Abstract

This study examines the transformation of plantation commodities in Adolina, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, from tobacco to oil palm between 1980 and 2020. The research is motivated by structural changes in the plantation economy of East Sumatra, a region historically recognized as a major producer of high-quality Deli tobacco. Driven by shifts in global market demand, rising production costs, and government policies promoting oil palm expansion, plantation land in Adolina gradually shifted from tobacco cultivation to oil palm estates. Employing the historical method with a qualitative approach through heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this study utilizes oral testimonies, archival records, plantation documents, statistical data, books, and scholarly journals. The findings reveal that the transition occurred progressively and was influenced by economic, social, agrarian, and policy-related factors. The conversion of plantation land altered labor structures from seasonal tobacco employment to more permanent oil palm labor arrangements and reshaped local economic patterns toward market-oriented livelihoods. The study argues that the transformation not only reflects economic adaptation but also contributes to the historiography of East Sumatran plantations by demonstrating the historical continuity and restructuring of agrarian relations in the post-colonial plantation sector.

Abstract

This research delves into the Sulalatus Salatin manuscript, exploring its historical context and content to identify and describe the myths embedded within, reflecting the Malay society around the 15th century. The study aims to deepen the understanding of the Sulalatus Salatin manuscript and the prevalent myths of that era. Utilizing the historical method, the research encompasses three stages: identifying the research problem, collecting data, and analyzing content through a textology approach to comprehend past societal views on mythology. Data collection involves library research to find relevant studies, skimming the text to examine each chapter, and documenting various sources such as documents, notes, and archives. The results reveal that the Sulalatus Salatin manuscript narrates the reigns of the Malay Sultanate of Malacca, depicting Malay values such as philosophy, ethics, leadership, aesthetics, language, and religion. The manuscript records events related to the rise, glory, and downfall of the Malay Kingdom of Malacca in 1511 CE, highlighting the introduction of Islam and Malacca's role as a center of Islamic education.

Abstract

This study explores the epistemology of Islamic history within the framework of Islamic historiography in North Sumatra through academic research at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara, Universitas Sumatera Utara, and Universitas Negeri Medan. Islamic history in this region is shaped not only by rational and empirical facts but also by intuition, revelation, and local cultural elements such as mentifacts and sociofacts, requiring an integrative epistemological approach to achieve a holistic reconstruction. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical method, the study combines fieldwork and library research. Data were obtained from theses, dissertations, journals, books, and papers, as well as direct observation, interviews, and examinations of manuscripts and historical artifacts. Source verification was conducted through external and internal criticism, recognizing the limitations of purely empirical methods in addressing the transcendental dimensions of Islamic history. Thematic analysis was organized according to regional scope and scholarly orientation, guided by the prophetic social sciences paradigm that prioritizes ethical and spiritual values as reflected in the Qur’an (Q.S. Ali Imran: 110). Findings reveal distinct emphases: UIN focuses on religious studies and scholar biographies,  Universitas Sumatera Utara  highlights socio-cultural dynamics of the Malay community, and  Universitas Negeri Medan  displays thematic diversity shaped by students’ regional backgrounds.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of group communication in the self-concept of volunteers at Sekolah Rakyat Kota Medan. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving five volunteers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that group communication takes place through face-to-face interactions and online communication used for coordination, discussion, and activity evaluation. Through these communication processes, volunteers perceive themselves as more confident, open, and empathetic individuals. Supporting factors include a supportive environment, interaction intensity, and feedback among members, while the obstacles identified consist of misunderstandings in online communication, differences in communication styles, and low participation among some members. The study indicates that group communication plays a role in the development of volunteers’ self-concept within a community-based educational setting.
