Two theories—one supported by the research—were used in the analysis of signifiers and signified signs in this study. The first theories is Saussure's (1983) theory. According to Barthes (1986), there are two theories: denotation and connotation. And the last supported theory by Wierzbicka (1996) is the is the theory of colour terms. The aim of this research is to explain the verbal and non-verbal signs contained in the magazine and also find out what meaning is contained in the data. Abstract

The study examines the derivational suffixes, Nominal Suffixes found in the game “Final Fantasy VIII”. It focuses on analyzing the types and morphological processes, providing insights into linguistic structure of the game's language. Descriptive qualitative method was employed, which allowed for an in-depth exploration and elaboration of the data. The analysis was conducted in the framework proposed by Lieber (2009), with additional theoretical support from Plag (2003). The study identified 1,189 words containing derivational suffixes within the game. These suffixes were categorized into four types: nominal, verbal, adjectival, and adverbial. The findings revealed that nominal suffixation occurred in 1.189 instances, accounting for 47.7% of the total. Verbal suffixation was observed in 4 instances, representing a mere 2.0%. Adjectival suffixation was the most prevalent, with 391 instances, making up 42.5% of the identified suffixes. Adverbial suffixation was the least common, with only 2 instances, constituting 7.8 % of the total. The analysis highlights that adjectival suffixation is the most common type of derivational suffixation found in the game. This predominance of adjectival suffixes suggests a linguistic trend within the game's dialogue. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how derivational processes function in the context of video game linguistics.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze one classic fables by Aesop, namely “The Wind and The Sun” The main focus of this study is to understand the narrative functions of these fables and to identify the characters within them. The approach used in this analysis is Vladimir Propp's (1928) structuralism theory, which has proven effective in analyzing the narrative structure of folktales and fables. Propp (1928) suggests that narratives can be broken down into several basic functions that help understand how stories are constructed. Data for this study is sourced from the English language textbook, The Roberts English Series: A Linguistics Program, book 3, which contains various fables used as teaching materials. The study delves deeply into these fables, meticulously following the theoretical framework mention while “The Wind and The Sun” illustrates the power of persuasion compared to force. This study provides profound insights into how fables are used as pedagogical tools to teach moral and ethical values to young readers.

Abstract

This study investigated the semantic functions of English prefixation in Anica Mrose Rissi’s novel Always Forever Maybe. It employed a qualitative descriptive approach and analyzed five prefixed lexical items (rename, disintegrate, overblown, Outbid, and unintelligible) to examine how prefixation contributed to emotional tone, character development, and thematic depth. Data were gathered through close reading and were analysed morphologically using the frameworks of Katamba (1993) and Lieber (2009). In addition, the data were analysed by using a combination of labelled analysis, bracketing, and tree diagram techniques. The findings revealed that prefixes functioned as semantic modifiers without altering the grammatical class of the base words. They fulfilled conceptual roles such as reversal, directionality, intensity, and spatial relation. Unlike previous studies that addressed affixation more broadly, this research offered a focused perspective on the narrative utility of prefixation in literary discourse. The analysis of these prefixed words revealed that they serve as subtle yet impactful linguistic tools, enhancing literary expression by adding layers of meaning to the narrative, deepening character portrayals, and enriching thematic resonance. The study concludes that prefixation is a significant contributor to the overall literary and emotional impact of the novel.
