Abstract

This paper tries to find out kinds of emotions appearing from the novel Penakluk Ujung Dunia (Conqueror of the World's Cape). lt told us about the struggle for land among Batak ethnic groups near Lake Toba a long time ago, triggered by the population growth. One ethnic group defeated another under a young commander, Ronggur. They did not only seize the enemies teritory, but also their women and children. One of them, Tio, became Ronggur's slave. He actually disagreed with the way of enlarging territory by attacking others. He believed—he got it from his dream—that someone had asked him to go along the river to its end to find a "new world". The chief and all villagers did not agree with him, because it was the place of their gods. Human being was prohibited to go there. His violation made him banished from his tribe and lost all his rights and sentenced to death. But, he managed to escape and carry on his intention by rowing along the river accompanied by Tio-who later became his wife. This novel expresses the mental structure of one culture in Indonesia at a certain time. By doing textual analysis on verbal and non-verbal expression through words, phrases, and sentences, we could describe the emotional condition of the Batak ethnic group at a certain time. Textual approach in this research is not only based on psychology. It also uses language as symbolic means.

Abstract

Bahasa Indonesia, which is the national and official language in Indonesia, is the result of the development of the High Malay Language (High Malay) in Riau. As the language used in the literature published by Balai Pustaka, the High Malay is respected as a language that is higher; than other languages used by the people of the Archipelago in the period before Indonesian independence in 1945. One of the lower languages is Low Malay Language (Low Malay). Some literary works written in this language were printed by printing presses belonging to individuals consisting of indigenous and Chinese groups. The Low Malay style was used in writing romance to make the stories feel more alive. This language of conversation should be counted as one type of language that contributes to the Indonesian language. The range of its uses is vast. However, with the development of politics in Indonesia, the Low Malay is once again marginalized. The language now only lives in conversation, yet it remains alive and developed along with the development of the times and the many influences of foreign languages on Indonesian language.

Tujuan penulisan makalah ini adalah memperjelas apa yang dimaksudChineseStudies atau Sinologi, asal mula tradisi Chinese Studies di Indonesia, serta fungsi dankedudukan bahasa Mandarin di Indonesia. Abstract

We usually talk about food, the way it is served, its types, and its beauty aspects in terms of satisfying the pleasures of the human eye and sense of taste. Therefore, in gastronomy, the things above receive great attention. Unsurprisingly, culinary art institutions have been established up to the academic level since decades ago. However, this paper presents a slightly different field of gastronomy, namely gastronomy for the ancestral spirits prayer ceremony, named coki/cuki prayer in Hokkian language (祖祭) which is still practiced today by the Chinese Peranakan of Palembang or we can say “Peranakan Palembang”, South Sumatra. This ritual ceremony, which is hundreds of years old is quite interesting, carried out by people of Chinese descent, both Totok and Peranakan, old and young generations. This paper focuses only on the Chinese Peranakan in Palembang. From here the question arises, why is this custom still maintained in modern times, even though the costs involved are not small? What type of food shows cultural acculturation? From a gastronomic point of view, how are the dishes served arranged? Are there rules? Research data consists of photos and information obtained from informants, and also researchers’ observations of Chinese Peranakan Palembang families because they are considered to know more about and carry out the rules related to the teaching of Confucianism (Tan, 1979). Shenism (Gondomono, 2013) and filial piety or 孝xiào in Confucian religious teachings are two philosophical thinking to know the reason why this ceremony is still carried out today. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The data from the informants will be sorted based on the type of dish, and how it is served, then will be described qualitatively, so that an understanding will be gained regarding the preservation of this prayer ceremony. The novelty of this paper is to increase knowledge about the existence of the culinary for spirits and the philosophical background.

Abstract

There is much research done concerning the disposal 把 BA construction. Much of them examined why an object should be transposed to in front of the verb, and what kind of other elements behind the verb are. One of the other elements is verbal reduplication. Few researchers examine the meaning of verbal reduplication. The research aim is to guide the readers of Chinese texts on how to determine the meaning of verbal reduplication in 把 construction. Li & Thompson (1981), Zhuo Jing (2005) suggested delimitative and tentative meaning, and according to Wen (2017) “trial” is another meaning. The problem is how we can determine those meanings? The above researchers only give the verbal reduplication meaning from a sentence consisting of 把 construction. I used the above theory to ascertain which meaning is conveyed by considering co-text and context of 把 construction. The data was from 5 novels and 3 dramas from the situs www.millionbook.com, www.kanunu8.com, and www.juben68.com. The method done was considering the co-text and context where 把 construction appeared. The result obtained indicate that there is a combination of delimitative and tentative meaning in certain contexts. The novelty of this research is to guide the readers to ascertain which meaning is conveyed by verbal reduplication in 把 construction.

Abstract

Metaphors play a crucial role in shaping how society understands and responds to conflicts, such as the genocide in Gaza by Israel. Metaphors can illustrate the impact of events, direct global attention to injustices, and deepen the understanding of the scale and intensity of the humanitarian crisis in the region in a way that is more easily comprehensible. In the international media coverage of Al-Jazeera, metaphorical expressions are often used to describe Israel’s attacks and the suffering that occurred in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. The purpose of this study is to explain the concepts produced from the use of metaphorical expressions related to Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip in Al-Jazeera news articles. This study applies Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory and Charteris-Black's critical metaphor analysis. Based on the analysis, four metaphorical concepts of the Gaza genocide were identified: ISRAEL’S AGGRESSION IS GAZA’S GENOCIDE, THE GAZA GENOCIDE IS A CATASTROPHE, PALESTINIANS ARE NOT HUMAN, and GAZA IS A GHOST TOWN. The metaphor concepts depict a social reality schema in the form of identity, force, scale, and unity/multiplicity that reflects the social reality of violence, oppression, and dehumanization. The four metaphor concepts show the process of Israel’s attacks, a depiction of life in the Gaza Strip, the dehumanization of Palestinians, and the impact of Israel’s genocide on Gaza. These are closely related to Israel’s colonialism practices which aim to control the region through occupation, land stealing, and the erasure of Palestinian identity and rights.

Abstract

An expressive illocutionary speech act is a speech in which a speaker expresses his thoughts and feelings of being thanking and apologizing. Usually, one utterance conveys one meaning, but in this research, one sentence has two to four additional meanings. This phenomenon came from elements outside the sentence that affect the presence of the additional meaning. The aim is to present the indication that one utterance can have more than one meaning and expand the theory of illocutionary speech acts. This research used a qualitative method to examine the role of context in these additional meanings. Vanderveen & Macqueen's list of performative verbs (1990) is a guide in analyzing 96 data to determine the role of context. The result shows that some data have multiple senses of expressive speech acts. There are two, three, or four meanings in one sentence. To praise one is the most common speech function found. When admiring someone, the speaker also announces his agreement and offers something in the future. The many tasks of praising found in the data show the author of this children's novel to set an example for readers, especially children, to respect others with more than one meaning.
