Abstract

This study is to find out the types of external conflict faced by the main character in the pound comic on webtoon, and to handle the conflict with five style management strategies faced by the main character in the pound comic on webtoon. The data sources of this study were taken from webtoon. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were analyzed based on the theory proposed by Kenney (1966), about types of conflict and the supporting theory proposed by Thomas and Kilmann (1970), about conflict management strategy. The result of this study showed the source of external conflict happened in the comic, there are man against man and man against society. The conflict also identified the strategy used by the main character in the pound comic on webtoon to handle the external conflict such as, competing, collaborating, compromising, accommodating, and avoiding.

Abstract

This study entitled “Psychological Analysis of The Main Character as Influenced by External Conflicts in the Movie Entitled “Gone Girl”. It is focused on psychological condition of the character as influenced by external conflicts. The aims of this study are to find out the types of external conflicts faced by the main character and to analyze the effect of those external conflicts that the main character faced to her psychological condition as found in the movie entitled “Gone Girl”. This study used theories from Stantont (1956) and Koesnosoebroto (1988) to find out the types of external conflicts and Bernhardt (1953) to analyze the psychological aspect of the main character. Descriptive and qualitative methods were used to analyze the data while observation methods were used to collect the data. The result found that there are 33 external conflicts and 16 internal conflicts faced by the character and in this study the writer will focused on analyzing the external conflicts faced by the main character in Gone Girl movie that influenced her psychological condition.

Abstract

When writing a piece of art work called poetry, the poets often utilize figurative language to express their ideas and feelings. Figurative language will beautify the poetry of which the readers will put their interests. Typically, figurative language in a poem includes paradox to emphasize the poem’s meaning. This research focuses on types and meaning of paradox in the Rudyard Kipling’s selected poem. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the figure of speech in Rudyard Kipling’s selected poems. The research found 17 (seventeen) of paradoxes consist of 7 (seven) rhetorical paradox, 7 (seven) social paradox, 2 (two) logical paradox and 1 (one) philosophy of science paradox. The rhetorical and social paradoxes are the most current paradoxes in Kipling's poem, according to the research on paradox in the poem. The notion of each phrase to which they belong, as well as the meaning of the paradox, are used to define the interpretations of paradox. In Kipling's poem, paradox was exploited to make lines more colourful, inventive, and meaningful. These are there to bring clarity, colour, and persuasion to the novel.

Abstract

The study aims to find out and analyze the meaning of every type of figurative language in the song lyrics. Figurative language is a language style used by the writer or speaker to convey a message imaginatively and in a mode which aims to make the reader get effect from language style. The data in this research were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods and based on the linguistic theory that is used in semantics. This study proposes two of problem those are, first what types of figurative language and second what is the meaning of the figurative language used in Ariana Grande’s song lyrics. To get the meaning of those figurative languages, several expert theories were used for this research on the classification and definition of figurative language. There are two theories that were used in conducting this research. This first theory of types of figurative language is proposed by the expert, Knickerbocker and Reninger and the second theory of figurative language and the types of meaning theories by Leech.

Abstract

This study aims to identify knowledge about literary studies, especially the intrinsic elements of a literary work, which is limited to the type of external conflict in Todd Philips' Joker movie. The formulation of the problem in this study are (1) How does the character resolve the conflict in the Joker movie. This study uses a quantitative and qualitative descriptive method to provide a clearer picture of the problem under study. The data from this study were taken using the observation method through four stages, namely watching the Joker movie. Then, find and record the type of external conflict spoken by the characters in Joker movie. Reading the Joker movie script and finally, the writer categorizes the analysis of the types of data findings based on the type of external conflict. There is only one type of external conflicts found, namely man against man. The types of external conflicts can be distinguished based on the data found. The results show that there are 3 types of external conflicts found in the Joker movie.

Abstract

This research analyzes Ugly Love, a novel by Collen Hovers (2014). Ugly Love in is one of Collen Hovers novels that reflect the reality of life. This research focuses on the personality of Miles, as the main character in the novel. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative study. The aim of the study is to see the Miles personalities as the main character of Ugly Love. By examining the character dialog and quotes of the novel, and related issues on the topic. In order to achieve the goal if this study the researcher applied the theory of personality traits that purposed by McCrae and Costa (1992). Some characteristic that represent Mile’s character traits are: angry, nervous, jealous, panic, sensitive.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims to analyze the coherence of answers by Quora application users thatcontain racist utterances. Answers from Quora users were analyzed for racial prejudicebased on the theory from Blummer (1958) about feelings of empathy that represent racialprejudice. The four feelings referred to by Blummer (1958) are: feeling superior, feelingthat the subordinate race is essentially different, the feeling of claiming ownership ofspecial rights, and the fourth is that the subordinate race has hidden motives for the specialrights of the dominant race. To analyze the coherence of user answers, the theory used isthe theory proposed by Oshima & Hogue (2006) about four ways of achieving coherence.According to Oshima & Hogue (2006), there are four ways to achieve coherence, namely:repeating keywords, using pronouns consistently, using transitional signs, and arrangingideas in a logical order. The result indicates that from the five analyzed data points, fourcan be classified as the feeling of the subordinate group is different and alien, and onecan be identified as the feeling of superiority. The answers are considered as coherence,the writers manage to make a repetition of the key noun, using consistent pronouns, usingtransition signals, and arranging the ideas in logical order.Keywords: coherence, racism, discourse and racism, racial prejudiceABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis koherensi dari jawaban para penggunaaplikasi Quora yang mengandung ujaran-ujaran rasisme. Jawaban dari para penggunaQuora akan dianalisis dari sisi prasangka rasial berdasarkan teori dari Blummer (1958)tentang empat perasaan yang mewakili prasangka rasial. Adapun empat perasaan yangdimaksud oleh Blummer (1958) yaitu: perasaan superior, perasaan bahwa ras bawahanpada hakikatnya berbeda, perasaan pernyataan kepemilikan atas hak-hak istimewakhusus, dan yang keempat adalah bahwa ras bawahan mempunyai motif terselubungterhadap hak khusus dari ras dominan. Untuk menganalisis koherensi dari jawabanpengguna, teori yang digunakan adalah teori koherensi oleh Oshima & Hogue (2006)tentang empat cara mencapai koheren. Menurut Oshima & Hogue (2006) ada empat carauntuk bisa mencapai koherensi yaitu: mengulang kata kunci, menggunakan kata gantisecara konsisten, menggunakan tanda-tanda transisi, dan merangkai ide dengan urutanyang logis. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan, dari lima data yang telah dianalisis, empatdapat diklasifikasikan sebagai perasaan bahwa ras bawahaan pada hakikatnya berbeda,dan satu teridentifikasi sebagai perasaan superior. Jawaban pada penelitian inidianggap koheren, di  mana para penlis mampu untuk mengulang kata kunci, menggunakan kata ganti secara konsisten, menggunakan tanda-tanda transisi, sertamerangkai ide dengan urutan yang logis.Kata Kunci: koherensi, rasisme, wacana dan rasisme, prasangka rasial
