Abstract

The mabuug-buugan tradition is a bhuta yadnya ceremony which is held in the Mangrove forest in Pakraman Kedonganan Village, South Kuta District, Badung Regency. This tradition is full of educational values ​​and plays a role in the process of social and cultural interaction among the community. In this tradition, based on devotional service carried out with lascayra, it will give positive power. Positive power will give a direction that is aimed at divine values, so that it leads to the glory of God. By pitting positive forces, which in a positive sense is not winning a victory. However, fighting for a decent life and always walking on the path of truth (dharma) and maintaining the natural state (Tri Hita Karana) of the mangrove forest of Pakraman Kedonganan Village. The dharma victory will reflect the joy and excitement of the community to welcome the new year. As for the meaning contained in the mabuug-buugan tradition; religious meaning, social meaning of society, meaning of education, and meaning of natural harmony.

Abstract

The study concentrates mainly on the various themes and rheme styles used in the introduction section of students' research proposals for the English study program at Mahasaraswati Denpasar. The study's objective is to look at the variety of themes and rhemes used in introduction paragraphs. The study used a qualitative method with a descriptive design to analyze the data. The information was taken from five research proposals from students who are studying English. Halliday's (1994, 2004) theory was applied to the data in order to analyze the theme and rheme. In five introduction sections of research proposals for English study programs, the most prevalent type appeared 36 times. In contrast, the introduction section of students' research proposals for English study programs contains five instances of the topical theme "participant." Abstract

English has distinctive characteristics that may differ from those of a student’s native language, and it is essential to grasp the differences. That is why it is crucial for students studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to understand the nuances of English pronunciation because a mispronunciation of a word may result in a lack of comprehension. The objective of this study is to identify the mispronunciation made by students in their pursuit of fluency in English. It employed a descriptive qualitative approach. In order to collect the data, the EFL students were required to read ten prepared English sentences, which had been selected according to the topic that they had been learning. In this study, Davies' theory was used as a reference, particularly in relation to English phonemes. The results demonstrated that there were pronunciation errors in six vowel sounds, three diphthongs, and six consonant sounds. When pronouncing a word in a sentence, EFL students tend to be influenced by their first language. Therefore, the acquisition of knowledge regarding the phonemic differences inherent to the English language will have a beneficial effect on the advancement of the language skills of students engaged in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) studies.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine and analyse the verbal and non-verbal signs within the movie poster of "Descendants." The aim is to extract verbal and non-verbal signs and the use of these indicators in conveying the movie's thematic content. The study employs a movie poster from "Descendants" obtained from Pinterest as its primary data source. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, applying the theory of semiotics proposed by Saussure in Chandler (2007), the second theory to analyze the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs proposed by Barthes (1977). Additionally, Cerrato's theory of color meaning (2012) is employed to supplement this analysis. Data collection process involved several sequential steps, including the selection and retrieval of the movie poster from Pinterest, followed by thorough examination and documentation. The result indicate the presence of a total of 10 signs, with 5 verbal and 5 non-verbal signs. The meanings associated with these signs are discerned through an explored of the accompanied textual and visual elements present on the poster. Notably, both verbal and non-verbal signs predominantly encompass connotative meanings. The utilization of actor portraits as part of the non-verbal signs across the movie posters to attract public attention by capitalized on the visual represented of the film's cast.
