Abstract

The effect of reduction of maize as starch source on flow rate of pellet in continuous production processABSTRACT. This experience was conducted to determine effect of reduction of maize as starch source on flow rate of pellet in continuous production process. Design of the experiment used was a completely randomized design with 3 treatments and 3 replicates. The data is analyzed by using of ANOVA and if there is a significance among treatments would tested using by contrast orthogonal. The variables observed were angle of repose, loose bulk density, compacted bulk density, and flow rate. The results showed that the reduction of maize as starch source did not give the significant effect on the variable that observed. The analyzed angle of repose showed variation 24.200 to 25.690, loose bulk density showed variation 621.6kg/m3 to 658kg/m3, compacted bulk density showed variation 668.3kg/m3 to 676.8kg/m3, and flow rate showed variation 449.69kg/minute to 491.41kg/minute. Based on the result that the reduction of maize as starch source (corn, sorghum, menir) did not give the significant effect on flow rate of pellet and the pellet treatment with menir has the fastest pellet production time so flowability pellet from pelleter to material hadling (bucket elevator) machine is faster. As higher the values of flow rate, so the time of material movement from bin to the package is shorter.

Abstract

Margamulya Village is a center for producing green coffee beans that faces problems in managing coffee husk waste from coffee grinding. On the other hand, many residents have livestock businesses, so coffee husk waste has the potential to become alternative feed for ruminants, especially goats and sheep. This community service program aims to improve farmers' knowledge and skills in utilizing coffee husks as an alternative feed ingredient. The activities were carried out in several stages, namely observation, socialization and discussion, identification of coffee husks, processing training, feed administration assistance, and evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests. The program was attended by 40 farmers from the Raharja livestock group in Ciwidey, Bandung, West Java. The results of the activities showed a positive impact in the form of a 30% reduction in coffee husk waste used as livestock feed mixture, as well as an increase in the availability and quality of livestock feed. The main obstacle in the implementation was the limited tools and space for drying coffee husks. As a follow-up, this program encourages the continuity of feed processing from upstream to downstream. This initiative is a concrete step in creating sustainable feed based on local materials that were previously not optimally utilized. The series of community service activities that have been carried out have increased farmers' knowledge regarding the use of coffee husk waste as an alternative feed material and produced alternative feed based on coffee husk waste.
