Abstract

The research aims to measure the implementation of topdown technique on improving students ability at listening comprehension of grade XIak1 at SMKN 1 Panyabungan.The method of this research was Classroom Action Research. The participant in this classroom action research was 25 students of grade XIak1 at SMKN 1 Panyabungan. The instruments consisted of topdown technique, listening comprehension test, observation sheet, and interview, the data of this research was analyzed two method of data analysis. Quantitative data analyzed was used to examining and interpreting data from topdown technique and listening comprehension. The data taken from observation and interview was used qualitative data analysis. The research consisted of two cycles, before first cycles started, the researcher conducted pre test to know students listening comprehension real ability. First Cycle conducted after treatment given, due to the result of first cycle doesn`t improve in all aspect. Researcher continued to second cycles at the end of cycle. Three result test to be compared to know students improvement in listening comprehension. The result shows that the topdown technique better improves the students ability at listening comprehension. Students score were obtained from total score of correct answer which is converted to Toeic conversion scale. The findings on this study proved that teaching listening applying topdown technique improved students` listening comprehension. Significance improvement particularly in students ability to answer listening part one; matching pictures with statement. Based on the result of the study topdown technique to be recommended for the teacher in Vocational High School ( SMK ) to improve students` listening comprehension.

Abstract

Aturan terbaru dalam publikasi di jurnal terakreditasi dan jurnal internasional mengharuskan penulisan citasi dalam artikel dengan memamfaatkan citation & reference manager seperti Mendeley. Mahasiswa dalam pengamatan yang kami lakukan masih menulis citasi dan daftar pustaka dalam karya ilmiah dengan cara manual, kemudian belum mempunyai wawasan memamfaatkan Mendeley. Dampak dari pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini ialah untuk mengangkat bobot karya ilmiah mahasiswa dengan pendekatan kemampuan citasi. Pendekatan yang diterapkan ialah ceramah, praktek, dan tanya jawab. Adapun mitra pada program ini ialah mahasiswa Prodi Bahasa Inggris Semester V IAIN Takengon sebanyak 13 orang. Dampak kegiatan memperlihatkan adanya pemahaman baru dan peningkatan kemampuan peserta dalam mengoperasikan dan membuat kutipan dengan Mendeley, sehingga mahasiswa merasa mudah menulis dan terbangun drajat karya ilmiah.

Abstract

This study investigated increasing students' ability to write procedure text through learning model pictures and pictures in ninth grade at SMPN 4 Takengon. The study used the quantitative method with experimental design. To collect the data, the writer uses the test (pre-test and post-test). The population in this research is all students of the ninth grade in SMPN 4 Takengon, which consists of 196 students. The writer uses purposive sampling to take the sample in this research. A first group is an experimental group, which amounts to 37 students, and the second group is the control group which amounts to 37 students.  The writer uses the t-test formula to analyze data in this research. The result of tscore is 5,71. Compared with the ttable, the tscore is higher, i.e., 5,71, than ttable is 1,99. It can be concluded that learning model pictures and pictures can increase students' ability in writing procedure text. The writer suggests that students try to write in English as habitual because it can help add more vocabulary and make the students have good writing.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu mata pelajaran yang dianggap sulit dan kurang disukai dikalangan siswa. Apalagi setelah diberlakukannya kurikulum 2013 dimana posisi mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris khususnya untuk tingkat Sekolah Dasar bukanlah menjadi mata pelajaran inti melainkan menjadi mata pelejaran pilihan. Sehingga resminya para siswa mempelajari Bahasa Inggris di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP. Hal inilah yang menjadi latar belakang dalam kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang dilakukan oleh tim Dosen TBI Stain Mandailing Natal. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk menumbuhkan minat dan daya tarik peserta dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris, diharapkan dengan menggunakan konsep Auditory Intellectually Repetition (AIR), siswa dapat meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris dengan baik dan benar. Pengabdian ini menggunakan metode pengabdian berbasis service learning (SL) dengan konsep Auditory Intellectually Repetition (AIR). Model pembelajaran AIR ini merupakan singkatan dari auditory, intellectually, repetition. Auditory, yaitu belajar mengutamakan berbicara, mengingat dan mendengarkan. Pengumpulan data yang dipakai dalam kegiatan ini adalah: (1) soal tes unjuk kerja untuk mengukur jumlah penguasaan kosakata peserta. Tes dikerjakan peserta secara individual yang diberikan di akhir materi pembelajaran. dan (2) catatan lapangan, dilakukan dengan mendokumentasikan proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dan foto kegiatan selama proses belajar mengajar baik sebelum maupun ketika dilaksanakan tindakan. Berdasarkan kegiatan pendampingan yang telah dilaksanakan, dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa terdapat perubahan sikap peserta dari yang kurang aktif, tidak antusias dan kurang terlibat menjadi lebih aktif, antusias dan mau berinteraksi secara kolaborasi selama kegiatan pendampingan berlangsung sehingga terdapat peningkatan ketrampilan siswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris

Abstract

The Problem in this research students who have learnt English for six or more years are not as succesfull as the government expects especially in communication. This study intended to understand the impact of Debate in English on improving communication skills, especially oral communication. The type of this research was an experimental study with a pre-experimental design using one-group pre-test-post-test. The population in this research was 60 people divided in to two groups they were experimental and control groups and consisted of 30 people. The data were collected by using observation technique and documentation technique Many studies have reported how practical debate-based English learning activities are in improving overall English. The author found few results of studies that tried to understand the impact of debate-based English training and learning methods on improving and strengthening verbal communication skills. For this reason, we experimented with one of the study groups to prove the extent of the impact of debate-based learning in English and the improvement of communication skills. Our simple step is to experiment by designing the study into two groups; the first is the treatment group, and the other is the control group. We carried out this experiment with two classes of English students at the South Tapanuli educational institute. We have done a series of pretests in both groups.After seven face-to-face meetings for the next treatment class, at the eighth meeting, we gave a final test, also called a posttest, for both groups of students. We have carried out a series of data analyses, and surprisingly the treatment group has a very significant impact compared to the control group. In other words, there has been a change in improving oral communication skills in treating students. The hypothesis testing was done to demonstrate the outcome of the analysis. The null hypothesis was rejected in this example because t0 (3.14) was more significant than the value of the t-table from the table at the significance level of 0.05. (2.000). Consequently, the idea that English discussion significantly influences improving communication skills was developed. This was proven in this study. Hopefully, these findings will contribute new ideas to improving English learning with the discharge activity approach.

Abstract

Using a quantitative methodology, this study examined the effects of academic achievement, student motivation, and engagement on the use of technology in English language instruction at a high school in North Sumatra, Indonesia. A sample of 200 students was examined using Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) in order to investigate the relationship between academic achievement, student engagement, motivation, and technology integration. The findings showed a strong correlation between academic performance, motivation, and engagement with technological integration. A mediation analysis revealed how important student motivation and engagement are in bridging the gap between technology and academic achievement. The results of the bootstrapping study were more reliable, and the proposed model's explanatory strength and predictive significance were highlighted by the R2 and Q2 values. There includes a discussion of the implications for English instruction, along with some helpful suggestions and directions for further investigation.
