AbstractMost women have a concern toward their physical appearance. Therefore, they often compare their physical appearance, especially their body shape, with other women’s body shapes which are more attractive. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between social comparison and body dissatisfaction among early adult women. Social comparison is the process of comparing oneself with others, whereas body dissatisfaction is the negative individual’s feelings, thoughts, and evaluation toward her body shape. Social comparison and body dissatisfaction were measured using Body Comparison Scale (BCS) and Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ). The participants were 104 female students of Faculty of Psychology, University of Surabaya aged 18-25 years old. The result showed that social comparison was positively correlated with body dissatisfaction among early adult women (r= .636, p< .05). It means that the early adult women are more prone to experience higher bodydissatisfaction if they more often compare their body shapes with more attractive women. Keywords: body dissatisfaction, early adult women, social comparison

Abstract

Mothers usually expect their children to grow well and healthy. Therefore, having an autistic child is a very difficult experience as this may make mothers feel frustrated and sad. Continuous negative feelings could make the mothers feel depressed. This study aims to examine the correlation between emotional intelligence and depression on mothers with an autistic child. Twenty-six mothers (27) with an autistic child below 12 years old participated in the study by filling in the questionnaires of emotional intelligence and depression. Date were then analyzed statistically by using the Product Moment Correlation Test. Findings showed that there was a significant negative correlation between emotional intelligence and depression (r=-0.571, p < 0.05) The findings suggest that the higher the emotional intelligence a mother has, the lower the depression level she experiences. Findings also show the indication of association between work status and depression on mothers with an autistic child. The implications of the findings are explored further. Key words            :    autism, emotional intelligence, depression

Abstract

Currently, K-pop girl groups are some of the favorite celebrities who often become the ideal standard for young girls. K-pop girl figures are often displayed with ideal body standards, such as having a slim body, white skin, thin face, and high nose, thus making fans adore and want to have a physical appearance like their idol. This study aimed to examine the relationship between celebrity worship and body image among female adolescents who idolized K-pop girl groups. A sample of 414 female adolescents aged 18-22 years participated online in the current study by filling in the Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS) and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relation Questionnaire-Appearance Scale (MBSRQ-AS). Results showed that the entertainment-social aspect of celebrity worship proved a significant positive correlation with the appearance orientation dimension of body image. In contrast, the borderline-pathological aspect had a significant negative correlation with the body areas satisfaction dimension. Nonetheless, the intense personal aspect of celebrity worship did not correlate significantly with all dimensions of body image among young girls fans of K-pop girl groups. Thus, each level of celebrity worship correlates differently with each dimension of body image. Entertainment-social is the most common celebrity worship among adolescent girls fans of K-pop girl groups and affects young girls' body image by increasing their attention to appearance.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia has forced college students to undergo online learning. Various problems that arise due to this pandemic, especially those related to academic achievement, can disrupt the students' psychological well-being. This study investigated coping strategies' role in predicting college students' psychological well-being during the pandemic's first wave. Two hundred eleven students participated online in this quantitative study and completed the shortened version of the Psychological Well-Being Scale and the Brief Cope Inventory. The regression analysis results show that problem-focused coping strategies, such as planning and the use of instrumental support, significantly predict the increase in female students' psychological well-being. In contrast, only active coping positively predicts psychological well-being in male students. Dysfunctional coping strategies, such as behavioral disengagement and denial, significantly predict the decline in female students' psychological well-being. On the other hand, venting showed a significant role in predicting the increased psychological well-being of female students. Emotion-focused coping strategies do not significantly predict psychological well-being in female and male students. Therefore, regarding the psychological well-being of college students during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, coping strategies, especially problem-focused and dysfunctional strategies, contribute differently to female and male students.

Abstract

Adult male appreciation of his body can affect sexual satisfaction. In addition, boredom caused by a lack of variety in sexual relations can also have an impact on sexual satisfaction in marriage. The aim of this study was to examine the role of body appreciation in predicting increased sexual satisfaction, either directly or indirectly through the mediation of sexual boredom, in early and middle-aged married men. Data were collected from a total of 382 participants (mean age 38 years) using a cross-sectional survey method with convenience sampling. Participants completed the extended satisfaction with life scale (ESWLS), body appreciation scale-2 (BAS-2), and sexual boredom scale (SBS). The results showed that sexual boredom partially mediated the indirect role of body appreciation in predicting sexual satisfaction (B=0.159; z=4.383; sig.=0.001<0.05) because body appreciation can also directly predict increased sexual satisfaction (B=0.814, t=11.418; sig.=0.001<0.05). This result indicates that body appreciation as an internal factor plays a greater role in predicting high sexual satisfaction in early and middle adulthood men.
