Abstract

Tourism development, when unplanned, it can exert a range of socio-economic impacts, primarily stemming from the divergence in cultural perspectives between tourists and local residents. This research delves into the consequences of tourism development on the socio-economic fabric of the Baikolet beach community and strives to identify the key drivers behind these impacts. This research emplyed descriptive qualitative method, it employed purposive sampling to select informants, and gathered data through a combination of observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis encompassed data reduction, presentation, verification, and the formulation of data-driven conclusions. This research reveals that tourism development carries both positive and negative repercussions for the community. On the positive side, it contributes to increased public awareness, fosters social interaction, generates employment opportunities, and augments community income. However, there are also negative outcomes, such as social transformations that influence and erode local culture, as well as environmental pollution. These impacts are attributed to several factors, including the community's aspiration to enhance their economic well-being, the resultant social and cultural shifts, and the level of awareness among both tourists and local residents.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze how maritime habitus shapes the learning ethos of Bajo youth in Kawite-Wite Village, Muna Islands, Southeast Sulawesi, by addressing a research gap in coastal education studies that have largely emphasized access, participation, and dropout, while paying limited attention to maritime culture as both educational capital and structural challenge. Methods: This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach within a critical sociology of education paradigm using a phenomenological-sociological design. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and documentation involving 24 informants, consisting of 16 Bajo youth aged 13-18 years and 8 supporting informants, including teachers, a school principal, fishermen parents, a senior fisherman, a Bajo community figure, and a local education observer. Data were analyzed interactively through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Findings: The findings reveal three central patterns. First, maritime habitus functions as cultural capital through hard work, resilience, solidarity, responsibility, independence, and collective discipline. Second, it produces educational tension through seasonal absenteeism, fatigue, family labor demands, and the risk of school dropout. Third, Bajo youth construct a hybrid future orientation by negotiating their roles as students and children of fishing families. Research Implications: The study implies that coastal education should be culturally responsive, flexible, and connected to maritime life. Originality: This study advances the concept of maritime habitus as an analytical lens for understanding learning ethos as a negotiation between the school field and the sea field.

Abstract

Early marriage remains a persistent social issue in coastal areas of Indonesia, including Tapi-Tapi Village, Muna Islands, where the Bajo community constitutes a significant social group. This phenomenon is not merely driven by limited access to education or the absence of succe ssful role models, but is more strongly influenced by free social interacti on among adolescents, weak self-control, and short-term thinking in interpreting intimate relationships and future life planning. This communi ty service program aimed to enhance adolescents’ psychological understa nding of the risks of early marriage, provide mental health education related to stress, anxiety, and depression, and develop adolescents’ personal skills to better prepare them for future life challenges. The program was implemented through psychosocial counseling, participat ory discussions, and community-based mentoring involving adolescents, parents, and local leaders. The results indicate an increase in adolesce nts’ critical awareness of the psychological and social consequences of early marriage, shifts in perceptions of the body and intimate relationsh ips, & strengthened reflective capacity in decision-making. Program underscores that preventing early marriage requires a non-repressive approach prioritizes psychosocial readiness & the strengthening of adole scent agency, rather than relying solely on normative/ moralistic control.

Abstract

Students' low learning interest at SMP Negeri 2 Baubau is not solely associated with individual motivation but is also influenced by the weak internalization of academic cultural capital, as reflected in limited literacy practices, low classroom participation, and minimal student engagement in the learning process. This community service program aimed to enhance students' learning interest through strengthening school culture based on the internalization of cultural capital. The program employed a participatory approach consisting of preliminary observation, coordination with the school, and the implementation of three main intervention activities: contextual literacy development, the establishment of learning habits through discussions, presentations, and reflective learning, and the reinforcement of academic culture by promoting dialogic pedagogical relationships and recognizing students' active participation. The program outcomes indicated increased student engagement in classroom activities, improved reading and discussion habits, greater confidence in expressing ideas, and the creation of a more participatory learning environment. These findings demonstrate that strengthening cultural capital through sustained academic practices and supportive school culture can serve as an effective strategy for fostering students' learning interest
