Abstract

This study aims to reveal the relationship between science and the plantation industry on colonial expansion in East Sumatra. In this study, science is regarded as a colonial construction, which in the context of East Sumatra was used as a tool for colonial expansion, supporting the process of surplus accumulation through the plantation industry. This research applied the historical method, in which analysis was carried out on primary sources such as colonial scientific publications, travelogues, newspapers, and magazines. An examination of these primary sources was conducted by analyzing the text and the context. The decolonial perspective provides an analytical framework for disentangling the colonial relations and conditions behind every scientific project and its publication in East Sumatra. It turns out that the rationale of colonial science was formulated in favor of colonial plantation industry. To conclude, it is apparent that the relationship between science and the plantation industry was intense and symbiotic. The plantation industry was able to thrive with the support of scientific rationality, and conversely, geography, geology, agronomy and health flourished with the financial support from plantation companies.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the population growth issue in East Sumatra during the colonial period, which is closely related to the interests of the plantation industry. The limited historiography of East Sumatra underlies this paper because it interprets population growth as a matter of capitalist plantation production relations. East Sumatra has experienced significant population growth since plantation companies initiated and encouraged migration to meet the need for cheap labor for accumulation. Applying historical methods and a political economy approach, this paper emphasizes that population growth directly implies capitalist plantation production relations. An important conclusion from this study is that changes in the population structure in East Sumatra during the colonial period were closely related to the interests of labor issues of the plantation industry. The forced labor regime under the poenale sanction scheme prompted Chinese labour migration. Furthermore, the poenale sanctie eradication has shifted the labor regime to the free worker promoting the colonization program of Javanese coolies. This shift eventually greatly influenced the structure and composition of the East Sumatra population. It is important to note that this study includes the migration outside the interests of the plantation industry, which was carried out independently by residents in the vicinity who were interested in East Sumatra’s economic growth.

Abstract

Veterans of the war of independence revolution are key witnesses in the history of the Indonesian people's struggle to seize and maintain independence and post-independence. The stories of the sacrifices of these heroic veterans are the most common examples of Indonesian nationalism. However, after Indonesia's independence lasted for 78 years. The stories of the sacrifices of these heroic veterans are the most common examples of Indonesian nationalism. The increasingly old age of the veterans makes it necessary to carry out documentation of historical sources owned by these veterans in a memoir and write their experiences in a book. The Community Service Team of the History Study Program, University of Jambi, held an inventory, mentoring and writing of the history of veteran families in Jambi City. It is hoped that this activity can provide an example and raise nationalism among the young generation of Jambi today.

Abstract

Further research has been conducted on the role of the Indonesian National Army and the Indonesian laskar after the declaration of independence on 17 August 1945 and during the revolutionary period from 1945 to 1949. However, after decolonization in the 1950s, military history including the lives of its members and their personal lives received less space in the narrative of military history. Peace veteran is a title given specifically to young Indonesians who had participated as special forces under the auspices of the United Nations. These young men did not only come from the TNI but also from student regiments who had the opportunity to join this special peacekeeping force. The main focus of this article revolves around their efforts to guard the border between Egypt and ‘Israel’ during the war in the Middle East. This article will use oral sources and personal documents from various Indonesian peacekeeping forces who served during this period. The results of the study show that although they were faced with uncertain situations, far from their families, and preparing to face the enemy, there was another side to their experiences, namely, meeting colleagues from other countries, language gaps, and other “normal” activities that they were still able to carry out while on duty.
