Abstract

The COVID-19 is a global disease that has an enormous impact on almost every field, including the educational sector. The shifting of face-to-face learning to blended learning during the COVID-19 pandemic requires technological tools to support the learning process. Hence, this research explores the implementation of Schoology as a learning management system in academic writing class during the COVID-19 crisis. A sequential mixed-method is applied in this research by analyzing data qualitatively and quantitatively. All students in an academic writing class were chosen as participants using the total sampling technique. Furthermore, the research instruments consisted of guided interviews and close-ended questionnaires distributed using google form. The results reveal that Schoology is beneficial to be infused with blended learning. The Schoology platform stimulates students who have sufficient online learning readiness to positively perceive their learning experience using Schoology-based blended learning. However, the institutional intervention must be implemented to provide students training to improve digital competencies, strategies for becoming independent learners, and time management.

Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the students' perception related to the variables of writing self-efficacy, writers' block, and perceived academic writing performance. The researcher collected data from a University located in Papua Province. This research used an online questionnaire by employing simple random sampling. This study enrolled 280 students as respondents. The researchers used SPSS 23 to conduct a descriptive statistical analysis to determine the proportion of respondents based on the frequency of responses. The findings of this study revealed that the respondents of this study have low perceived levels of writing self-efficacy and academic writing performance. Additionally, students believe they face hurdles that contribute to the issue of writers' block. Further action needs to be taken regarding the findings to enhance the variables related to academic writing performance. The empirical findings from this study can be utilized as the foundation for future research to generate policy to solve issues relating to students' academic writing abilities.

Abstract

Considering the crucial skill required in formal education, specifically in higher education, academic writing is a part of every academic writer’s life. However, some writers often feel that they have insufficient knowledge of source use and academic writing. Responding to this issue, this systematic review aims to untangle factors encountered by the writers while having academic writing and the solution to cope with the problems. A literature search supported by Publish or Perish application explored academic articles published in Scopus and Web of Science databases from 2014 to 2022. Employing the PRISMA method, 19 academic articles in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method designs were selected to explore the issue. Exploring the selected articles, this systematic review resulted in the following findings: (1) the factors influencing students’ writing apprehension include unfamiliarity with academic tone and style, beliefs about writing, cognitive and behavioral anxiety, and insufficient support for writing; and (2) to cope with this writing apprehension, students may seek help from others, improve their writing strategies, and effectively manage writing feedback. Furthermore, faculty members should provide more appropriate teaching techniques and opportunities for students to share ideas with their peers to reduce writing anxiety and apprehension. The implications for pedagogical practices and future research directions are further discussed.

Abstract

The COVID-19 crisis has forced the learning system in Indonesia from face-to-face learning to online learning. This rapid transformation presents various challenges, especially for universities in remote areas such as Papua. This study aims to explore the factors that can influence the students' learning experience. The research approach used is quantitative with an analysis model of PLS-SEM. The data were obtained using a simple random sampling technique from four universities in Merauke, with 207 respondents. Four hypotheses were accepted, and one hypothesis was rejected in this research. Online information literacy experience and online learning facility perspective were affecting online learning experience significantly. Meanwhile, the online learning facility perspective significantly affecting online information literacy experience and online learning achievement motivation. However, online learning achievement motivation has a positive correlation but does not contribute significantly to an online learning experience. This research implies that higher education institutions can focus on factors that significantly contribute to the student's learning experience to provide a positive experience and increase online learning effectiveness, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. Keywords: learning experience, online learning, PLS-SEM, COVID-19
