Abstract

This research was conducted to find out whether Digital Storytelling - based Dayaknese folklore boost student participation in speaking ability. The method used was classroom action research. The population of this research was 22 students of the English education study program in the third semester. There are some aspects of speaking which focused on in this research, those aspects are pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and grammatical accuracy.Based on the observation sheet, the overall activity ran well. Both of students and the lecturer played their roles well. The students were coming to be active in the classroom, discussing digital storytelling and the mechanism of publishing the video. The average score on the student test was 83,61, categorized as very good, it can be said digital storytelling is effective and can bust student motivation

Abstract

The background of this research is students’ errors in writing descriptive texts. The students do not understand the correct structure of writing descriptive text. The objective of this research is to find out the types of errors and to identify the dominant types of errors that found in students’ writing products. The subject of this research is the students’ writing descriptive text products written by eighth grade students of SMP Joseph Khatulistiwa Sungai Tebelian. This research used qualitative method, by classifying the errors using Surface Strategy Taxonomy. It consisted of four types of errors in the students’ writing descriptive text product. These were omission, addition, misformation and misordering. Qualitative data was collected from documentation of students’ writing descriptive text products. Qualitative data were analyzed through collection of a sample of learner language, identification of errors, description of errors and explanation of errors. The data analysis in this research was taken from 10 students of SMP Joseph Khatulistiwa Sungai Tebelian. The researcher analyzed 10 worksheets of students writing products. The researcher found the total of students’ errors were 46 errors of students errors. The finding showed there were four types of errors such as 26 errors of omission on percentage 57%, 12 errors of misformation on percentage 26%, 6 errors of addition on percentage 13%, and 2 errors of misordering on percentage 4%. The dominant type of error was omission with 27 errors.

Abstract

Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu mata pelajaran wajib yang ditempuh oleh siswa di Sekolah Menengah Pertama, Sekolah Menengah Atas, Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan dan sederajat. Sebagai salah satu mata pelajaran wajib, maka siswa diharapkan dapat menguasai materi pelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang disampaikan di sekolah. Selain itu, sejak ditetapkan sebagai salah satu pelajaran wajib bagi pelajar di Indonesia. Saat ini Bahasa Inggris berada pada urutan pertama diantara beberapa bahasa lainnya yang paling banyak digunakan di dunia. Bahasa Inggris dituturkan oleh sekitar 1,13 Milyar penduduk dunia dan ada sekitar 60 negara yang menggunakan Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Nasional atau Bahasa Resmi. Berkaitan dengan hal tersebut, pemerintah telah menetapkan Bahasa Inggris sebagai mata pelajaran wajib di sekolah formal di Indonesia. Sehingga perlu dilakukan berbagai hal untuk menunjang pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di sekolah-sekolah bahkan di luar lingkungan pendidikan formal. Hal ini untuk membantu peserta didik memiliki motivasi dan minat dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris. Salah satu yang dapat dilakukan adalah menggunakan Index Card Game. Berdasarkan hasil studi pustaka dan observasi yang dilakukan oleh tim pengabdi. Selanjutnya tim pengabdi akan melaksanakan peningkatan penguasaan Bahasa Inggris bagi siswa yang tinggal di Asrama St. Yohanes Gabriel Perboyre yang berlokasi di Kilometer 4 Nanga Pinoh, Kabupaten Melawi.
