Abstract

This study examines the role of security officers in preventing violence at the Sukadana Class IIB State Detention Center. The overcrowding of inmates at the Sukadana Detention Center poses a higher security risk, including violence among inmates. The study aims to identify the role of security officers in preventing violence and to reveal the challenges they face in carrying out their duties. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through observations, interviews with correctional officers, and relevant documentation. Role theory by Biddle and Thomas was used as a framework to analyze expectations, norms, performance, and evaluations of the officers' role in maintaining security. The findings show that officers play a central role in preventing violence, although they face several challenges, such as the limited number of personnel, which is insufficient compared to the number of inmates. Preventive measures include regular patrols, monitoring inmate interactions, and supervising items brought by visitors. In conclusion, security effectiveness needs to be improved by increasing personnel and enhancing the facilities at the detention center. Abstract

The social structure, formed from both formal and informal interactions between inmates and officers, plays a crucial role in maintaining stability within prison environments. This article aims to analyze the existing social structure in Lapas (Correctional Facility) Class IIA Mataram and its influence on security and order within the facility. Using a qualitative approach, the study maps out the factors that shape the social hierarchy in the prison and how these social dynamics can be utilized to improve security conditions. The findings reveal that alongside formal regulations, unwritten social norms also significantly influence order within the prison. The combination of strict formal rules and the individual agency of inmates contributes to the reproduction of the existing social structure. Abstract

The Indonesian government is currently intensively promoting the national food security program, where correctional institutions (Lapas) play a strategic role through inmate self-reliance development programs. This study aims to analyze the implementation of collaborative governance in agricultural self-reliance programs at the Class IIA Bangli Narcotics Prison to support food security efforts. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that collaboration between the prison, vendors, and inmates is relatively effective, although challenges remain, such as suboptimal coordination and limited resources. The collaboration has had a positive impact on improving inmates’ skills, increasing land productivity, and contributing to food supply. The study recommends strengthening synergy among stakeholders and enhancing support from the government and private sector to improve the development system and ensure the success of food security programs within correctional facilities.

Abstract

The fulfillment of educational rights for children in the Special Child Development Institution (LPKA) is crucial to ensure their future success despite legal conflicts. This research, focusing on the implementation of educational rights for juvenile inmates at LPKA Class I Blitar, explores the policies, curriculum, facilities, and obstacles in the process. Conducted using a qualitative explanatory method, the research includes observations and interviews with six informants, including three juvenile inmates, two LPKA staff members, and one teacher. The results reveal that, although the LPKA provides formal education (elementary to high school levels), it faces challenges such as limited resources, inadequate facilities, and the lack of motivation among juvenile inmates. Additionally, the short duration of sentences further complicates continuous education. LPKA collaborates with educational institutions, but budget constraints, incomplete administrative requirements, and inadequate teaching staff hinder optimal learning outcomes. Recommendations include better budget planning, more support for incomplete documentation, and motivational programs for both educators and students to enhance learning participation and success.

Abstract

Inside correctional institutions, drug inmates face not only the challenge of confinement but also the struggle to control their emotions and overcome the inner chaos caused by addiction. Each group of inmates, whether addicts, dealers, or users, shows unique emotional characteristics that require a specific and targeted approach in their rehabilitation process. This study aims to explore effective emotion regulation techniques to address different patterns of mood disorders among drug inmates at the Class IIA Pematang Siantar Narcotics Correctional Institution. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and analysis of personality development program documents. The results showed that addicts experienced intense emotional fluctuations, dealers tended to display aggressive and manipulative behaviors, while users often suffered from depression and anxiety. The integration of emotion regulation techniques based on the model of James J. Gross into personality development programs proved effective in improving emotional stability and reducing symptoms of mood disorders. The study highlights that well-structured emotional regulation interventions can significantly enhance rehabilitation outcomes and lower the possibility of relapse among narcotics inmates, creating a more humane and sustainable correctional environment.
