Abstract

The quality of nilam (Pogostemon cablin Benth) oil depend on it patchouli alcohol value. At there time nilam farmers just has produced nilam oil with patchouli alcohol value about 26–28%. To increase this value, fractional vacuum distillation had been done in this study. Nilam oil has been isolated from drying leaf of nilam plant. Patchouli alcohol in this oil was analyzed by gas chromatography, next the oil was distillated by fractional vacuum and the patchouli alcohol was determined from each fraction. This study showed that fractional vacuum distillation of nilam oil gives a higher patchouli alcohol value. The increasing was 23.3387%; from 35.022% at nilam oil before fractination vacuum distillation to 58.3515% at the third fraction from fractional vacuum distillation. In fact, the fourth fraction had the highest patchouli alcohol, but it had dark colour so isn’t fill the standard quality.

Abstract

The research of the usefullness of furfural from bagasse for the production of β-(2-furyl)-acrilyc acid as an alternative raw material of sunscreen compound had been done. The research was done on two stages, the first stage was synthesis of furfural from bagasse and the second was synthesis of β-(2-furyl)-acrilyc acid that is an analog of cynnamic acid in which some derivatives are known possess activities as sunscreen. Cynnamic acid could be produced from benzaldehyde by Perkin methods using alkali hydrolysis. With the similarity of the main structure, so β-(2-furyl)-acrilyc acid can also be synthesized from furfural by Perkin method. The β-(2-furyl)-acrilyc acid had been synthesized in this research from furfural isolated from bagasse by NaOH hydrolysis. Synthesis was done by reflux for 2 hr at 140 - 145 oC and 3 hr at 145 - 150 oC. From the spectroscopic data its known that furfural could be produced from bagasse in 11.65 % yield and 33.83% of β-(2-furyl)-acrilyc acid from the synthesis on the second process. The UV -Vis spectrophotometer analysis result of β-(2-furyl)-acrilyc acids showed λmax at 296.20 nm. It showed that until this step the sunscreen compound can be resulted from furfural isolated from bagasse, especially as a sunscreen that protected skin from eritema (λmax at 290 - 320 nm) that is called as sunscreen UV-B.

Abstract

Technological developments must be followed by all lines of education even with limited facilities and infrastructure. Educators need to prepare themselves with technological advances such as in internet-assisted learning so that learning can be interesting and contextual. The occurrence of events that cause face-to-face learning in conventional classes cannot be implemented must be handled wisely and appropriately. This requires appropriate skills, including laboratory activities. If laboratory activities, especially in chemistry subjects, are not carried out at all, they will not achieve the competence of higher order thinking skills (including critical and creative thinking skills) and laboratory activity skills. However, not all chemistry teachers in Sampang Regency, East Java have experience developing experimental worksheets, even though they have experience in developing worksheets that contain a collection of questions. For this reason, training is needed for teachers who will prepare simple experimental worksheets that support distance learning or blended learning. LKPD that helps higher order thinking skills is important to help teachers guide students not only to fulfill laboratory skills but also to prepare students with higher order thinking skills. This is also a demand for the curriculum in Indonesia (K13). The use of tools and materials that are easily found around students in simple chemistry experiments will help students achieve basic competencies. The training will be held online from July to August 2021. The training participants as many as 12 chemistry teachers participated in the training with the final result being the development of a simple experimental chemistry worksheet. All participants responded positively to this training activity and wanted the training activities to be carried out for other topics.
