Abstract

Classroom management skills of prospective English as a second language (EFL) teachers are inseparable. Professionalism requires a balance between theoretical education in the classroom and real-world experience. This article aims to analyze the perceptions of pre-service EFL teachers during the Kampus Mengajar program. Three alumni of the 7th batch of pre-service EFL teachers who teach in Junior High Schools were purposively selected as the subjects of this study. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. To collect data, semi-structured interviews were used. The data analysis of this study used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The results of the study showed that pre-service EFL teachers had positive perceptions during the Kampus Mengajar program. However, there were also many challenges faced by the participants during Kampus Mengajar, namely (1) Difficulty in instructional materials, (2) student motivation, (3) technology integration, and (4) busy teacher schedules. In addition, there were also several strategies used by the participants to overcome these obstacles, such as maximizing preparation before teaching, using appropriate teaching strategies and technology integration, and having good teaching aids. Despite all that, the Kampus Mengajar program is recommended to be implemented as one way to improve faculty accreditation scores, an evaluation tool for the Independent Curriculum and an authentic experience for pre-service EFL teachers in the reality of school life.

Abstract

The study aims to examine how well students' English-speaking abilities are affected by digital and visual media. Via a quasi-experimental research design, two groups of primary school pupils were observed: the experimental group received instruction via digital visual media, while the control group received instruction as usual. Pre-test and post-test data were analyzed to determine how much fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and understanding had improved. A statistical analysis using an Independent t-test showed that although the experimental group's mean improvement was 17 points higher than the control group's 9.4 points, the difference was not statistically significant (Sig. = 0.147, p > 0.05). Therefore, it can be suggested that digital visual media creates an urge to learn and enhances the learning outcome; however, it does not significantly impact improving English-speaking skills as per the study's limitations. More extended use of digital media with a larger sample size can be suggested for further studies.

Abstract

The role of English in higher education is increasingly critical, particularly in non-English-speaking countries like Indonesia, where students often enter universities with varying levels of English proficiency. Addressing this challenge, the Extended English Language Program (EELP) at Universitas Islam Kadiri Kediri aims to support students in developing foundational English skills essential for academic and professional success. This study examines students' perceptions of the teaching methods, learning materials, and support services provided by EELP, as well as their overall satisfaction with the program. Using a quantitative descriptive design, data were collected through a structured questionnaire with Likert-scale items, and responses from 30 first-semester students were analyzed using descriptive statistics to identify trends in perceptions and satisfaction. The results indicate that most students positively perceived EELP, highlighting interactive teaching methods, effective instructional delivery, and opportunities for practice and engagement as key strengths. Improved English grammar understanding and increased confidence in speaking were among the reported outcomes. However, 13% of students expressed mild dissatisfaction with certain teaching methods, suggesting areas for refinement to better accommodate diverse learning preferences. Overall, the findings underscore the program's success in enhancing students’ foundational English skills while identifying opportunities for improvement. These insights contribute to the theoretical and practical understanding of language education, emphasizing the importance of tailored and interactive approaches to bridging proficiency gaps in higher education.

Abstract

This study examines the comparative effectiveness of the KWL (Know-Want-Learned) and SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) methods in enhancing reading comprehension among 7th-grade students at SMPN 2 Ngadiluwih. The research was motivated by the lack of consensus on the superiority of both methods and the need to account for classroom dynamics and student motivation, factors often overlooked in prior studies. Participants included 68 students, divided into two groups: an experimental group (KWL) and a control group (SQ3R), with reading comprehension scores as the dependent variable, measured via a 20-item multiple-choice test. The objective was to compare the impact of both methods while identifying external factors such as student engagement and teacher competency. A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test revealed significant improvements in reading comprehension for both methods. However, no statistical difference was found (p-value = 0.914). Data analysis using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, homogeneity test, and independent t-test in SPSS 27 confirmed that implementation success was influenced by the classroom environment, such as the presence of peer tutors in the SQ3R group, which fostered a conducive learning atmosphere. The study concludes that the KWL method is suitable for simpler texts with high student motivation. In contrast, the SQ3R method is more effective for in-depth analysis with structured guidance. Practical implications include recommendations for teachers to combine both methods based on student needs, the necessity of research-based reading strategy training, and future exploration of technology integration in pedagogical approaches.

Abstract

This study explores EFL students' perceptions of using Quizizz as an assessment tool in Basic Reading class and examines its correlation with their reading proficiency. A survey was conducted among 25 students using a closed-ended questionnaire, and their reading proficiency was assessed using final test scores. The findings reveal that students generally have a positive perception of Quizizz, particularly in terms of its interactive features, motivation enhancement, and immediate feedback. Correlation analysis indicates a significant relationship between students' perceptions and their reading proficiency, suggesting that higher engagement with Quizizz is associated with better reading outcomes. However, some technical difficulties and accessibility challenges were noted, emphasizing the need for additional training and support. The study concludes that integrating Quizizz in reading instruction enhances student engagement and proficiency, though further research is needed to explore long-term effects and broader implementation strategies.
