Abstract

The ideal body image displayed in social media often makes women vulnerable to body image issues, one of which is body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). This study aims to examine the role of social media pressure in predicting the tendency towards such a disorder in emerging adult women, with each of the three dimensions of perfectionism as a mediator. The participants were 385 women aged 18-25 years who used social media and were selected using the convenience sampling technique. Data were collected using the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Screening Scale, Social Media Pressure Scale, Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R), and some open-ended questions distributed online through various social media. The BDD tendency model tested using structural equation modeling has a good fit with the data (χ2/df = .019, RMSEA = .001, CFI = 1.00) and shows that the role of social media pressure in women's BDD tendency was fully mediated through the discrepancy dimension of perfectionism. The findings indicate that a program is needed to develop media literacy and promote positive body images for women who use social media to prevent body image issues.

Abstract

Emerging adulthood is a transitional period from adolescence to adulthood characterized by instability in roles and relationships as individuals navigate the demands of higher education, employment, intimate relationships, and self-identity formation. This transition often triggers various negative emotions, such as anxiety, distress, and self-doubt, particularly in women, making them more susceptible to engaging in emotional eating as a means of seeking temporary comfort or distraction. Emotional eating is a mechanism for temporary emotional relief, but feelings of regret or guilt often follow it. Emotion regulation skills are crucial when experiencing negative emotions. This study aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an intervention designed to enhance emotion regulation skills, in reducing the occurrence of emotional eating among emerging adult women. The study employed a single case experiment design with two 21-year-old female participants experiencing emotional eating. The Emotional Eating Scale (EES) and emotional eating self-recording were used as measurement tools. Each participant received DBT over 7 sessions, each lasting 60-90 minutes. The results indicated that DBT reduced the frequency of emotional eating in both participants, with the effect persisting up to 14 days post-intervention. These findings suggest that DBT is an effective intervention for reducing emotional eating in emerging adult women.

Abstract

This study examined the role of emotional and social loneliness in the fear of missing out (FoMO) among adolescent TikTok users in East Java. With the increasing use of social media among teenagers, FoMO has become a common issue linked to anxiety and discomfort over missing online interactions. A total of 205 adolescents aged 13–18 participated through a survey, using the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOS) and the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (DJGLS), analyzed with linear regression. The research findings revealed that emotional and social loneliness significantly predicted increased FoMO. The novelty of this study lies in exploring the role of two dimensions of loneliness on FoMO in Indonesian adolescents. These results highlight the importance of interventions to reduce loneliness, such as strengthening peer relationships and promoting healthier social media use. Practically, the findings suggest that schools or parents should foster supportive environments and encourage balanced online–offline interactions to help mitigate FoMO and protect adolescents’ mental well-being.

Abstract

This study is a bibliometric analysis with the aim to explore scientific publications related to the psychological well-being of women in the perimenopause transition phase. The analyzed data was sourced from scientific articles indexed by Scopus from 1985 to October 2023. Scientific article search technique was conducted by tracking scientific publication documents in a database through search queries with search string. Analysis results provided four main findings: (1) psychology is not the only scientific discipline that studies issues related to the menopausal transition phase and not the field of study that produces the highest number of scientific publications; (2) publications related to the menopausal transition phase with the highest level of influence in the discipline of psychology are dominated by mental health topics such as depression and sleep disorders; (3) academic interest in studying the menopausal transition phase in psychology is increasing with each publication period; and (4) a diversity of study topics has emerged as interest in studying the menopausal transition phase has increased; however, in the last twenty years, there has been a trend towards stagnation of studies on the topic of perimenopausal depression and decrease of research interest in various dimensions of psychological well-being. The conclusion of this study is that bibliometric metadata of a scientific publication corpus is dynamic, causing metrics to change with time, and that analysis can be utilized to see trends in scientific publications related to the issue of women's physical and psychological health in the menopausal transition phase.

Abstract

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a psychological disorder which can be suffered by many people in general, but often difficult to diagnose. The disorder occurs due to the inaccurate belief associated with the physical appearance. Therapy is necessary because people with BDD experience complex and life-disturbing distress. Sometimes it even leads to depression, social isolation, or suicidal tendency. Hypnotherapy is a therapy that works and performs on the individual’s subconscious mind, where belief is stored. This study aimed to understand whether hypnotherapy could reduce BDD experienced by an adolescent girl. It was a single-case study because it used only one subject. Subject was a 19-year-old adolescent girl who experienced BDD. The techniques used to replace the inaccurate belief were parts therapy, age regression therapy, and hypno-EFT. Results from this study showed that hypnotherapy was effective for reducing BDD in an adolescent girl.

Abstract

Body image dissatisfaction, caused by a discrepancy between cultural-based ideal body and individual actual body, is experienced by most of adolescent girls. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of bibliotherapy on adolescent girls with body image dissatisfaction. Subjects were 15 senior high school girls, aged 14-17 years, with BMI (Body Mass Index) thin to normal, with average to high body image dissatisfaction. By using pretest-posttest control group design, the subjects were assigned into three groups, i.e. interactive and reading bibliotherapy as experimental groups and the waiting-list control group. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) is employed to measure the differences of body dissatisfaction among the three groups. The result showed that there were no significant differences of body dissatisfaction in the pretest – posttest and posttest – follow-up, between the three groups. It means that neither interactive nor reading bibliotherapy was effective in reducing the adolescent girls’ body image dissatisfaction.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of bibliotherapy in reducing body im- age dissatisfaction among high school girls. Participants were 45 girls from three different high schools, whose BMI were normal (18.5 – 22.9) and experienced moderate to very high body image dissatisfaction. Using pretest – posttest control group design, participants from each high school were assigned to one of three conditions: interactive or reading bibliotherapy as experimental conditions or as waiting-list control group. Body image dissatisfaction of each participant was measured at pre- treatment, post-treatment, and 1-month follow-up and analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and General Linear Model – Univariate. The result of this study showed that either interactive (sig.= 0.000 < 0.05) or reading bibliotherapy (sig.= 0.012 < 0.05) was effective in reducing body image dissatisfaction among high school girls and their effectiveness were maintained until 1-month follow-up.
