Abstract

This study explores representative speech acts in the Wednesday Addams movie, analyzing their frequency, types, and functions. The primary goal of the research is to analyze how representative speech acts are used in character dialogue to conve beliefs, intentions, personalities, and to understand their contribution to narrative and character development. Employing Yule's (1996) classification and Leech's (1983) theory, the study identifies 25 instances of representative speech acts categorized into statements of fact, assertions, conclusions, and descriptions. Statements of fact were found to be the most frequent (32%), followed by descriptions (28%), assertions (20%), and conclusions (20%). These representative speech acts provide significant insights into the characters’ beliefs, intentions, and personalities, contributing to the narrative and character development of the film. The study also compares findings with previous research, indicating that while prior studies have focused on broader speech acts, this research narrows its focus to representative speech acts, offering a more detailed understanding of their role in character dialogue and storytelling. A qualitative descriptive method was applied by analyzing the dialogue in the Wednesday Addams script. This study explores how language is used in movies, especially in modern movie.

Abstract

This study analyzes the application of the Generosity and Approbation Maxims in the animated film Kung Fu Panda 4, based on Leech’s (1983) theory and Holmes’s (1992) framework on social factors influencing their use. Using a descriptive qualitative method, nine utterances from the main characters were analyzed through non-participant observation and note-taking. The findings reveal that both maxims are expressed through self-sacrifice, offering help, and praising others, which strengthen interpersonal relationships, demonstrate solidarity, and reflect each character’s personality. The study highlights the crucial role of politeness in maintaining positive communication within animated films.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to identify and analyze the types of assertive speech acts, one of the five major categories of illocutionary acts proposed by Searle (1985), found in the movie “Zootopia” (2016). By applying Searle’s theory of illocutionary acts, this research examines the various types of assertive speech acts used by the characters and how these acts contribute to the development of the narrative and characters. The data were collected from character dialogues and analyzed through a qualitative method to identify emerging patterns. Assertive (or representative) speech acts were found to be the most frequent. This study focuses on classifying the types of assertive illocutionary acts used in the movie and interpreting their meanings within context. Searle and Vanderveken’s (1985) classification framework was employed to categorize 40 instances of assertive speech acts into five types: assert, claim, affirm, inform, and deny. A qualitative method was used for descriptive analysis, while a quantitative method was also utilized to determine the frequency of each type. Affirm was found to be the most frequent (27.5%), followed by assert (22.5%), claim (20%), inform (17.5%), and deny (12.5%). Keywords: illocutionary acts, assertive, Zootopia movie, Searle's theory, conversation, communication, character.
