Abstract

The existence of side effects from drugs used for hair loss treatment urges the need for safer alternatives, especially from natural ingredients. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness and safety of hair tonic from Usada Bali (containing Polycias scutellaria, Hibiscus tiliaceus, Trigonella foenum graecum, and Cananga odorata) in mice. Experimental animals were divided into four groups: negative control was given a carrier fluid, positive control was given hair tonic on the market, and the treatment group was given hair tonic with simplicia concentration of 10% and 20%. Hair length was measured on days 7 and 21 with the treatment given daily topically on the backs of shaved mice. The irritation test was carried out at 24 and 48 hours. The data obtained were tested statistically by ANOVA test followed by Tukey's test with 95% confidence level. The results showed that the hair tonic formula contained alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and triterpenoids. The irritation test did not show any irritation on the skin of the mice. The hair growth activity test of the herbal hair tonic formula combination of Polycias scutellaria leaf, Hibiscus tiliaceus leaf, Trigonella foenum graecum seed and Cananga odorata flower showed significantly faster hair growth than the negative control at both concentrations and not significantly different from the positive control. This hair tonic formula has the potential to be developed into a natural hair growth agent without irritation to the skin.

Abstract

Cancer is a genetic disease in which cells are unable to control their functions normally. As cancer develops, old cells will survive when they should die, and new cells will grow when they are not needed. These extra cells can divide endlessly and can form growths called tumors . This research was carried out to know whether peristrophine, apioside, and pelargonidin 3-Sambubioside compounds could be developed as a drug in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) with the in silico method at the ROS1 receptor with the Protein Data Bank code 3ZBF with the native ligand crizotinib. Peristrophine, apioside, and pelargonidin 3-Sambubioside compounds have an affinity for ROS1 protein with binding energies of -6.12 kcal/mol on peristrophine, -6.74 kcal/mol on apioside, and -7.54 kcal/mol of pelargonidin 3-Sambubioside. Peristrophine, apioside, and pelargonidin 3-Sambubioside have a molecular mechanism in inhibiting ROS1 in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) through the formation of hydrogen bonds in the protein ROS1. From Lipinski's analysis, the peristrophine test compound has met the requirements and seen from the LD50 value of the peristrophine test compound, apioside and pelargonidin 3-Sambubioside has the same toxicity class as the comparison compound, namely crizotinib at class 4 toxicity.

Abstract

Dewandaru (Eugenia uniflora L.) is a medicinal plant that has been widely used in traditional medicine. Cigarettes are addictive substances that pose a significant threat to health and life sustainability. The principal toxic constituents of cigarettes are nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide (CO). Long-term smoking can increase the total leukocyte count, particularly the number of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) in the peripheral blood circulation, due to free radical generation and inflammatory reactions. Dewandaru fruit (Eugenia uniflora L.) contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that may inhibit leukocyte activation induced by oxidative stress associated with cigarette smoke exposure, thereby contributing to a reduction in the total leukocyte count. This study employed an experimental design with a posttest-only control group, using a sample of 30 male mice (Mus musculus) divided into three groups. Group I served as the negative control and received cigarette smoke exposure and distilled water. Groups II and III were designated as treatment groups and received 30 minutes of cigarette smoke exposure per day for 30 days, along with oral administration of n-butanol extract of dewandaru fruit at doses of 100 mg/kgBW and 200 mg/kgBW, respectively. On day 31, peripheral blood samples were collected from all subjects. The findings of this study indicate that administration of n-butanol extract of dewandaru fruit (Eugenia uniflora L.) resulted in a reduction in the total leukocyte count in male mice receiving the extract compared to the control group.

Abstract

Background: Eugenia uniflora L. (pitanga) is traditionally used in South America for gastrointestinal disorders. Although in vitro studies have highlighted its antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory properties, quantitative synthesis evaluating its potency and relative predominance remains limited. Objective: To systematically review and synthesize the evidence on the in vitro antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory effects of E. uniflora extracts, with a focus on digestive enzyme inhibition and implications for intestinal health. Methods: Studies published between 2015 and 2025 that evaluated the antioxidant activity of E. uniflora using DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS assays and its α-glucosidase inhibitory activity were analyzed. Data from secondary sources were evaluated using source triangulation to compare plant parts, extraction methods, phytochemical characteristics, and biological activities. Results: E. uniflora consistently exhibited potent α-glucosidase inhibitory activity across extraction methods, particularly in leaf extracts, making enzyme inhibition its most reproducible biological activity. In contrast, antioxidant activity showed greater variability depending on the assay used (DPPH, ABTS, or FRAP), plant organ, and solvent. Conclusion: E. uniflora demonstrates strong potential as a natural α-glucosidase inhibitor. This mechanism may delay carbohydrate digestion, improve postprandial glycemic regulation, and reduce intestinal oxidative stress and osmotic load. Although its antioxidant effects may provide complementary protection, these effects are more variable. Standardized phytochemical characterization, in vivo studies, and clinical trials are needed to confirm its therapeutic efficacy.
