Abstract

Reduplication as a word-formation process in Mandarin, which is one of the most difficult knowledge to comprehend for scholar and student. Theoretically this research offers an approach that is different from what has been made by previous researchers. Using the M.D.S Simatupang free context approach this research contrasts the reduplicative forms of all word classes and shows the relationships between them (AA, AABB, ABAB, ABB) and their basic forms (A, AB), then based on test of categorical word and test of lexical decomposition as proposed by J.W.M Verhaar, this study analyzes and explains reduplication and inflectional reduplication in Mandarin in order to students understand as their meaning vocabularies. As a result, this research examines the derivational and inflectional reduplication in Mandarin all at once can disseminate the use of morphological theory. In addition, this study discusses Mandarin reduplication based on various word classes that are contained as a basis for the relevant form of reduplication. Beginner research results will be presented in this study in order to stimulate more complete writing, it will be better if this research can be disseminated in order to add learning and reading material for future research.

Abstract

Literacy cannot be separated from language skills. The most basic language skills are the ability to compose meaningful utterances. For that purpose, a proper understanding of the sentence-forming elements and their functions is needed. Unfortunately, the definitions of the two sentence element functions, namely objects and complements, in KBBI still overlap. The overlapping definition can confuse language users. This paper aims to clarify the differences between object and complement and to correct the inaccuracies in the definition of these two words. Thus, the definition of each of the two functions becomes more appropriate and easily understood by Indonesian language learners. This research was conducted with a functionalism approach through the analysis of syntactic and semantic functions, by paying attention to lexicographic principles. The analysis was carried out on six naturally occurring sentences. The sentences are taken from the Indonesian web corpus. The results of the data analysis in this study indicate that objects and complements are indeed different. From these differences clear and non-overlapping boundaries are obtained.

Abstract

New entry proposal in a dictionary: A case study for the entry lotusThe object of this study is the word lotus. In the Comprehensive Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), the lotus entry has only one meaning within the botanical domain. However, the word lotus is also present and used in the context of Buddhism in Indonesia. Based on this fact, it is suggested to add a new meaning to the entry. The problem is to decide whether the new meaning is a polysemy or a homonym, and the criteria used to determine this.  The purpose of this research is to provide input to the Language Development and Fostering Agency to add new word entries to the KBBI using a case study of the word 'lotus' entry. Our research results on the word 'lotus' can expand the knowledge of the Indonesian people from the domain of botany to the domain of religion. In order to determine whether the entry is a polysemy or a homonym is carried out through Peirce's semiotic theory developed by Ogden and Richards to examine the relationship between three components that make up the word lotus as a sign. The research method involves analyzing the difference between the basic meaning and the new meaning, whether there is a development of a new meaning or a completely different meaning from the basic meaning. Unlike the previous studies, this research views meaning as a sign component. The lotus entry is a sign consisting of symbol, thought or reference, and reference components.

Abstract

Interjection has no concrete meaning like noun, verb, nor adjective. It appears in spoken language to express one’s emotion in a certain condition or situation. The interjection 哎呀 aiya is one of the most frequently used interjection in modern Chinese. Concerning哎呀, Oxford Concise Chinese Dictionary (2010:1) only mentions that 哎呀is used to express surprise or discontent. We presume that there are more emotions available to be expressed. Based on the lack of types of emotions in the Chinese dictionary, the aim of this research is to examine kinds of emotions by analyzing the spoken language from a Chinese drama. The data is taken from dialogues containing 哎呀. This allows the researchers to observe the types of positive and negative emotions of 哎呀 in detail. This research uses Paolo Santangelo’s theory of emotion. He classifies emotions into 5 categories: (1) positive expectation and interaction, (2) satisfactory affects, (3) negative projection, (4) aggressive-opposing emotions, and (5) unsatisfactory affects. The method used to ascertain the type of emotions is done by considering the context where 哎呀appeared. From the context, it will determine the type of emotions. The result shows that the interjection 哎呀can express 5 types of emotions, such as hope, empathy, surprise, happiness, satisfy, worry, fear, angry, etc. The novelty of this research is to give types of emotions in detail.

Abstract

Since Political Reformed in 1998, teaching of Mandarin language burst out everywhere. Many schools— from primary until senior high school, even kindergarten—teach Mandarin. Having skill in Mandarin has become one prerequisite for new employees recruitment. In order to anticipate this situation, many schoolmasters without having understanding about our National Language Political Policy thought that Mandarin should be taught. They do not know that after nearly 30 years Mandarin was prohibited, the teaching Mandarin planning is really hard to be realised. There is no Mandarin language teacher, text book for Indonesian students, curriculum and syllabus, etc. In fact, many schools try to find old people who were educated in Chinese Schools before the era of late President Suharto to teach Mandarin. The result is far from what they expect. The Department of Education and Culture tried to overcome these problems, but there are still many problems facing us. This paper tried to show the problems, and gave suggesstion to overcome.

Abstract

1998 was the year of Mandarin teaching resurrection in Indonesia after 30 years prohibited. Since then, many schools begin to teach Mandarin as an extracurricular subject. In the last two years it becomes an intracurricular subject. Since there was no Chinese school for almost 30 years, consequently there was no publication on Mandarin student's book, no Mandarin teachers. Nowadays, suddenly Mandarin teachers, student's book was highly needed. Many schools use Singapore/Taiwan's book. This rises problems, because Singapore/Taiwan's students language circumstance is different from Indonesian students. The result is far from what we expected. This article proposed some aids based on the need of Indonesian's student. Department of Education should set up a team consisting of Indonesian experts in Mandarin language teaching and Chinese linguistic to compile syllabus, student's book. It should base on Indonesian Language Politics and the need of Indonesian's student which differ from Chinese schools 30 years ago.

Abstract

Phatic particles are rarely discussed, especially in the scope of syntax, even though the notion of phatic communion had been proposed by Malinowski in 1923. In Indonesian language, Harimurti (1986) had pioneered the inclusion of phatic expression into the Indonesian parts of speech. In Mandarin language, there has not been any special interest to discuss it. Generally phatic particles overlap with interjections and interrogatives. However, this article discusses about some evidences about the differences among them.
