta is a picture-perfect example of an older area characterized by the abundance of middle-class Muslims and the vehemence of ḥalāl lifestyle, while Serang represents a newer area in this regard. Moreover, this article explores the understanding and practices of religious rituals, as well as the responses of urban middle-class Muslim women towards commodified goods and services, consumerism behavior, and communal piety. We argue that the use of cosmetics and beauty treatments has become one of the most glaring public expressions that has concurrently influenced the way urban middle-class Muslim women perceive themselves, beauty, and piety. In addition, we contend that the understanding and practices of beauty and piety are becoming increasingly complex in urban areas. Finally, we maintain that ḥalāl lifestyle has played an important role in strengthening Islamic identity in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

In the last few years, many people have used cyber religion to identify new forms of religious communities and rituals. It acts as the source of religious engagement that is different, new, creative, and alienated from ‘conventional’ religions. This article aims to reveal how Mubadalah.id as an Instagram account plays a role to provide beautification of da’wa (Islamic preaching conveyed by Islamic scholars) in countering unjust interpretations of Islamic texts toward women. In particular, it is a representation of Islamic media and women’s rights that strengthens the capacity and authority of women ulama. They are carrying on perspectives that affirm the values of reciprocity, equality, cooperation, and justice in marital, familial, and social relations. Mubadalah.id is a social media campaign affiliated to the Fahmina Foundation, a notable Muslim organisation that promotes gender equality in Indonesia. Using a virtual ethnography method, this article aims to understand the strategy used by this account to counter-gender inequality narratives. This article argues that Instagram can be optimized to build a moderate gender construction in countering the mainstreaming patriarchy ideas on social media by supplying alternative interpretations served in beautified contents. In addition, this account shows the representation of women ulama in Indonesian public spaces to negotiate their identity in a Muslim-majority country.

Abstract

The rise of digital media has significantly transformed the landscape of religious authority and feminist activism in Indonesia. This research examines how Mubadalah.id, an Instagram-based digital Islamic platform, serves as a counter-narrative to patriarchal interpretations of Islamic texts by promoting inclusive and reciprocal perspectives rooted in Islamic teachings. The research aims to explore how feminist reinterpretations of religious authority are articulated, mediated, and contested in online spaces, particularly through visual and narrative strategies. Addressing a critical gap in the literature on Islamic digital feminism, this research situates the intersection of religion, gender, and media within the Indonesian context, where women ulama are both emerging and negotiating their presence. Using a qualitative virtual ethnographic approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with the editorial team of Mubadalah.id and content analysis of selected high-engagement Instagram posts. The findings reveal that Mubadalah.id employs visual aesthetics, storytelling, and moderate Islamic jurisprudence to challenge misogynistic narratives, empower women's roles in public discourse, and foster a more gender-equitable understanding of Islam. This research concludes that Islamic digital feminism on Instagram not only challenges dominant narratives but also signifies a broader reconfiguration of Islamic authority and gender dynamics in contemporary Indonesian society.

Abstract

During the last couple of years, Gen Z youths born between 1997 and 2010 have been actively involved in various social communities promoting a particular understanding of Islam, such as volunteers, frontline activists, or organizers. This article explores their socio-religious activism in Solo and their understanding of Islam. It delves into religious and social piety in their da‘wah (proselytization). We found out that the majority of this generation does not understand the meaning of moderate Islam properly. However, their perspectives and attitudes do not oppose differences. Most of them obtain their religious sources from social media and the Internet. Only a few of them, due to their lack of knowledge of Islamic teachings and limited encounters with non-Muslims, have a hateful attitude towards people of other religions. Meanwhile, they have an excessive defense of Islam. This study confirms Pattana Kitiarsa’s idea that religion has been commodified as a spiritual market where Muslims can select products symbolically associated with Islam.

Abstract

This paper by and large explores state-society relations and for the most part discusses the Indonesian government’s plans to ‘modernize’ Madura during the New Order administration and how a number of kyai responded to these plans. Specifically, it is concerned with a conflict between the state and the kyai in the Suramadu Bridge Affair, particularly in the rejection of the industrialization scheme by the Kyai of Bassra. An obvious aspect that can be highlighted from the conflict is the inability of state officials, especially at regional levels, to cope with the high expectations of the central government. Another central aspect underlined is the undemocratic approach of the government towards the implementation of its plans. The government’s plans to ‘modernize’ Madura eventually created resistance among some segments in society, and they made use of, among other things, Islamic symbols in resisting the government’s plans.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v22i2.1919
