Abstract

This paper discusses the ability of the Kerinci people to adapt during the recovery process after the earthquake catastrophic in June 1909, when they had to deal with massive damage, environmental changes, various internal limitations, inadequate support from external elements, and the impact of colonial political and military annexation. The research utilizes colonial government report documents, written records of eyewitnesses, newspaper reports, and oral traditions. Inspired by the concept of "everyday forms of resistance" from James C. Scott, the daily life of Kerinci people is understood as a resistance which is able to break free from dependency by utilizing its own socio-cultural potential. The Kerinci people fought against the disruption of the earthquake and were able to transform helplessness into strength. They did not depend on the colonial government in the process of rebuilding and recovering after the earthquake, because adat which has synergized with religion and love for the homeland, is able to make the population survive.

Abstract

Veterans of the war of independence revolution are key witnesses in the history of the Indonesian people's struggle to seize and maintain independence and post-independence. The stories of the sacrifices of these heroic veterans are the most common examples of Indonesian nationalism. However, after Indonesia's independence lasted for 78 years. The stories of the sacrifices of these heroic veterans are the most common examples of Indonesian nationalism. The increasingly old age of the veterans makes it necessary to carry out documentation of historical sources owned by these veterans in a memoir and write their experiences in a book. The Community Service Team of the History Study Program, University of Jambi, held an inventory, mentoring and writing of the history of veteran families in Jambi City. It is hoped that this activity can provide an example and raise nationalism among the young generation of Jambi today.

Abstract

Further research has been conducted on the role of the Indonesian National Army and the Indonesian laskar after the declaration of independence on 17 August 1945 and during the revolutionary period from 1945 to 1949. However, after decolonization in the 1950s, military history including the lives of its members and their personal lives received less space in the narrative of military history. Peace veteran is a title given specifically to young Indonesians who had participated as special forces under the auspices of the United Nations. These young men did not only come from the TNI but also from student regiments who had the opportunity to join this special peacekeeping force. The main focus of this article revolves around their efforts to guard the border between Egypt and ‘Israel’ during the war in the Middle East. This article will use oral sources and personal documents from various Indonesian peacekeeping forces who served during this period. The results of the study show that although they were faced with uncertain situations, far from their families, and preparing to face the enemy, there was another side to their experiences, namely, meeting colleagues from other countries, language gaps, and other “normal” activities that they were still able to carry out while on duty.

Abstract

The people of Kerinci have their own interpretation of the tiger. Tigers are considered sacred animals, with various meanings. However, on the other hand, tigers that attacked the people of Kerinci during the Dutch East Indies were still killed. This study aims to look at the relationship between the myths that developed and the attacks carried out by Sumatran tigers against people in Kerinci during the Dutch East Indies Government. With the approach of human and animal relations in the perspective of local traditions, this research analyzes the influence of local mythological narratives, the causes of tiger attacks on the community, and the steps taken to overcome these attacks. This research uses the historical method as a scalpel, with the flow of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. Data were collected from various historical sources, such as colonial archives, ethnographic records, as well as local oral traditions about tigers. The research findings show that tiger myths associated with spiritual symbols play an important role in shaping people's perceptions of the species. However, attacks by tigers caused by disturbed areas of their habitat led to a reaction by placing tigers as a threat to security and interfering with the exploitation of natural resources.

Abstract

Abstract

In the context of the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka), emphasis is placed on integrating elements of local wisdom into the learning process to support the development of student profiles aligned with Pancasila principles. Therefore, teachers are expected to prepare instructional materials that incorporate elements of local heritage in line with the Independent Curriculum. However, field observations, particularly in Kota Jambi, indicate that some schools, such as SMPN 17 Kota Jambi, still rely on teaching materials based on the previous curriculum, which do not incorporate local heritage or STEM aspects related to cultural sites. The purpose of this community service activity is to train teachers at SMPN 17 Kota Jambi to develop Independent Curriculum learning tools that integrate local wisdom and STEM aspects using the Muaro Jambi Temple archaeological site as a contextual learning source. Heyzine was utilized in this program to create interactive digital learning modules, enabling teachers to visually and contextually present the cultural significance of the Muaro Jambi Temple site. The method used in this activity is a workshop comprising three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. This training took place on August 29, 2024, at SMPN 17 Kota Jambi. The results of this training indicate that teachers at SMPN 17 Kota Jambi gained a solid understanding of the concepts, techniques, and use of Heyzine in preparing learning tools in line with the Independent Curriculum, thereby enabling more effective integration of local heritage and STEM aspects associated with the Muaro Jambi Temple into the learning process.
