Abstract

MAHYUNI, R., CHIKMAWATI, T., ARIYANTI, N. S. & KUSUMAWATY, A. 2022. A new variety of Canthiumera glabra (Rubiaceae: Vanguerieae). Reinwardtia 21(1): 13‒17. — Canthiumera glabra var. laxiflora (Rubiaceae: Vanguerieae), a new variety from Java and Sumatra is described. The new variety differs from the typical variety in having laxly branched inflorescences and is restricted to south Sumatra (Lampung) and southwestern Java.

Abstract

DEWI, A. P., ARIYANTI N. S. & WALUJO, E. B. 2016. Diversity of plants used for plaited crafts by the Dayak Iban-Désa in Kabupaten Sintang, Kalimantan Barat. Reinwardtia 15(2): 67 – 79. — Many plants are used for making plaited crafts such as basketry and woven mats by the Dayak Iban-Désa, a sub-tribe of the Dayak in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. The Dayak Iban-Désa gather the craft materials mostly from the plants in the forest. However, the habitats of these plants are being threatened by deforestation. The diversity of plants used for crafts is here documented. This study recorded the scientific names of plant species used for the craft plaiting, and observed abundance of plants used for craft. Information about the plants used were gathered using non-structural interview and focus group discussion (FGD) with the informants and participants. The abundance of plaited plants was observed in 46 plots of 10 × 10 m2 plots by participative ecological method. Nineteen plants species were used as plaited material, belonging to four families: Arecaceae, Poaceae, Pandanaceae and Zingiberaceae. Two species of rattan (Calamus sp. and Plectocomiopsis wrayi Becc.) have the highest Index Cultural Significance (ICS) value. Those species were considered as the most valuable plant materials because of the quality of fiber, intensity on harvesting, and the resulting quality of plaited craft products. However, the demand for high quality products is not always supported by the availability of plant materials in the forest. Therefore, the cultural significance of plants (the ICS values) and their availability should be considered when determining the conservation strategy for each of these species.

Abstract

The elephant in Way Kambas National Park (TNWK) is living side by side with the buffalos at the grazing area of TNWK’s buffer village. Considering that, the elephant may compete for food when the buffalo enters the conservation area. Data on the diversity of forage plant species is needed in managing buffalos livestock. This study aimed to identify the forage plants from undigested plant fragments in buffalo feces samples from TNWK’s buffer village. Samples were taken from 10 individuals of buffalo in savanna and palm oil plantation. Analysis of the plant composition was carried out by making microscopic whole mount paradermal sections of undigested plant fragments in the feces. Identification refers to epidermal characteristics that are matched with databases and references. The results showed that there were 21 types of epidermal cells which were dominated from Poaceae characterized by Gramineous stomata. The plants fragments found in almost all of the fecal samples were Hymenachne (Poaceae) and Fimbristylis (Cyperaceae). About 9 of the 21 species of plants consumed by buffalo in the buffer village are also foraged by elephants.

Abstract

AbstrakMorfologi serbuk sari dapat dipakai untuk identifikasi tumbuhan, sumber bukti taksonomi, dan diterapkan dalam banyak disiplin ilmu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan ciri morfologi serbuk sari yang berasal dari tumbuhan legum. Sampel serbuk sari diperoleh dari bunga yang dikoleksi di area kampus. Koleksi bunga dilakukan dengan metode jelajah di kawasan kampus IPB, Dramaga. Sampel serbuk sari yang akan diamati dibuat dengan metode asetolisis. Pengukuran morfologi polen dihitung berdasarkan sumbu polar dan ekuatorial dalam skala mikrometer. Ciri morfologi serbuk sari yang diteliti meliputi bentuk, unit serbuk sari, tipe aperture, ukuran, indeks P/E, dan ornamentasi eksin. Serbuk sari diamati dengan mikroskop majemuk Olympus (CX-33) yang dilengkapi kamera indomikro. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bentuk serbuk sari pada legum ada dua macam yaitu circular dan circular oval. Ukuran serbuk sari beragam dari sangat kecil sampai sangat besar. Serbuk sari memiliki indeks P/E > 1,00. Tipe aperture meliputi monoporate, triporate, tetraporate, tricolpate, dan tricolporate. Ornamentasi eksin yang dijumpai berupa scabrate, reticulate, dan psilate. Serbuk sari yang diamati pada penelitian ini menggambarkan morfologi yang khas sehingga dapat dijadikan karakter tambahan dalam mengidentifikasi tumbuhan legum.AbstractPollen morphology can be usefull for plant identification, sources of taxonomic evidence, and apply in many disciplines. This study aimed to describe the morphological characteristics of pollen from legume plants. Pollen samples were obtained from flowers collected in the campus area. The collection of flowers was carried out using the roaming method in the area of the IPB campus, Dramaga. The pollen sample to be observed was made by the acetolysis method. Pollen morphology measurements were calculated based on the polar and equatorial axes on the micrometer scale. The morphological characteristics of the pollen studied included pollen shape, pollen unit, aperture type, size, P/E index, and exine ornamentation. Pollen grains were observed with an Olympus compound microscope (CX-33) equipped with an indomicro camera. The results showed that there are two forms of pollen grains, namely circular and circular oval. Pollen sizes vary from very small to very large. Pollen has a P/E index > 1.00. The aperture types include monoporate, triporate, tetraporate, tricolpate, and tricolporate. The exine ornamentation found is scabrate, reticulate, and psilate. The pollen observed in this study shows a distinctive morphology so that it can be used as an additional character in identifying legume plant.

Abstract

The 2010 eruption of Mount Merapi caused the ecosystem of Mount Merapi National Park had damage. The recovery of the surrounding ecosystem was called succession . Soil seed bank can be a seed resource for the succession. This research was conducted to analyze vegetation composition and explore the potential seed bank of understorey plants. The vegetation analysis was done using a quadratic method in the three locations: highly damaged, moderately damaged, and lightly damaged. A 1×1 m2 plot was used to collect 9 soil samples from each location. The soil samples were stored in a greenhouse for the germination test. Results showed that Poaceae dominated the vegetation in three locations. The vegetation in moderately and lightly damaged locations has a higher score in diversity and evenness than that in highly damaged locations. The seed bank results showed approximately 34 understorey plants from 14 families dominated by Poaceae. The similarity between the standing aboveground vegetation and soil seed banks in the three locations was low.

Abstract

Forage plants are one of the main aspects in the conservation management of the Sumatran elephant. Anatomical studies of elephant food plants can provide reference data needed in identifying the diversity of elephant food plants, especially in the studies with faecal samples. This study aims to provide anatomical data of Sumatran elephant feed plants. The observed samples consisted of leaf samples from 24 species and stem samples from four species. Samples were prepared for microscopic paradermal section using the wholemount method. The results showed that rectangular epidermal cell shapes were found in samples of Poaceae leaves, Cyperaceae leaves and stems, and Arecaceae leaves. Stomata with dumbbell-shaped guard cells were only found in Poaceae leaf samples and Cyperaceae leaf and stem samples. The presence of silica cells and cork cells distinguished the Poaceae samples from Cyperaceae. Other leaf samples had qualitative anatomical characteristics that varied based on anticlinal walls of epidermal cells, type of stomata, and trichomes. Quantitative characterization of epidermal cell size; stomatal size, density, and index; and trichome density are used to complete the species description and distinguish species that have the same qualitative characteristics.
