Abstract

Studies on pragmatics which are focusing on the discussion of speech act have been highlighting the issue of how speech act strategies are analyzed based on the forms, classifications, and functions. As the use of speech act strategies is usually correlated to the politeness strategy, the analyses needs to be taken further to the internal modification, for example is the use of upgraders and downgraders to see how words build the politeness in a context differently based on the degree of politeness they carry as stated on Trosborg (1995). This paper used SATGAS COVID-19 Talkshow as the research object for the talkshow uses a lot of upgraders and downgraders strategies. Moreover, the talkshow is unique in its topic which is related to health in which such talkshows haven’t been quite addressed in speech act studies. As for that, this paper discussed types and functions of upgraders and downgraders used in the talkshow as well as what speech act classifications in which the upgraders and downgraders are embedded. This paper was analyzed using the contextual method which the results show the dominant speech acts contain upgraders and downgraders are assertive and directive; the dominant types of upgraders and downgraders are adverbial intensifiers and modals. Moreover, the results have shown that the two main purposes of the use of the strategy are to emphazise the importance of some informations and to follow the politeness culture which some of them are driven by the factor of of the speaker’s religion. The most important part of this research is that there are downgraders’ markers which are specially bound to Indonesian context, ‘Insya Alloh’ and the use of pronouns and upgraders’ marker ‘buanyak’. Nevertheless, this study only focusing on the talk show which only focusing on the health domain, moreover; the studies related to upgraders and downgraders in Indonesian context have not been quite addressed, next researchers could have more broaden scope of the study related to upgraders and downgraders, for example related to gender studies.

Abstract

This research discusses the strategies of speech act of requests used in selected episodes of the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants based on Anna Trosborg’s concept in pragmatic studies. The aim of this research is to identify and analyze eight strategies grouped into 4 categories of speech act of requests used in the conversations of characters in the series. The episodes “Culture Shock,” “Help Wanted,” and “Band Geeks” from the SpongeBob SquarePants series were selected for their diverse situations, rich dialogues, and specifically because they depict a wide range of social interactions and character dynamics, which are critical for examining the nuances of request speech acts. The research gap in this study lies in the fact that previous studies have not explored the characters’ roles within the story and their positions involved in the dialogues under scrutiny, which is a crucial aspect of understanding the nuances of speech acts in different contexts. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with Miles and Huberman data analysis techniques to examine the speech act strategies of requests. Data were collected through film observation and translated into oral and written language. The research results indicate that in selected episodes of the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, there are four categories of speech act of request strategies that can be found according to Anna Trosborg’s concept. This research contributes to understanding the application of speech act strategies in the context of animated films, as well as its relevance to pragmatic theory. Future research could build upon this study by examining the role of speech acts in various media platforms, focusing on those that cater to diverse age groups or cultural contexts. Researchers could also delve into how the use of speech acts in animated media shapes children’s and young adults’ perceptions and interactions with the world. Moreover, a comparative analysis of speech acts in animated films versus live-action films could offer valuable insights into the distinct communication strategies employed across different media formats.

Abstract

Indonesian has many vocabularies which have developed more or less according to the user community and their needs. With the existence of an Indonesian dictionary that contains vocabulary and meanings that serve as guidelines, standardization of vocabulary in the KBBI and requires scientific negotiation. Through semantic science which is the basis for its compilation and standardization, with the present dictionary presentation, vocabulary and meaning will be easier to understand. The type of research used in this study is a qualitative research using descriptive analysis. This qualitative method is used by researchers to analyze the data findings. The data’s source in this study is from KBBI V (online). The dictionary will be analyzed for its elements of abbreviations and acronyms. Analysis this study was carried out descriptively which later was expected to be able to find the characteristics, properties, and functions through the selection of the required data. The results of this study found that there are several abbreviations and acronyms found in the KBBI (online). Abbreviations and acronyms found are seen from the process of formation, form, and function. Another existence found by researchers is the use of abbreviations and acronyms as research that can enrich and vocabulary development.

Abstract

This study examines the forms of adherence to Leech's (2014) politeness maxims as realized through illocutionary speech acts in the Minangkabau regional film Onde Mande!. The study is motivated by the limited application of Leech's (2014) revised framework in existing literature, particularly in the context of regional Indonesian cinema. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach with a single case study design, this study draws on a pragmatic framework that integrates illocutionary speech act theory with Leech's (2014) politeness principles. Data were collected through non-participatory observation of the film's dialogue using note-taking and repeated playback techniques, and analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman (1994). The analysis identified 84 instances of politeness maxim adherence throughout the film's dialogue. From these data, 10 representative instances were selected for in-depth analysis. The findings reveal that seven of Leech's ten politeness maxims are present in the film's dialogue, namely the Generosity Maxim (M1), Tact Maxim (M2), Approbation Maxim (M3), Obligation of S to O Maxim (M5), Obligation of O to S Maxim (M6), Agreement Maxim (M7), and Sympathy Maxim (M9). These maxims are realized through four types of illocutionary speech acts, including expressive, directive, commissive, and assertive acts. The Tact Maxim and Obligation Maxims emerged as particularly prominent, reflecting the deeply rooted cultural values of respect, reciprocity, and communal harmony that characterize Minangkabau society. The study concludes that politeness adherence in the film is not limited to a single speech act type or social context, but manifests across varying interactional situations, ranging from family interactions to host-guest exchanges and community deliberations. The application of Leech's (2014) framework, as opposed to the earlier 1983 version, proves particularly valuable in capturing the full range of politeness forms present in the dialogue, especially through the differentiation of the Obligation maxims into M5 and M6. This study contributes to the growing body of research on linguistic politeness in regional Indonesian film and offers a replicable analytical model for future studies in this area.
