Abstract

This article provides practical application of employing flipped learning based bloom taxonomy theory in teaching English speaking at higher education. Flipped classroom/learning is defined as learning model in which content attainment is shifted forward to outside of class, then followed by instructor-facilitated concept application activities in class, while Bloom Taxonomy is set of learning framework used to classify the learning outcomes and objectives. To implement these two concepts, TED talks is used as the main teaching and learning material. Both strengths and weaknesses are analyzed for teachers’ consideration to implement this teaching model

Abstract

Tasks-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) has successfully attracted attention of a second (L2)/foreign language (FL) practitioners, researchers, trainers as well as curriculum developer. Much of the research conducted, however, has mainly focused in formal educational settings, and less research carried out in non-formal educational context.  The intent of this paper, therefore, is to advocate the notion of enacting TBLT curriculum in General English (GE) program in the pursuit of increasing students’ language communicative competence at Institute of English Course and Training (IECT), one of Indonesian Non-Formal Educations (INFE) in East Lombok Regency of Nusa Tenggara Barat Province, Indonesia. The rationales and challenges of enactment will be provided, and mainly will be based on my experience as a founder of non-formal language centers, as well as a reflexive practitioner. The advocacy should not solely confine to my home regency, East Lombok, but also to language center of INFE that runs GE in Nusa Tenggara Province.

Abstract

This research analyzes students’ pronunciation errors in English diphthongs in MA NW Teko. The objective was to identify commonly mispronounced errors. The research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects were twelfth grade students at MA NW Teko. Fifteen students were chosen as representatives for analysis. Data was collected from oral tests, interviews, and observations. The data source was a short story called "Sangkuriang". Based on the oral test, students fluently read the story with 14 students in paragraph 1 and 11 students in paragraph 2. In paragraphs 3 and 4, the students read the story with less fluency, with 9 and 12 students respectively. During the interview, students mentioned difficulty in identifying diphthong words due to insufficient vocabulary mastery. In paragraph 1, 8 words were pronounced incorrectly, 13 words in paragraph 2, 10 words in paragraph 3, and 12 words in paragraph 4. However, observation revealed that out of the 5 types of diphthongs given, 14 out of 15 students struggled with pronouncing the diphthong "oʊ", with only 1 student pronouncing it correctly. Therefore, the research results indicate that the errors faced by the students were not significantly different from those who could pronounce correctly.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pronunciation of street vendors in the tourism area using the IELST Speaking descriptor. Pronunciation is vital in tourism as it facilitates successful communication between visitors and locals. Accurate pronunciation enables a traveler to travel to a strange city successfully. a research question was developed to guide the study: the pronunciation level of street vendors in tourist areas is measured by speaking IELST band descriptions. The research results were determined using qualitative descriptive methods. Interviews were employed to collect data. It was designed as a dialogue and monologue. The data was analyzed by table analysis with 9 participants from different backgrounds of education, such as graduated from elementary, junior, and senior high school or no educational background. The results showed that the pronunciation level of street vendors is "limited," with some of them receiving band 6, around 4 people, and criteria "limited," which is more, approximately 5 people. The lack of language training facilities was one of the issues. As a result, providing specialist English language instruction geared toward the tourism context is a viable solution to this problem.

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the specific English-speaking needs of local guides in Tete Batu by exploring the relevant learning topics for their guiding roles and examining the challenges they face in delivering effective services to tourists. This research used a sequential explanatory mixed-method design. In the first phase, questionnaires were distributed to 27 active local guides to identify the most frequently used English topics in their guiding activities. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS 26.00 to determine topic priorities. In the second phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five selected guides to gain deeper insights into the challenges they face and to confirm the questionnaire results. The interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings revealed that a total of 22 English learning topics are used by local guides in Tete Batu. Among these, 11 topics are frequently used in daily guiding practices, while the other 11 are applied only in specific or situational contexts. In addition, the guides reported several challenges in their work, such as sudden weather changes, limited destination knowledge among new guides, tourists’ entrance tickets, the absence of a Tourist Information Center (TIC), and the lack of learning resources. The findings suggest that English training should focus on practical, topic-based content aligned with real guiding tasks.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perceptions of the animated film Finding Nemo as a medium for learning English vocabulary and explores how it facilitates vocabulary acquisition in authentic and engaging contexts. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study involved 35 second-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Hamzanwadi University. Data were gathered through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed thematically to identify patterns emerging from participants’ responses. The findings indicate that students generally have positive perceptions toward using Finding Nemo in vocabulary learning. They reported acquiring both concrete and abstract vocabulary through contextual exposure in the film’s dialogues and visual storytelling. The combination of audio, visual, and emotional elements enhanced comprehension and long-term retention. Moreover, students expressed that learning through the film was more enjoyable and motivating compared to traditional methods, as it fostered a relaxed and interactive learning environment. These results suggest that animated films such as Finding Nemo not only enrich students’ vocabulary but also promote positive attitudes and motivation toward learning English.
