Abstract

Maluku possesses substantial agricultural potential, particularly in peanut cultivation, which is extensively practiced in Uwen Pantai Village, East Taniwel Sub-district, West Seram Regency. Groundnut cultivation thrives due to favorable land conditions, minimal maintenance requirements, and relatively short harvest cycles of 3–4 months. The competitive market price positions peanuts as a promising commodity for enhancing community welfare. However, current peanut production and marketing practices remain predominantly traditional, operating at limited scales without adherence to market standards. This community empowerment program aims to enhance local capacity in roasted peanut processing through the introduction of modified rotating sand roaster technology. Employing a transformative learning approach, community members receive comprehensive training in technology application and market-oriented business management. The modified rotating sand roaster features innovative blunt blades positioned strategically within the sample tube to facilitate uniform heat distribution, ensuring consistent product quality with distinctive roasted flavor and aroma. The program encompasses socialization activities, participatory training, technology application, and continuous mentoring in production, packaging, and marketing. Initial implementation results demonstrate significant improvements: production capacity increased from small batches to 5–10 kg per cycle (2–3 hours), product packaging advanced from plain plastic to full-color labeled aluminum foil, and profit margins reached 84.48%. This initiative is expected to improve product quality and competitiveness, expand market access, facilitate business legalization, and ultimately contribute to post-pandemic economic recovery in Uwen Pantai Village.Abstract A maximum of 250 Indonesian words printed in italics with Cambria 10 point. The abstract should be clear, descriptive and should provide a brief overview of community service issues undertaken / researched. Abstracts include reasons for the selection of topics or the importance of research topics / community service, methods of research / devotion and outcome summary. The abstract should end with a comment about the importance of the result or a brief conclusion.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Buru Island in Maluku Province is one of the sites of unlicensed gold mining activities (Illegal Gold Mining, IGM), which may lead to environmental pollution due to improper waste management. This study aimed to analyze the concentrations of mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) as hazardous pollutants (Hazardous and Toxic Materials, HTM) in gold processing tailings from Dafa and Debowae Villages, Buru Island. Tailings samples were collected from three different sites. Mercury concentrations were determined using Cold Vapor AAS, while As was analyzed using Hydride-Generation AAS based on the APHA-AWWA-WEF standard method (2005). The results showed that Hg levels in tailings from Debowae Village (Location 1 and 2) were 399.18 mg/kg and 286.39 mg/kg dry weight, respectively, whereas Dafa Village (Location 3) reached 1182.51 mg/kg dry weight. Arsenic concentrations ranged from 0.59 to 0.74 mg/kg dry weight across all locations. According to Indonesia Government Regulation PP No. 22 of 2021 on Hazardous Waste Management, Hg concentrations in all study sites exceeded the quality standard, whereas As levels remained below the permissible limits. These findings highlight the serious potential risk of mercury contamination in artisanal gold mining areas on Buru Island.

Abstract

Activated carbon is a cheap carbon material with high specific surface area, porosity, and electrical conductivity. This fact makes the various applications of activated carbon as an adsorbent, water treatment, and energy sector. Activated carbon dispersion studies facilitate the application of activated carbon as a primary material in the design of electrodes in fuel cells and batteries. In this study, dispersion studies of activated carbon were carried out in an aqueous system using surface active agents (surfactants) Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB), Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS), and Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80). The ratio of activated carbon to surfactants varies from 1:0–1:5 for each surfactant. The UV-Vis spectrophotometer measurements at a wavelength of 200–500 nm showed that Tween 80 surfactant with a 0,05 g activated carbon with 3 mL Tween 80 could disperse activated carbon in water solvents better than CTAB and SDS.
