Abstract

This study investigates the impact of key factors, Industrial Regional Gross Domestic Product (PDRB), population density, deforestation, and waste generation, on the Environmental Quality Index (IKLH) in Indonesia. The primary objective is to understand how these variables affect environmental quality across different regions. Using a panel data regression approach covering the years 2019-2023, this research employs various statistical tests, including Chow, Hausman, and Lagrange Multiplier tests, to know the appropriate model (FEM). The results indicate that PDRB sector industry and population density positively influence the IKLH, suggesting that industrial growth and effective population management can contribute to improved environmental quality. In contrast, deforestation negatively affects the IKLH, highlighting the detrimental impact of deforestation on ecosystem services such as carbon absorption and biodiversity. Although waste generation shows a positive effect, it is not statistically significant, indicating that waste management practices play a crucial role in mitigating environmental degradation. The study concludes that sustainable industrial development, effective population control, deforestation management, and robust waste management systems are key to enhancing Indonesia’s environmental quality.

Abstract

This study seeks to determine the primary economic sectors and assess their impact on regional development in Pesisir Barat Regency. Achieving sustainable regional growth necessitates the identification of strategic sectors capable of driving economic progress and enhancing the well-being of local communities. A descriptive quantitative method is employed in this research, utilizing the Location Quotient (LQ) technique to pinpoint basic sectors. Additionally, a sectoral typology analysis is conducted by examining the average LQ alongside the analysis focuses on the average contribution to the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), using GRDP data at constant 2010 prices for the period 2018 to 2022, obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS). The results reveal that the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries sector, along with the Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles sector, are classified as basic sectors and are situated in Quadrant I. As such, implementing targeted and sustainable development strategies is essential. These may include boosting investment, upgrading infrastructure, supporting local entrepreneurs, and improving human capital. The insights and recommendations from this research are intended to guide regional policymakers in crafting effective development strategies that leverage the region’s economic strengths.

Abstract

The cleanliness condition of Kunyit Beach, Bumi Waras sub-district, has recently become increasingly concerning, with a lot of litter scattered around and no one willing to clean it up. There is trash caught in the rocks along the beach, most of which is inorganic waste such as plastic, bottles, styrofoam, and other discarded items, as well as some organic waste like wood and leaves. This is caused by the lack of public awareness about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and the absence of government support, such as the lack of adequate waste disposal facilities and Environmental Cleanliness Operations Units. (SOKLI). Therefore, a care and protection action was carried out to address the issues arising in the Kunyit Beach area. Environmental care actions through beach cleaning activities are a concrete effort to preserve marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as to raise public awareness about the importance of a clean environment. This action was carried out by the local community who voluntarily assisted, as well as members of Group 1 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Economics course, to fulfill the assignment given by the course instructor, with permission from the Head of the Development Economics Department, the District Head of Bumi Waras, and the Village Head of Bumi Waras. Through this action, it is hoped that collective awareness will be created to maintain environmental cleanliness and the habit of not littering so that coastal areas can be sustainably preserved.

Abstract

One of the key challenges in economic development lies in balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. This study investigates the determinants of the Environmental Quality Index (EQI) across 34 provinces in Indonesia from 2020 to 2022 using an economic perspective. The EQI serves as a composite indicator reflecting environmental conditions based on three primary dimensions: air quality, water quality, and land cover. The independent variables in this analysis include the contribution of the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) from the agricultural and mining sectors, poverty levels, and the total area of forest cover. The study employs panel data regression using a Fixed Effect Model (FEM) approach. The findings reveal that the GRDP of the agricultural sector has a negative and significant influence on EQI, suggesting that unsustainable agricultural practices can degrade environmental quality. Similarly, the mining sector’s contribution exhibits a significantly negative relationship with EQI, underscoring the adverse environmental effects of resource extraction. Moreover, high poverty rates are associated with lower EQI values, indicating that limited infrastructure and low environmental awareness may hinder environmental preservation. In contrast, forest area demonstrates a positive and significant effect on EQI, emphasizing the vital role of natural ecosystems in supporting environmental health and sustainability.
