Abstract

The transformation of the latest Indonesian curriculum led to inevitable schemes, including the establishment of an activator teachers’ program. It is expected that teachers of better quality are produced in support of the aims of students' learning abilities, including critical thinking. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, this study is conducted to find the profiles and practices of EFL activator teachers. It involves 37 EFL activator teachers in East Java. While questionnaires are used to find the profiles of activator teachers, semi-structured interviews and observations are conducted to reveal how best EFL activator teachers implement critical thinking in the classroom. The findings show that activator teachers in general have a strong positive perception toward critical thinking in everyday classrooms; they also have medium practices of critical thinking teaching. Further investigation reveals that activator teachers do share a great amount of awareness in critical thinking. There are 4 strategies used by the teachers in prompting critical thinking; they are questioning, project/problem-based, group work, and the use of students’ feedback or reflection. The study implies the need for strengthened professional development to bridge the gap between teachers’ awareness and actual classroom practices in promoting critical thinking.

Abstract

This study presents the design and evaluation of a fully local, hybrid ensemble Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system tailored for Indonesian legal consultation. By integrating sparse (BM25), dense (FAISS), and keyword-aware retrieval mechanisms, the system balances lexical, semantic, and domain-specific relevance to retrieve high-quality legal context. A curated dataset of 8,450 legal consultation articles was scraped from a trusted legal platform, cleaned through multi-stage pre-processing, and indexed for efficient retrieval. Retrieved documents are formatted into structured prompts and fed into locally hosted large language models (LLMs) using Ollama, allowing for complete offline operation. Experiments comparing five retrieval configurations TF-IDF, BM25, FAISS, ensemble BM25+FAISS, and ensemble with keyword boosting demonstrate that the hybrid ensemble with keyword boosting yields the most relevant and grounded answers. Both quantitative (retrieval score analysis) and qualitative (manual relevance rating) evaluations were performed, confirming the effectiveness of the ensemble strategy in improving answer quality. Additionally, the system achieves practical response times (12–20 seconds) on consumer-grade hardware without reliance on cloud services. This work makes a novel contribution by demonstrating that a hybrid ensemble retrieval framework, specifically tuned to the linguistic characteristics and retrieval challenges of Indonesian legal texts, can significantly enhance the performance of local RAG-based legal QA systems. Future directions include real-time indexing, fine-tuning of legal-domain LLMs, and extending the system to support other legal domains such as statutory law, regulations, and court rulings.

Abstract

This study aims at profiling the students’ English proficiency in the Department of English, Universitas Negeri Malang (UM). The English proficiency of 277 students across admission Classes in 2016, 2015, 2014, and 2013 who are involved in the study is measured by using a proficiency test. The subtests reliability was assured and the data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The results show no respondent reached the advanced level; the majority was in the low intermediate level. It indicates that the respondents’ score was not linear with their year of admission classes. However, a linearly increasing average score was respectively observed from the scores of Classes of 2015, 2014, and 2013. Statistical differences in the mean scores of the students across admission classes were observed. Next, no evidence of statistical differences was observed in the mean score of the students across different study programs in their seventh semester. Finally, none of Class of 2013 exactly met the graduate profile. However, those beyond the profile and those below the profile were marginally comparable. These findings were further discussed.

Abstract

This research focuses on exploring the constraints and challenges faced by teachers and students when implementing text-based teaching in specific contexts. Text-based teaching has been proven to have a significant impact on the principles of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning, improving students' ability to understand the meaning and fostering communication competence in authentic environments. However, despite its benefits, various obstacles and challenges hinder the successful implementation of this approach. These constraints include a lack of vocabulary and grammar acquisition, inadequate English language skills in context, low motivation, limited learning autonomy, and lack of cooperation among students. In addition, teachers also face challenges such as selecting appropriate authentic texts, modifying and adapting them to meet instructional objectives, designing appropriate tasks, and overcoming potential student boredom with routine activities. To overcome these barriers, teachers need to engage in comprehensive professional development to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for effective implementation of text-based teaching. In addition, policymakers are encouraged to provide advanced training opportunities in this area, allowing teachers to improve their teaching practices.

Abstract

This research is a qualitative case study exploring the use of flashcards to support English speaking practice in an Islamic boarding school with limited access to technology. Ten senior students from the IEC (Istiqlal English Club) participated in the study. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed thematically. The results revealed three main themes: (1) flashcards help students build sentence structures and improve grammar usage, (2) flashcards increase fluency, confidence, and willingness to speak, and (3) flashcards create a fun, interactive, and stress-free learning environment. While providing valuable insights, this study is limited by its small sample size and the context of a single study site. This research suggests that teachers in environments with limited technology can adopt simple learning routines using flashcards to encourage active speaking practice while providing structure and motivation for students.
