Abstract

Abstract

Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) is a payment method that allows consumers to purchase goods and pay for them later within a specified period. This study aims to explore the influence of financial knowledge, financial behavior, and self-control on the financial well-being of BNPL users in Indonesia, where the service is becoming increasingly popular, particularly among the younger generation. The research sample focuses on Millennials and Gen Z in Indonesia who have used BNPL services in the past six months. The analytical tool used is Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) based on SmartPLS. The results indicate that while financial knowledge is only meaningful when mediated by financial behaviour, financial behaviour and self-control have a beneficial impact on financial well-being. These findings highlight the importance of financial education and the role of BNPL providers in offering features such as payment reminders and credit limits to support users' financial well-being.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the role of Intellectual Capital (IC), including Human Capital (HC), Structural Capital (SC), and Relationship Capital (RC), as moderating variables in the relationship between business efficiency and financial performance, measured by Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Sales (ROS) in Creative Economy-based Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Palembang City. Method: Using financial data from MSMEs between 2020 and 2023, this study employs a quantitative approach and a survey method. The study population consisted of 1,233 MSMEs across 15 creative economy subcategories, guided by the Department of Industry and Trade of Palembang City. A total of 400 respondents were selected using Slovin's formula and purposive sampling. Data were collected through direct interviews and questionnaires and analyzed using the Panel Least Squares Method. Results: The findings reveal that Business efficiency significantly influences ROA but not ROS. Human capital enhances the impact of business efficiency on both ROA and ROS, whereas customer capital does not strengthen this relationship. Structural capital boosts the effect of business efficiency on ROA but not on ROS. Limitations: This study is confined to Palembang City and the creative economy MSME sector, necessitating cautious generalization to other regions or sectors. Future research should explore additional moderating variables beyond IC.   Contribution: This study contributes to the understanding of IC's role in enhancing business efficiency and its subsequent impact on the financial performance of creative economy-based MSMEs. Novelty: This research highlights the critical importance of managing human capital and structural capital to improve financial outcomes, providing new insights into the factors influencing the performance of creative-economy MSMEs.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of financial technology (fintech) adoption on unemployment rates in 77 developing countries with observation periods in 2014, 2017, and 2021. Fintech is represented by four main indicators, namely bank account ownership (BA), internet use for payments (IU), digital transactions (DP), and mobile money account ownership (MMA). The research data were sourced from the Global Findex Database and the World Bank, analyzed using panel data regression with a Random Effect Model (REM) approach through the Generalized Least Squares (GLS) method. The results of the study show that economic growth (GDP growth) has a significant negative effect on unemployment rates, in accordance with Okun's law. In terms of fintech, bank account ownership (BA) has a significant negative effect on unemployment, confirming the role of formal financial access in increasing employment opportunities. Conversely, internet use for payments (IU) has a significant positive effect on unemployment, indicating that passive utilization has not been able to encourage the creation of new jobs. Meanwhile, the variables of digital transactions (DP) and mobile money account ownership (MMA) did not show a significant effect on unemployment. Overall, the results of the study confirm that fintech has the potential to reduce unemployment rates in developing countries, but its impact is highly dependent on the form of adoption and the level of active use. The results have significant implications for financial inclusion policies and the role of financial technology in creating job opportunities.
