Abstract

This study mainly focuses on investigating the devoicing phenomenon happening in Indonesian language. There are nine words selected as the sample of the study: [akad], [jilid], [wujud], [kutub], [sebab], [tertib], [caleg], [dialog], and [warteg]. All these words involve voiced stop consonants including bilabial /b/, alveolar /d/, and velar /g/ at coda position (final word). Ten participants from different age and gender were selected as participants, they subsequently produced the words and the data of their vocalizations were transcribed and analyzed using Praat software. Praat was used to bring the data of pitch (frequency), duration, and intensity. The result of the data suggests that the participant experienced the phonological process called devoicing while pronouncing the words. The words which in the first place involve voiced stop consonants, turn into voiceless stop consonants /p/, /t/, /k/ respectively. To give phonological explanation of devoicing, generative phonology and optimality theory were used. Generative phonology was used to show the changing process from level of representation to the surface level of representation as well as to formulate the phonological rule for the devoicing process. Meanwhile, optimality theory was used to describe the input and output for each word. Keywords: devoicing; generative phonology; optimality theory; stop consonants

Abstract

Balanced representation of gender characters in English textbooks, especially in Senior High School, has become a hot topic nowadays, because textbooks not only teach about science but also instill socio-cultural ideologies, norms, and values into students. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the ratio of how men and women are represented in various contexts in textbooks for grade 12 of Senior High School. This study uses qualitative descriptive for critical analysis of images as a method to see the appearance of men and women in English textbooks using Critical Analysis with Visual Grammar Theory. The findings indicate that 1) in the frequency of appearance of men and women, it shows that, overall, female characters are more common than male characters, female characters are more than male with a proportion of 57.3% (70) compared to 42.7% (52 images). 2) In the socio-cultural context, the frequency of appearance of men and women is somewhat different, the frequency of appearance of female characters is more than men in the context of education, family and leisure, male characters are more than women only in the context of work. 3) Gender stereotypes are still found in this textbook, although there are more female characters than men, women are still associated with their gender stereotypes. Therefore, the textbook entitled English describes female characters more than women in terms of the ratio of their appearance and also in the ratio of the four socio-cultural contexts, but female stereotypes still appear in this textbook.

Abstract

As language continuously evolves with societal and technological changes, the two generations, Gen Z and Gen Alpha, shaped by different digital environments, showcase distinct linguistic trends. Gen Z, having grown up in the early days of the internet, tends to use text-based slang influenced by memes and early social media. In contrast, Gen Alpha, immersed in the world of TikTok and YouTube, embraces more visual and fast-paced slang. By applying Halliday’s register theory, this research highlights how these slang variations are shaped by the social contexts, relationships, and communication methods of each generation. This study explores the unique slang words used by Generation Z (Gen Z) and Generation Alpha (Gen Alpha) on social media platforms and also provides a sociolinguistic perspective on how technology drives the development of language, offering insights into how these generations express identity and navigate their social worlds through slang.

Abstract

This study investigates the phonostylistic features of John Lennon’s 1975 rendition of Stand by Me, focusing on how vocal elements such as consonants, vowels, pitch, rhythm, and stress patterns contribute to the emotional depth and thematic complexity of the song. The pokok masalah of this research is understanding how phonetic choices shape the song’s expression of solidarity, vulnerability, and resilience, and how these themes are reinforced through vocal dynamics. The tujuan of this study is to examine how phonostylistic features enhance the song’s message of unwavering support and emotional connection. The metode used is a qualitative phonostylistic analysis, which involves analyzing the consonantal and vowel patterns in the lyrics, identifying key phonetic elements, and examining their relationship with the song's emotional and thematic impact. The data is derived from transcriptions of the song’s lyrics, focusing on prominent consonants and vowels, as well as shifts in pitch, rhythm, and vocal stress. The analysis reveals that the repetition of key words such as “stand,” “night,” and “I” amplifies the song’s central message of support and connection. The study concludes that Lennon’s vocal delivery not only intensifies the song’s emotional resonance but also transforms Stand by Me into a timeless symbol of collective strength and solidarity, continuing to resonate across generations.

Abstract

Social media has transformed communication patterns, with TikTok emerging as a platform where interactions are highly expressive and multimodal. This study examines the role of emojis as politeness strategies in the comments section of TikTok influencers, focusing on how these visual symbols help maintain harmonious digital communication. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the researchers analyzed 20 emoji-containing comments from a high-engagement influencer video. The data were interpreted through Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory, supplemented by the concept of multimodality. The findings indicate that emojis significantly support both positive and negative politeness strategies. Positive politeness was dominant (around 70%), often realized through empathy, humor, and solidarity-building emojis, while negative politeness was achieved through hedging, apologies, and respectful cues. Emojis also frequently softened bald-on-record statements and enabled off-record indirectness. The study concludes that emojis are crucial in enhancing politeness, enriching emotional expression, and fostering a sense of community in TikTok interactions, highlighting their importance in the evolving landscape of digital sociolinguistics.

Abstract

This article examines the activation of a schema based on the game, the realization of the Schema Theory in the game character named Eunie, and the proof of Eunie’s status as the primary character in the game. The study analyzes the factors that trigger the activation of a schema and how it relates to the game’s structure. It explores how the Schema Theory manifests in the game character Eunie, highlighting her role as the central character. The research provides evidence to support the claim that Eunie is, in fact, the main character in the game. The study at hand utilizes the Schema Theory components introduced by J. Piaget to investigate the research on Cognitive Stylistics. In order to characterize the themes that are realized in the game Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the research is carried out utilizing a qualitative descriptive design with case study. The research focuses on a schema that influences how people see their surroundings and the world around them. It suggests that in order for a player to completely understand an idea or a tale from the game, that player’s prior knowledge is necessary. There are seven components in the schema theory that must be outlined: Figure and Ground, Prototypicality, Resonance and Ambience, Metaphor and Framing, Simulation and Projection, Mind-Modeling, and Text-Worlds. The result emphasized the importance of schemas in aiding readers to interpret the game’s world and characters’ accents. This study highlights the significance of Schema Theory in Cognitive Stylistics as a valuable framework for comprehending character development and literary analysis in video games.

Abstract

This study describes the morpho-stylistic and the semantic-stylistic features used in the top four songs of Arctic Monkeys’ AM album, namely, “I Wanna Be Yours,” “Do I Wanna Know?”, “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” and “No. 1 Party Anthem.” This research conducted using a qualitative descriptive method derived from the linguistic deviation theory by Leech analyses of the lyrical texts for their morphological and semantic deviations like informal contractions, neologism, objectification, metaphors and irony. Taking language out of the box, the findings show that Arctic Monkeys have consistently broken linguistic norms in order to produce emotionality, stylistic nuance and lyrical uniqueness. These deviations greatly enhance the band’s lyrical identity of poetic and aesthetic qualities.

Abstract

This study presents a feminist analysis of the film Gone Girl (2014) through the theoretical lens of the male gaze concept proposed by Laura Mulvey. The study explores how the film deconstructs traditional patriarchal cinematic structures by repositioning the female protagonist, Amy Dunne, from an object of visual pleasure to an active subject who controls the narrative and psychological manipulation. Using qualitative content analysis methods, the study identifies key scenes and visual strategies that challenge the conventions of female representation in mainstream Hollywood cinema. The findings suggest that Gone Girl does not simply symbolically reverse gender roles, but also critically questions the mechanisms of spectatorism, representation, and power embedded in cinematic language. This study contributes to the broader discourse on gender and visual culture, by showing how contemporary cinema can be a space of resistance to normative feminine representations and patriarchal ideologies embedded in film production.
