Abstract

The advent of digital technologies has transformed social interactions, institutions, and research methodologies, giving rise to the field of digital sociology, which examines how digital media and big data reshape social practices and inequalities. Despite its growing influence, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of its evolution remains scarce. This study fills this gap by systematically analyzing global research trends in digital sociology from 2014 to 2024, employing a bibliometric approach with data from Scopus and Web of Science (109 documents) and using VOSviewer for co-citation and bibliographic coupling analyses. Key findings reveal dominant themes such as algorithmic governance, digital labor, and AI ethics, with influential works by scholars like Lupton (2014), Castells (1996), and Pasquale (2015), while also highlighting gaps in digital inclusion and Global South perspectives. The study underscores the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and inclusive digital governance, providing a foundation for future research and policy decisions in addressing societal challenges posed by digital transformation.

Abstract

The phenomenon of using second accounts on Instagram is growing among students, especially in generation Z, to express themselves more freely and personally. The purpose of this research is to understand the meaning of students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu regarding the use of second accounts on Instagram, with a qualitative approach and phenomenological method. Dramaturgical theory was used as the theoretical basis to analyze how individuals present themselves in social interactions, by distinguishing between “front stage” and “back stage” in the use of social media. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation of students who actively use second accounts on Instagram. The research findings show that university students use second accounts as a private place to express feelings, stage totality: front and back stage working together and an escape from social pressure and aesthetic standards. Second accounts are considered as a symbol of a truer self-identity and as a tool to build closer social relationships with certain groups of friends. The use of second accounts also reflects students' strategies in managing self-image and privacy in the digital world. Through the perspective of dramaturgical theory, the use of second accounts is understood as the result of different self-presentations on the "front stage" and "back stage", where individuals adjust their performances to achieve personal satisfaction and social control in communication on social media.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the behavioral changes experienced by perpetrators of early marriage in Padang Capo Village, Seluma Regency, Bengkulu Province. Early marriage is still a pressing problem, especially in rural areas, despite various counseling efforts and government policies. This practice is generally influenced by low socioeconomic conditions, local cultural norms, limited education, and pregnancy before marriage. This study used a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. To understand the behavioral changes that occur, this study uses behavioral theory in sociology, which emphasizes that individual behavior is formed through the process of social learning, reinforcement from the environment, and adaptation to new social norms and roles. The main subjects in this study are four individuals who married under the age of 18. The results showed that early marriage resulted in complex and multidimensional behavioral changes, including emotional, psychological, social, and family aspects. Some informants experienced high emotional stress, limited access to education, and loss of personal freedom, especially after giving birth. However, some also showed signs of adaptation and emotional growth in their marital relationships. Changes in the social environment and new responsibilities contributed to.

Abstract

Violence against children in family settings is increasingly shifting from visible physical forms to more subtle non-physical and digitally mediated practices. Emotional neglect, verbal intimidation, and parental digital control are frequently normalized as discipline, despite their significant psychological consequences for children. This study examines the forms of non-physical and digital violence in parent–child relationships, analyzes the social factors driving this shift in violence patterns, and explores how symbolic meanings constructed through daily interactions shape differing perceptions of violence. Using a qualitative case study design grounded in the social definition paradigm and symbolic interactionism, this research was conducted in an urban residential area of Bengkulu City. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with 14 informants (parents and children aged 10–15), and documentation. The findings reveal that emotional, verbal, and digital violence dominate parent–child interactions, particularly through excessive monitoring, verbal threats, and unilateral restrictions on digital access. Parents interpret these practices as protective discipline, while children experience them as intimidation and distrust. Parental anxiety over digital risks, social pressure, and limited digital parenting literacy further contribute to the normalization of such practices. The study contributes to family sociology by conceptualizing digital control as a form of symbolic power, where authority is exercised not through physical force but through control over digital access and communication. It extends symbolic interactionism by demonstrating how digital infrastructure devices, messaging platforms, and internet access mediates the production and normalization of non-physical violence in everyday family interactions. These findings highlight the need to reconsider child protection and digital parenting frameworks to account for subtle forms of symbolic and relational violence within families.
