Abstract

The discourse on gender equality in society is growing. Although the participation of women working in the public sector is increasing, the roles of husband and wife are still divided sexually. Domestic work and child care are still the primary responsibilities of women. This study examines gender inequality and the rationalization of the work division in young couples’ households in urban communities. This study uses a qualitative method. This study uses the theory of doing gender and symbolic interactionism. This study found that families with an unequal division of domestic work made rationalization of gender inequality within the family. Various excuses were given to disguise the unequal division of domestic work between husband and wife. This happens because of the patriarchal ideology in Javanese society. The wife was given more responsibility for domestic work and child care than the husband. In traditional families, inequality in the division of domestic work is rationalized for the following reasons, namely gender, standards, and time. In transitional families, inequality in domestic work is rationalized through gender, standards, skills, time, religion, and avoiding conflict. In an egalitarian family, family members do domestic work based on their responsibilities and initiatives. The actors who perpetuate gender inequality in young families are husbands, husbands and wives, and extended family members. This study concludes that gender roles in young couples’ households are still traditional and perpetuated through rationalizing gender inequality in domestic work and childcare allocation. Keywords : Domestic Works, Family, Gender Equality, Gender Injustice, Women

Abstract

The number of cases of domestic violence against women and children in Indonesia has escalated year by year. Various studies have revealed the impact of family violence on children, but few have sought to investigate the sociological lives of youth who have been exposed to domestic violence since childhood. This study aimed to reveal the experiences of educated youth who are exposed to domestic violence and its impact on them. This study used a qualitative method. The research informants were educated youth who had been victims of domestic violence and were currently students in the university. The results showed that children who were victims of exposure to violence had bad experiences throughout their lives. They recorded domestic violence from childhood to growing up. They believe that parents and families are parties that are unable to provide protection. In addition, exposure to violence also causes mental health disorders, poor psychological conditions, and thoughts of refusing to marry. This study concludes that exposure to domestic violence has a serious impact on children’s social development because from childhood to adulthood they grow up in a violence zone.

Abstract

Javanese still adheres to a patriarchal culture and has the concept of family harmony so that prenuptial agreements are considered as a form of unethical openness that demonstrates a lack of trust in their partners. This study focuses on the meaning of prenuptial agreements and the power relations between husband and wife who enter into prenuptial agreements. This study employed a qualitative research method by conducting in-depth interviews with men and women who made prenuptial agreements. The theory used was phenomenology. This study revealed that prenuptial agreement was defined by various experiences, situations, and personalities of the couple. A prenuptial agreement is not intended to be used to plan a divorce. Pre-nuptial agreement users want a marriage that has protection and freedom. The upper class interprets a prenuptial agreement as a means of protecting property and assets owned, avoiding losses caused by a spouse, and making it easier to run a business. Meanwhile, the middle class interprets prenuptial agreements as a means of self-protection that leads to a guarantee of personal safety over shared assets and other obligations to children fairly in the event of a household conflict. The power relations between husband and wife who enter into prenuptial agreements demonstrate various forms, including: 1) sexist power, 2) female domination, and 3) an equal relationship. This study concludes that Javanese who enters into prenuptial agreements uphold the concept of living in harmony but reject the concept of “surrendering”. Prenuptial agreements are used as: 1) a means of self-protection with security guarantees; the anticipation of the uncertainty of what will happen in the future or the unpredictable in the marriage; and 3) freedom that comes from experience and awareness. Abstract

This research is an attempt to see the other side of Islamic religious education. Previously, research was always emphasized on examining patterns, systems, or a series of learning and teaching mechanisms in an orderly and steady form. Therefore, a system of discipline and obedience is needed for students who are targeted as objects of that order. The other side of this research lies in an in-depth examination of compliance, not only aiming from a psychological perspective but at revealing the hidden meanings behind the actors who want the obedience attitude of students to occur. The goal is clear to photograph the obedience behavior of students based on the concepts that already exist in the agreed pattern and system of religious education. This study uses a qualitative approach by analyzing critically the teacher's understandings that have occurred so far. In the initial observations, it is not clear how the question of student compliance is sociologically constructed, although it is widely known that the question of compliance is the psychological formation of students for the sake of ease of learning. In the end, the researcher found out that not all compliance was interpreted the same by everyone. They will interpret obedience according to the context of the times. There are those who say that obedience is not always subject to submission, there are those who assume that obedience can be understood from only one side, namely those who govern and so on.

Abstract

The COVID-19 outbreak has brought multiple profound effects on the economic sector worldwide. This study aims to determine the socio-economic impact caused by the COVID-19. Considering Indonesian lower-classes, this study used a quantitative method with a descriptive approach and collected 274 respondents. Data were obtained from questionnaire interviews with poor women in rural East Java. The data source was selected using a random sampling technique. Literature studies were carried out to collect data related to research. The results show that the pandemic in Indonesia has caused a tremendous impact on the socio-economic sector of society and women from the lower classes in rural areas. They suffer from huge losses ranging from reduced income to loss of work. This study also highlights the Work From Home (WFH) policy, which cannot be implemented on the lower classes because many of them are laid off, and some employees who continue to work are at risk of disease exposure. Likewise, the COVID-19 pandemic and Work From Home (WFH) policy evoke several problems for women. The household responsibility of women is proven to increase during the pandemic. The women who do WFH seem to be preoccupied in two roles, first, as a worker, second, as a housewife who assists the household. Specifically, it means women are required to do domestic and public work. Therefore, gender awareness is needed to minimize women’s disadvantages in this case.

Abstract

Sexual violence during dating is a serious issue. The increased sexual violence during dating demonstrates that this phenomenon is becoming increasingly dangerous. This study investigates the gender relationship between perpetrators and victims of sexual violence during dating among university students. This study employed a mixed method. This study included 404 male and female students who had experienced sexual violence as respondents. This study discovered various types of sexual violence that occurred in the context of a loving relationship pattern. The perpetrators tend to control and manipulate the victim, making them want to do whatever they want. The victim loved the perpetrator excessively and was forced to serve the perpetrator’s sexual desires as a form of attention and love for the partner, even though the victim was undergoing psychological treatment. Love is transformed into a “desire to have,” causing the individual to lose himself. The subject has become an object as a result of the dating relationship. The perpetrator was repeatedly abused and was very possessive of their partner. The perpetrator did not consider their partner as a subject but rather as an object for negative emotions that significantly impacted the victim. Repeated sexual violence indicates a dating relationship that leads to a controlling relationship. This occurs because the perpetrator’s hegemony over the victim is carried out persuasively by convincing the victim to approve of the perpetrator’s actions.
