Abstract

The purpose of the study is to explain Max’s personality before going on a spiritual journey and how it is after being influenced by the spiritual journey in Karan Bajaj’s the Yoga of Max’s Discontent. The main character, Max, changes from having no purpose in life to being a person who achieves his goals and finds meaning after taking a spiritual journey. The kind of change in life’s purpose draws the researcher’s interest to conduct the analysis in this article since human’s thought develops from time to time whose developments could do the person either harm or good. However, this personality change does the main character good. Using social and emotional determinant and close reading method, the researcher conducts a deep observation about the main character’s personality and finds its change from emotional, indecisive, suffering, and traumatic before doing a spiritual journey to calm, decisive, happy and peacefull, and well-being after doing a spiritual journey. Thus, two of the eights determinant give a significant change of way of life of the main character, therefore, such determinants are worth studying very deeply as such knowledge is very necessary to make people able to manage available determinants they encounter in their daily life.

Abstract

Examination of the interleukin 6 (IL-6) and procalcitonin levels, and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) might could help to diagnosis and predict the duration of therapy and prognosis of pneumonia cases. Zingiber officinale var rubrum could be used as an adjunct therapy in infectious diseases as it has anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of study was to assess the effect of Z. officinale on levels of IL-6 dan procalcitonin, NLR, and the length of hospitalization of patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). An open-label clinical trial was conducted among CAP cases regardless of the etiology at Dr Moewardi Hospital and Universitas Sebelas Maret Hospital, Surakarta, Indonesia from July to September 2022. A total of 30 inpatient CAP cases were recruited and were randomly divided into two groups: (1) received Z. officinale capsule 300 mg daily for five days in addition to CAP standard therapy; and (2) received CAP standard therapy only, as control group. The data were compared using a paired Student t-test, Chi-squared test, Mann-Whitney test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test as appropriate. In Z. officinale group, the mean difference between post- and pre-treatment as follow: IL-6 level was 9.93 pg/mL, procalcitonin level -471.31 ng/mL, and NLR value -4.01. In control group, the difference was 18.94 pg/mL for IL-6, 339.39 ng/mL for procalcitonin, and 1.56 for NLR. The change of IL-6 was not statistically significant between treatment and control groups with p=0.917. The changes of procalcitonin level and NLR were significant between treatment and control group with p=0.024 and p=0.007, respectively, of which the treatment had better improvement. In addition, our data indicated that the length of stay was not statistically significant between the treatment and control groups (4.13 vs 4.47 days, p=0.361). In conclusion, Z. officinale could reduce serum inflammatory markers such as procalcitonin and NLR but it has little impact in reducing IL-16 level and the length of hospitalization of CAP patients.

Abstract

Background: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a respiratory infectious disease caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Procalcitonin (PCT) levels will rise, especially in bacterial infection. PCT examination in CAP can help to confirm the diagnosis and anticipate complications. CAP is diagnosed by symptoms, vital signs, laboratory tests, and radiographic investigations. Inflammatory biomarkers are required for predicting causative microorganisms, guiding antibiotic therapy, and determining severity. The purpose of this study is to compare NLR, WBC, and TNF-α levels in CAP patients dependent on PCT level. Methods: This was an analytical cross-sectional study involving 43 CAP patients admitted to Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Hospital and Moewardi Regional General Hospital Surakarta between February and March 2023. Patients were separated into two groups based on PCT levels: those with levels ≤0.12 ng/mL and >0.12 ng/mL. All patients provided a blood sample for NLR, WBC, TNF-α, and PCT testing. The independent t-test and Mann-Whitney tests were performed for statistical analysis of two unpaired groups, and the Chi-square or Fisher exact test was utilized for ordinal categorical data. If the value of P<0.05, the result is statistically significant. Results: NLR and TNF-α levels were higher in the PCT group >0.12 ng/mL and statistically significant with a value of P=0.001. WBC levels in the PCT group >0.12 ng/mL were higher, but the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.096).Conclusion: The NLR value, WBC, and TNF-α levels were found to be higher in the group with PCT >0.12 ng/mL.

Abstract

This study is comparing women’s betrayal in two novels, Wild Swans a novel by Jung Chang and the Patience Stone a novel by Atiq Rahimi. The fact that Chinese’ women and Afghan women’s share the common issue, that is patriarchal one, the former faces the superior communist party, whilst, the latter faces the Mullah, the influential spiritual leader. Then, the women’s betrayal is worthy of analysis. The word ‘betrayal’ turns out to have a positive connotation instead of a negative one as heard in everyday life. Using descriptive and dramatic method, the study finds that both women in both novels have similarities and differences in their betrayal seen from the way they speak as well as act. In the similarities, both women betray the powerful people and their husbands, whilst, the differences are that people in power refer to the political parties in Wild Swans, a novel by Jung Chang, to the Mullah, a religious leader in the Patience Stone, a novel by Atiq Rahimi besides the husband is loyal to the political party in Wild Swans and to the religious teaching in the Patience Stone. Eventually, comparing women’s betrayal is worth a study since their betrayal gives a new life concept that women should play important roles in society not just men.

Abstract

This study is about a social class that plays a very important role in the life and death of the main character in Thomas Hardy’s the Mayor of Casterbridge. It is called to have an important role as it triggers the character to survive though eventually; he must die for it. Using the capitalist mode of production and descriptive and dramatic approach to picture the social class in the society as well as the effect of it, the study shows that the main character’s life is triggered by the social class in the society, that is, wealth possession. The more property a man gets the more respects he gets from the society. On the contrary, the less property he gets the less respects he gets. It, then, becomes the main issue of the people in the novel to behave according to the social class driving the main character to the downfall. Finally, although the study has the novelty since no previous studies use the same theory as the researcher’s study, the study gives the readers moral lesson that sometimes in a society, wealth is worth more whilst in another society is not. Besides, this novelty is to develop the study of literature.
