Abstract

Salah satu tema utama sekaligus prinsip pokok dalam ajaran Islam adalah persamaan antara manusia, baik antara laki-laki dan wanita maupun antar bangsa, suku dan keturunan. Banyak ayat al-Qur’ân telah menunjukkan bahwa laki-laki dan perempuan adalah semartabat sebagai manusia, terutama secara spiritual  (Q.S. 9:112, 66:5). Namun demikian, meskipun al-Qur’ân adalah kitab suci yang kebenarannya abadi, penafsirannya tidak bisa dihindari sebagai suatu yang relatif. Perkembangan historis berbagai mazhab kalam, fiqh dan tasawuf merupakan bukti positif tentang kerelatifan penghayatan keagamaan umat Islam. Pada suatu kurun, kadar intelektualitas menjadi dominan. Pada kurun lainnya, kadar emosionalitas menjadi menonjol. Itulah sebabnya persepsi tentang wanita di kalangan umat Islam khususnya mufassir juga berubah-ubah dari zaman ke zaman. Terlepas dari pemikiran para mufasir atau tokoh-tokoh agama dalam melihat persoalan ini, di sini kita melihat kenyataan yang pernah terjadi di Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam belasan abad yang silam (1641-1699). Ada beberapa perempuan tampil sebagai pemegang tampuk pemerintahan yang dikenal sebagai Sultanah (ratu).  Ratu-ratu tersebut memerintah sebuah kerajaan yang besar menurut masanya yang merupakan sebuah kebenaran sejarah.

Abstract

Disappointment is one of the most prevalent negative emotions experienced by adolescents and can disrupt psychological well-being if not properly managed. This study aims to develop an integrative Islamic model of emotion regulation based on the Qur’anic concepts of tafakkur (cognitive reappraisal) and tadzakkur (spiritual meaning-making). Employing a qualitative approach, this research employed a literature study method and a thematic analysis of Qur’anic verses containing the expressions "la’allakum tatafakkarun" and "la’allakum tadzakkarun."  Data were examined through classical-to-modern interpretations and connected with contemporary psychological theories, including Gross’s emotion regulation framework, Pargament’s religious coping, and Park’s meaning-making model. The findings demonstrated that tafakkur functions as a rational-reflective process that allows individuals to reinterpret disappointment, while tadzakkur strengthens emotional recovery by reconstructing meaning through divine awareness and remembrance. Both serve as complementary mechanisms for cognitive and spiritual regulation, promoting emotional resilience and holistic well-being in Muslim adolescents. This study provides a conceptual contribution to Islamic Psychology by bridging Qur’anic epistemology and modern psychological theory. It also suggests that the integration of tafakkur and tadzakkur can be applied in character education and spiritually-based counseling interventions to help adolescents manage emotional distress constructively.

Abstract

Purpose – This study addresses the psychological distress faced by married Muslim couples who experience infertility and involuntary childlessness, particularly due to intense social and cultural pressures. It aims to explore how Khusyu’ (deep devotion in worship) functions as a religious coping mechanism to reduce stress, anxiety, and stigma associated with this condition Design/methods/approach – A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to capture the lived spiritual and psychological experiences of the participants. The study involved eight purposively selected Muslim couples from Magelang Regency, Indonesia, who had been married for more than three years without having children. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, focusing on their religious practices and coping behaviors Findings – The results show that couples experiencing significant psychological distress engage in  Khusyu’practices, such as obligatory and additional prayers, supplication (du’a), voluntary fasting, and charity (sadaqah), as well as participation in Islamic study groups. These practices help reduce anxiety, foster acceptance of divine destiny, and build emotional resilience, while providing social support that mitigates stigma and strengthens marital harmony. Research implications/limitations – The implications of this study suggest that Khusyu’ as a form of religious coping can help childless couples manage psychological distress. Methodologically, the phenomenological approach enables an in-depth exploration of participants' spiritual and emotional experiences. However, given the qualitative nature of this study and the limited number of participants, the findings cannot be generalized to a broader population. Originality/value – This study provides a unique contribution by examining Khusyu’ as a specific religious coping strategy in the context of infertility among Muslim couples. Unlike previous research, which has focused broadly on religious coping, this study positions Khusyu’ as a central element in promoting psychological well-being and resilience within a distinct cultural and religious framework
