Abstract

Socialization of organic fertilizer for horticultural crops aims to provide information regarding the benefits of using organic fertilizer for sustainable agriculture, providing education on making organic fertilizer from agricultural waste. This community service activity was carried out in Central Kuta Village, Karo Regency. Participants in this activity were 35 people from Central Kuta Village, Karo Regency. They work as farmers on horticultural crops such as vegetables and fruit. The methods used were lectures, demonstrations and discussions regarding the benefits of organic fertilizer and how to make organic fertilizer using agricultural waste. The results of service activities show that there is community awareness and interest in processing agricultural waste into organic fertilizer. This is proven by the appreciation and enthusiasm of the community in discussions. People are interested in using their agricultural waste to be processed into organic fertilizer because it can maintain soil fertility or improve soil structure and from an economic perspective it is enough to minimize the budget for purchasing fertilizer.

Abstract

Petani → Pengepul Pedagang besar → Pengecer Pedagang → Konsumen Akhir III. Petani → Perantara Pedagang Pengepul desa → Pedagang Pengepul besar → Pengecer Pedagang→ Konsumen Akhir.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sustainability of organic fertilizer use in lowland rice crops in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. The study focused on the agronomic, ecological, and socio-economic aspects of the application of organic fertilizer as a substitute or supplement to inorganic fertilizers. The study was conducted using a descriptive analytical approach using survey methods and literature studies in rice fields in six sub-districts, rice production centers in Deli Serdang Regency. Data were collected through structured interviews with 120 lowland rice farmers and field observations during the 2023/2024 planting season. The results showed that consistent use of organic fertilizers increased soil organic carbon content from an average of 1.2% to 2.4% after three consecutive planting seasons. Lowland rice productivity on land applied with combined organic fertilizers reached 6.2 tons/ha of dry grain (GKG), higher than on conventional land with an average production of 5.4 tons/ha of dry grain (GKG). Sustainability analysis showed that the application of organic fertilizers had a positive impact on soil quality, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and increased farmers' income by 18.5% in the medium term. The main obstacles identified include limited availability of organic raw materials, relatively high initial costs, and farmers' lack of technical knowledge in organic fertilizer production and application. Integrated government policy support and ongoing training programs are needed to encourage widespread adoption of organic fertilizer in Deli Serdang Regency.

Abstract

Shallots (Allium ascalonicum L.) are a strategic horticultural commodity that has high economic value and great potential to be developed in Humbang Hasundutan (Humbahas) Regency, North Sumatra. This regency has very supportive agro-ecological conditions, namely an altitude of 330–2,075 meters above sea level, temperatures ranging from 17°C–29°C, and land availability of 250,271.02 hectares. This study aims to: (1) analyse the potential and existing conditions of shallot development in Humbahas Regency; (2) identify internal and external factors that influence shallot development; (3) formulate a strategy for developing shallots as a sustainable regional superior commodity. The method used is qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis with a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis approach and Location Quotient (LQ) analysis. The research results show that shallot productivity in Humbahas reaches 13 tons/ha under optimal conditions, with total food estate production for the 2020–2022 period reaching 165 tons. A SWOT analysis places Humbahas shallot development in the SO (Strength-Opportunity) quadrant, making an aggressive strategy the primary choice. Recommended strategies include: strengthening farmer institutions, adopting modern cultivation technology (True Shallot Seed/TSS), developing value chains and agro-industry, and consistent local government policy support to support the sustainability of shallot farming.

Abstract

Post-flood land rehabilitation efforts are needed to restore soil productivity sustainably, one of which is through the use of eco-enzyme-based biochar. This study aims to analyse the effectiveness of eco-enzyme-based biochar application in increasing post-flood soil fertility on agricultural land in Gampong Tupah, Karang Baru District, Aceh Tamiang Regency. The study used a field experiment method with a non-factorial Randomised Block Design (RBD) consisting of five treatment levels, namely P0 (control), P1, P2, P3, and P4. The parameters observed included chemical, physical, and biological properties of the soil. The results showed that the application of eco-enzyme-based biochar increased soil pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, cation exchange capacity, total porosity, and soil microorganism populations, while also reducing bulk density. The results showed that the P4 treatment, soil pH from 4.82 to 6.21, organic C from 1.26% to 3.08%, total N from 0.15% to 0.32%, available P from 8.15 to 23.91 ppm, CEC from 13.84 to 28.84 cmol(+) kg?¹, total porosity from 42.18% to 56.45%, and soil microorganism population from 2.10 × 10? to 10.14 × 10? CFU g?¹, accompanied by a decrease in bulk density from 1.47 to 1.16 g cm?³ compared to the control.
