Abstract

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze business performance models using innovation capabilities, which are rarely used to improve business performance. Design/methodology/approach – The research method used is quantitative, collecting data from entrepreneurs using questionnaires and analyzing them using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling Finding/Results – The findings of this study indicate that there is no significant relationship between innovation capabilities and business performance, and there is no moderating effect of technology access on the relationship between innovation capabilities and business performance. Originality/Value – This study contributes to the literature by uncovering a 'performance paradox', where innovation capability—contrary to conventional theories—shows no significant impact on business performance. It shifts the academic focus from internal innovation processes to the critical necessity of direct technology access as a primary driver for business resilience in the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of Islamic financial inclusion on poverty alleviation in Palopo City, Indonesia, with specific attention to the mediating role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It addresses whether access to Sharia-compliant financial services can generate inclusive economic outcomes through MSME development in a secondary city context. A quantitative approach was used by surveying 100 MSME owners who utilize Islamic financial services in Palopo City. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling based on MSME registration, business experience, and use of Sharia financial products. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to test the direct and indirect relationships among Islamic financial inclusion, MSME performance, and poverty alleviation. The results show that Islamic financial inclusion has a positive and significant effect on poverty alleviation and MSME performance. However, MSME performance does not significantly affect poverty alleviation and does not mediate the relationship between Islamic financial inclusion and poverty alleviation. This indicates that Islamic financial inclusion may improve welfare directly, but MSME growth alone is insufficient to translate financial access into poverty reduction. This study contributes to Islamic finance and development economics by challenging the assumption that financial inclusion automatically reduces poverty through MSME performance. Focusing on Palopo City, it provides micro-level evidence that Sharia financial inclusion requires complementary business capacity, market access, and institutional support to become an effective poverty alleviation strategy.

Abstract

The development of Islamic finance has become increasingly important in supporting financial inclusion and economic growth in Indonesia. However, the sustainability of its growth is closely related to technological innovation and institutional quality. This study aims to examine the short-run and long-run effects of technological innovation and institutional quality on the development of Islamic finance in Indonesia. Using a quantitative approach, this study employs annual time-series data from the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), the World Bank, and the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI) for the period 2011–2024. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model is applied to analyze both short-term and long-term relationships among the variables. The results indicate that technological innovation has a positive and significant effect on Islamic finance development in both the short and long run, suggesting its role in improving efficiency, expanding financial access, and strengthening the digital Islamic finance ecosystem. In contrast, institutional quality significantly influences Islamic finance development only in the short run, while its long-run effect is insignificant. These findings imply that technological advancement is a key driver of sustainable Islamic finance growth, whereas institutional improvements require continuous structural reforms to generate lasting impacts. This study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the dynamic roles of technology and institutions in Indonesia’s Islamic finance sector.

Abstract

Labor market transformation from traditional to modern sectors is a critical milestone for economic development, yet regional disparities in emerging economies persist. This study investigates the impact of human capital and institutional quality on labor market transformation across 34 provinces in Indonesia over the period of 2015–2025. Employing a panel data regression with a Fixed Effect Model (FEM) approach on 374 observations, and controlling for economic growth and regional investment, the empirical results reveal that both human capital and institutional quality significantly drive the structural shift of labor toward the industrial and service sectors. Specifically, higher educational attainment and better democratic governance accelerate the absorption of labor into high-productivity sectors. Furthermore, economic growth and investment act as robust catalysts in this structural transformation. These findings suggest that to optimize the demographic dividend, regional policymakers must not rely solely on physical investment but should synergize aggressive human capital development with institutional governance reforms
