Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul “Politeness Strategies Found in the Movie Mr. Popper’s Penguins”. Adapun tujuan dari penelitian ini yakni, untuk mengidentifikasi jenis dari Strategi Kesopanan yang ditemukan di dalam film Mr.Popper’s Penguins, dan untuk menganalisa faktor yang mempengaruhi pemilihan strategi oleh pembicara di dalam film Mr.Popper’s Penguins. Sumber data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini diambil dari percakapan antara karakter yang terdapat di dalam film Mr.Popper’s Penguins, yang mana dalam hal ini menggunakan metode dokumentasi, serta mencatat data yang telah didapat sebelumnya. Dalam penelitian ini, untuk menganalisa jenis strategi kesopanan yang ditemukan didalam film, serta untuk mengidentifikasi faktor yang dapat mempengaruhi pemilihan strategi diterapkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Brown dan Levinson (1987). Berdasarkan teori yang telah disebutkan diatas, terdapat empat jenis strategi kesopanan yang ditemukan didalam film Mr.Popper’s Penguins, diantaranya strategi bald on record, kesopanan positif, kesopanan negatif, dan strategi off record. Terdapat dua jenis strategi bald on record yang ditemukan didalam film, sembilan strategi pada kesopanan positif, dan hanya lima strategi kesopanan negatif yang dapat ditemukan. Sementara terdapat tiga jenis strategi off record yang ditemukan pada film ini. Selain jenis strategi kesopanan, adapun beberapa faktor yang muncul didalam film, yakni faktor payoffs, dan faktor keadaan.

Abstract

Jurnal ini berjudul “Conflicts Faced by The Main Protagonist in Movie Captain America Civil War”. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi konflik dari karakter protagonis utama dan bagaimanacara mengatasi konflik tersebut. Data dari penelitian ini diambil dari movie yang berjudul Captain America Civil War. Metode untul mengumpulkan data menggunakan metode dokumentasi dan metode untuk mengalisis data menggunakan metode qualitative. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori konflik dari Reaske (1966) untuk mengidentifikasi konflik, teori penyelesaian konflik dari Thomas dan Kilmann (1970). Abstract

Tulisan  ini berjudul " Verbal and Visual Sign on Airlines Advertisements: A Semiotic Study”. Data diambil dari satu sumber yaitu www.youtube.com, dengan teknik observasi dan pencatatan. Skripsi ini menganalisis dan membicarakan  bentuk-bentuk aspek visual dalam Garuda Indonesia dan Singapore Airlines iklan yang berbentuk video dan pengertian dari narasi berdasarkan aspek-aspek verbal didalam kedua iklan. Alasan dari memilih iklan Garuda Indonesia dan Singapore Airlines adalah karena kedua iklan memiliki visualisasi yang baik yang juga merupakan perwakilan Asia Tenggara untuk menjadi maskapai penerbangan terbaik didunia. Terdapat dua teori yang digunakan untuk menganalisis kedua data ini. Teori elemen-elemen komunikasi visual dan teori penggambaran verbal dalam buku yang berjudul “Advertising as Communication” dengan pengarang Dyer (1993) dan juga teori makna dengan pengarang Geoffrey leech (1974) yang berjudul Semantic. Dari analisis tersebut, ditemukan bahwa macam-macam aspek visual dan verbal dengan menganalisis kedua video memiliki makna untuk menarik pemirsa dan membantu mereka mengungkapkan makna yang lebih dalam dari video iklan Garuda Indonesia dan Singapore Airlines.

Abstract

Artikel ini membicarakan tentang efek estetis yang dicapai melalui berfungsinya ironi yang hadir secara dominan pada cerita pendek The Landlady karya Roald Dahl. Ironi dalam berbagai tipe dan penggunaannya dalam cerita pendek ini berhasil membangun efek ketegangan yang intens pada pembaca sehingga pembaca menjadi penasaran mengenai apa yang akan terjadi selanjutnya. Ketegangan terjadi karena tatkala pembaca dengan jelas melihat keterancaman Billy Weaver sebagai calon korban pembunuhan oleh nyonya rumahnya, Billy Weaver sendiri yang langsung berhadapan dengan nyonya rumahnya justru tidak menyadari niat buruk di balik keramahtamahan nyonya rumahnya itu. Dengan demikian, Billy Weaver pun tidak mengambil kesimpulan seperti yang diharapkan pembaca tentang niat negatif nyonya rumahnya walaupun sinyal-sinyal keterancamannya sudah semakin berakumulasi dari sikap dan prilaku nyonya rumahnya yang jelas terbaca dari balik sikap manis yang dihadirkan di permukaan. Estetika ironi ini terbangun bukan saja melalui sikap dan prilaku serba ironis nyonya rumah tersebut, tetapi juga melalui kesenjangan kesadaran yang ada antara Billy Weaver dan pembaca. Kondisi ironis ini bersumber pada kehidupan bermuka dua nyonya rumah, yakni prilaku yang seolah-olah sangat baik di permukaan namun sesungguhnya sadistik di balik itu. Ketakterdugaan sikap dan prilaku nyonya rumah ini mengejutkan dan menegangkan pembaca. Sesungguhnya, ketegangan pembaca bertambah intens ketika mendapati Billy Weaver tetap lugu-lugu (‘innocent’) saja di hadapan nyonya rumahnya yang semakin mencengkeramkan muslihatnya. Pada keterkejutan dan ketegangan akibat prilaku serba ironis nyonya rumah ini dan pada ketidaksabaran pembaca terhadap kepolosan Billy Weaver inilah terletak estetika cerita pendek ini.

Abstract

This research pays special attention to the character analysis in the novel Pride and Prejudice, especially the two main characters, namely Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. In accordance with theories explaining types of character and characterization, the data were carefully analyzed. The analysis focuses on how the characterization of Pride and Prejudice’s two main characters is realized. The aim of this research is to explore characterization of the main characters that is expected to contribute to the study of literature, particularly the existence of characters in the novel. Qualitative method was applied in the analysis. There were two main characters involved in the story, and many data were found to support the analysis of their characterization. Dialogues and narration in the novel were used to introduce the characterization based on three dimensions of characterization. This study found that three dimensions of characterization, including psychological, sociological, and physiological aspects of characterization could be used to make complete and vivid description of the main characters to share the values and message of the story.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims to analyze the coherence of answers by Quora application users thatcontain racist utterances. Answers from Quora users were analyzed for racial prejudicebased on the theory from Blummer (1958) about feelings of empathy that represent racialprejudice. The four feelings referred to by Blummer (1958) are: feeling superior, feelingthat the subordinate race is essentially different, the feeling of claiming ownership ofspecial rights, and the fourth is that the subordinate race has hidden motives for the specialrights of the dominant race. To analyze the coherence of user answers, the theory used isthe theory proposed by Oshima & Hogue (2006) about four ways of achieving coherence.According to Oshima & Hogue (2006), there are four ways to achieve coherence, namely:repeating keywords, using pronouns consistently, using transitional signs, and arrangingideas in a logical order. The result indicates that from the five analyzed data points, fourcan be classified as the feeling of the subordinate group is different and alien, and onecan be identified as the feeling of superiority. The answers are considered as coherence,the writers manage to make a repetition of the key noun, using consistent pronouns, usingtransition signals, and arranging the ideas in logical order.Keywords: coherence, racism, discourse and racism, racial prejudiceABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis koherensi dari jawaban para penggunaaplikasi Quora yang mengandung ujaran-ujaran rasisme. Jawaban dari para penggunaQuora akan dianalisis dari sisi prasangka rasial berdasarkan teori dari Blummer (1958)tentang empat perasaan yang mewakili prasangka rasial. Adapun empat perasaan yangdimaksud oleh Blummer (1958) yaitu: perasaan superior, perasaan bahwa ras bawahanpada hakikatnya berbeda, perasaan pernyataan kepemilikan atas hak-hak istimewakhusus, dan yang keempat adalah bahwa ras bawahan mempunyai motif terselubungterhadap hak khusus dari ras dominan. Untuk menganalisis koherensi dari jawabanpengguna, teori yang digunakan adalah teori koherensi oleh Oshima & Hogue (2006)tentang empat cara mencapai koheren. Menurut Oshima & Hogue (2006) ada empat carauntuk bisa mencapai koherensi yaitu: mengulang kata kunci, menggunakan kata gantisecara konsisten, menggunakan tanda-tanda transisi, dan merangkai ide dengan urutanyang logis. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan, dari lima data yang telah dianalisis, empatdapat diklasifikasikan sebagai perasaan bahwa ras bawahaan pada hakikatnya berbeda,dan satu teridentifikasi sebagai perasaan superior. Jawaban pada penelitian inidianggap koheren, di  mana para penlis mampu untuk mengulang kata kunci, menggunakan kata ganti secara konsisten, menggunakan tanda-tanda transisi, sertamerangkai ide dengan urutan yang logis.Kata Kunci: koherensi, rasisme, wacana dan rasisme, prasangka rasial

Abstract

The present research focuses on flouting maxim in Bohemian Rhapsody movie. The aim of this research is to find out the types of flouting maxim found in Bohemian Rhapsody movie. The data were taken from the Bohemian Rhapsody movie that has been downloaded and they are collected through observation and taking note technique. In this research, the researcher focused on the theory of Grice (1975) in analysing the type of flouting maxims. The descriptive qualitative method was used in analysing the data found in this research. In analysing the data, the researcher used the theory from Grice (1975) about Logic and conversation. Based on Grice theory (1975) “flouting maxims belong to the form of non-observe conversation principle”. The result of the research shows that the types of flouting maxim found in the movie are 44 data. The dominant flouting maxim did by the characters in this movie is the flouting maxim of manner with the frequency of 15 data (34%), following by flouting maxim of quality with frequency of 12 data (27%), next is flouting maxim of quantity with frequency 9 data (21%), and the last one flouting the maxim of relevance which is the type of flouting maxim that occurs the least in this Bohemian Rhapsody movie with a frequency of 8 data (18%). From the data that has been got in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, the character who does the most flouting the maxim is the main character in this movie, Freddie Mercury did all types of floating the maxim. Abstract

This thesis uses Three Aspects of Personality in Psychological, Id, Ego and Super-Ego”. This research aims to identify and explain how the main character surfaces the three aspects of personality in psychological Thor Ragnarok movie. The theory used is from Sigmund Freud theory of Psychoanalysis. Qualitative method is used to analyze the data. The researcher found the psychological dimensions of the main character, such as the id, the ego, and the superego. Thor’s id was shown in his ambition to revenge his sister who has kicked him from Asgard and disrupted life in Asgard. Thor’s ego was shown when he didn’t believe if his hammer could be destroyed because he only knows if his hammer was the strongest. Thor’s super-ego or the moral strength was shown when Thor had nightmares every night that he saw Asgard fall into ruins.

Abstract

This research entitled An Analysis of Conflict Managements used by Félicie in the Movie Leap! (2016) aims to analyze types of conflict management used by the main character to overcome the conflict in the movie Ballerina/Leap. The data source of this research is the movie Leap! (2016) which was published in 2016 as the result of the collaboration of Quad Production, Caramel Film, and Main Journey in 2016 and directed by Eric Warin and Eric summer. The data is was collected through documentation method, by Watching the movie repeatedly, and then the data is identified and selected the data that is used in this research. The collected data is analyzed qualitatively and presented descriptively. A theory that is used in this research is proposed by Rahim (2002) about conflict management. Based on the research, it shows that all types of conflict management proposed by the expert are used by Félicie, the main character in this movie Leap! (2016). There are five occurrences in total, namely Integrating, Obliging, Dominating, Avoiding, and Compromising.

Abstract

The film Friends with Benefits is the data source in this study. In collecting the data through library research by viewing films, reading scripts, and taking notes. In analyzing the data, the qualitative method is used and presented descriptively based on the theory adopted in this study. The theory used in this study is the theory of literature proposed by Wellek and Warren (1949) about characterization. The results of this study showed that only three characterization dimensions were analyzed. In presenting these dimensions, this study presents an overview and/or dialogue from the film. There are three dimensions of the characterization of the main character analyzed in this study: physiological, sociological, and psychological. These physical and psychological characteristics combine to build up Jamie Rellis and Dylan Harper, a romantic person in the film Friends with Benefits.
