Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether YouTube videos are effective to use in teaching writing procedure text during the online learning process. It is experimental research with the population of all students of Class XI TMI in the first semester of SMK YPT Tegal in the academic year 2020/2021 with a total of 327 students. The sample was 40 students taken by using the cluster random sampling technique. The samples were grouped into two; (1) control group consisting of 20 students who were not taught using YouTube videos, and (2) experimental group consisting of 20 students who were taught using YouTube videos. The data analyzed using SPSS version 22 obtained the average post-test results of the two groups 78.50> 64.50. Based on the results of hypothesis testing using an independent sample t-test, a significance value of 0.000 was obtained, which was smaller than the significant value of a, which was 0.05, meaning that Ha was accepted. This means that there is a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. In conclusion, the use of YouTube videos in teaching writing has a positive effect on the students’ writing skill.

Abstract

The literacy activities of Tegal Municipality society show significant development where the government pays attention to the people by providing literacy facilities and programs. The people are also active in producing literary works and texts that can be used for language learning. On the other hand, advances in digital technology have not been widely utilized for the development of this potential. Therefore, UPS Tegal collaborates with Poddium to develop the digitalization of literacy media for language and literature education to create an Independent Learning-Independent Campus ecosystem. The purpose of transforming people's works from text to audio format is that these works can reach wider audience to improve the people's literacy. This program involved 17 lecturers, 70 students, and 2 literacy communities. Students are given trainings of script selection, audiobook and podcast production, and product distribution. Then, students are supervised to produce 20 audiobooks and 50 podcasts which are then uploaded to the Poddium's application. The target beneficiaries of this product can access the application for free for the first 6 months, namely students, schools, libraries, and people in general. This program was supported by the government through Matching Fund of Kedaireka from the Directorate General of Higher Education in 2021.

Abstract

Learning (PBL) model in teaching Listening. Sample was fourth semester students of Universitas Pancasakti Tegal. The research instruments were documentation (recording) and questionnaire. Recording was used to explain the implementation of PBL model in teaching Listening. While questionnaire was used to find out students’ respond. Researchers analysed the result of recording based on the steps of implementing PBL model. Moreover, to analyse the questionnaire data, researchers used table and percentage of students’ responds of agreement level toward the implementation of PBL model in Listening class. The result of recording explored steps of implementing PBL model i.e.: (1) deciding a topic of lesson, (2) making group, (3) doing tasks, (4) planning a presentation, (5) performing a presentation, and (6) evaluation. The result of questionnaire showed the positive respond of implementing PBL model in Listening class with the students’ respond level was 90,5%. According to data, it could be concluded that PBL model could be applied in Listening class.

Abstract

The parental engagement of the 1st graders of SD Ihsaniyah Gajahmada Tegal in their children’s early literacy phase is still not maximal. Reading has not become an important part of learning activities at home. Therefore, efforts must be made to encourage parents to pay more attention to children's reading interest by being directly involved in children’s reading activities. The reading aloud activity aims to arouse parental awareness and provide skills for parents of the 1st graders of SD Ihsaniyah Gajahmada Tegal to be able to accompany their children in reading books at home as an effort to develop reading interest from an early age. Materials and demonstration of reading aloud were delivered via podcast and broadcast on Youtube due to social restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Then, parents practiced reading aloud to their children at home. This activity was recorded and the video was sent to the service team for feedback and evaluation. Through this activity, parents could spend their time to assist their children in learning, especially reading. Children learned with enthusiasm and had a pleasant book reading experience. In addition, students' interest in reading will grow because they get a pleasant impression from reading aloud with their parents at home.

Abstract

The notion of digital literacy has become the trend in any field, including this research. This research aimed to find the level of digital literacy and adequate and inadequate domains in each pre-service teachers of English education digital literacy group. Quantitative research with digital competence framework or DCF then adjusted and validated through the expert judgment by Aiken V as the main questionnaire occurred to measure the level of digital literacy. Indonesia and Thailand pre-service teacher in various universities participated in this research. The research found that: i) The most level of digital literacy whether in Indonesia and Thailand, the pre-service teacher has an intermediate level followed by basic and advanced and ii) The researcher claims ‘information’ as an inadequate domain and ‘implement tech to learning’ as the adequate domain in each level of digital literacy. Further research is needed to examine effectiveness of project-based learning, problem-based learning, and case study in enhancing digital literacy through qualitative and quantitative research.
