Abstract

The objective of this study are to identify the purposes of using Google Form by the teachers, and to investigate how google form is used by the teachers at the the seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Medan. To achieve these purposes the researcher used qualitative research design. The subjects of the study are two teachers of English of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Medan. Techniques of data collection were observation and interview The findings show that purposes of using google form are : to save more time in doing quiz questions, to saves paper, to make learning process easier and more practical, to get the mark quickly, the marks given by the teachers objective and automatic. The steps taken by the first teacher were not similar to the steps taken by the second teacher. The steps of the first teacher were (open a Gmail account , type the title of the questionnaire in the formless title , describe the purpose of making the questionnaire in the form of description section, click the purple forms icon after opening it, choose a blank worksheet, make a question on the writing on the writing of an untitled question,choose the option that has been provided by the Google Form, lock the question so turn on the option “ must be filled “ if the question must be filled, edit and format a form quiz, send questions into the Google Classroom, and the last is the result of students worksheet form’s Google Form ) while the steps of the second teacher were (open a Gmail account, choose the answer option to the right of the question, turn on the option” must be filed “if the question must be filled , choose a question options in the Google Form, give the score in the form , type the title of the questionnaire in the formless title, send questions into the classroom and the last step is open the spreadsheet to know the result of students worksheet in the Google Form) First teacher took the steps, however both of them inserted google form into Google Classroom.Keywords: Qualitative Descriptive, Google Form, Reading Descriptive Text, Junior High School.

Abstract

This study was aimed at developing Digital English writing test by using Quia or Quizziz for semester 2 students in Academic Year 2021/2022. Quizizz application is a digital application that has a colorful display with animation on its interface. This writing test is to find out the students’ initial ability in writing text, such as making a simple outline and write them into a simple paragraph with main idea and topic determined by the researchers. This developing test is useful for students of English and Literature Department and developed as a pre-test for mapping freshmen students’ competency in writing. Research and Development design was used in this study, with the data used from the result of need analysis as well as interviewing the lecturers and students. The data were chosen by random sampling with the total number is 60 students of the second semester in Academic Year 2021/2022 of English and Literature Department as well as 4 lecturers of writing course.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and investigate the challenges faced by English teachers in choosing teaching methods to teach description texts in SMP Negeri 7 Kisaran. This study uses qualitative descriptive research design. The data were taken from 2 English teachers who taught at SMP Negeri 7 on the description text material for the seventh grade with interviews and documentation. The data analysis in this study used the Miles and Huberman’s model with three stages, there are data reduction, data display and withdrawal conclusion. The study found that the challenges faced by teachers in choosing teaching methods to teach descriptive text materials are limited vocabulary, lack of student interest, limited time, limited media and goal of teaching. Teachers who taught at SMP Negeri 7 Kisaran said that the most challenge they faced in choosing teaching methods for descriptive text material was limited students of vocabulary. The solutions from the teachers when faced the challenges are using interesting media, utilizing technology, and using the Grammar Translation Method.Keywords: Challenges, Teaching Methods, Descriptive Text

Abstract

This study was about Speaking Classroom Interaction Based on Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) Model for Grade VIII at SMP Negeri 16 Medan. The aim of this study were to state clearly the objectives of the study in relation of the problem posed. The objective was to describe how the pattern of IRF in the speaking classroom interaction for students grade VIII at SMP Negeri 16 Medan. This research used qualitative research. The data were collected in two ways by observing by video recording and interviewing. The data was analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard theory (1975). The results of this study were the following (1) The language used by the teacher and the students in the classroom interaction was not balance. They are seldom to use English. Both teacher and students used Bahasa for 57% and the rest 43% they use English. (2) The lowest pattern was the teacher’s feedback. It had 22% feedback given by the teacher to the students. The students’ response was the dominant pattern in the classroom interaction rather than initiation. The students’ response had 44%, while the teacher’s initiation had 34%. This pattern happened when the teacher asked students the examples of using ‘can’ and to do some exercises of using ‘can’ in sentences.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop the speaking materials in Showing Care and Congratulation for the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The study was educational Research and Development (R & D). The data were gathered by distributing questionnaires to 30 students of SMA Negeri 20 Medan and administering interviews to the teacher. The result of the study was a set of developed teaching speaking materials based on CTL entitled “Meet and Speak” Which consists of two chapters on the topic of (1) Don’t be Sad My Friend and (2) Good Job. Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop PowToon as media for teaching the 8 studentsin writing descriptive text at SMPN 6 Percut Sei Tuan. This study used the qualitativedescriptive method. This research was conducted based on educational research anddevelopment (R&D) through six steps, namely: gathering data, analyzing data,designing media, validating by the expert, revising media, and final product. TheInstrument of Collecting Data was questionnaire. The finding showed that one videoof PowToon was used to teach English writing to Junior High School. The developedmedia PowToon had been validated by two experts and the average score has gottenwas 87%. It was categorized “Excellent” since that the developed to teaching mediaPowToon for writing skills were suitable for the 8 grade students of SMPN 6 PercutSei Tuan.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the target and learning needs of Grade X SMA SWASTA MARISI MEDAN. Moreover, it had a goal to develop English materials for learning writing skills. This is a research and development (R&D) study. The subjects of this research were 25 students of Grade X SMA SWASTA MARISI MEDAN. The need analysis data were collected by using questionnaires and an interview. Then, the results of questionnaires were calculated through percentage. Thus, the highest percentage was considered as the needs of students. Meanwhile, the results of expert judgment were analyzed in the form of descriptive statistics. Three units of materials were developed in this research. Each unit consists of introduction, main lesson and reinforcement. These materials used Project-Based  Learning as the approach in learning writing skill. The units covered some tasks as identify the generic structure, write a short paragraph and complete the sentences. Mostly, the themes used represented students’ knowledge about the popular places and person around them. According to the results of the expert judgment, the materials were very relevant to be used for Grade X SMA SWASTA MARISI MEDAN.    Keywords: learning writing, writing, descriptive text

Abstract

This research was aimed to develop English speaking materials for the students of Accounting program at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang especially the tenth grade. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through four phases; Evaluation and Need Analysis, Material Development, Material Validation and Revision and Final Product. It was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang. The date were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 10 students to get the student’s needs. The result of questionnaire showed that the relevance of existing Speaking material with Accounting major just 35 % (less relevant) and 90 % of  the students need the relevance English speaking material with their major and related to work situation. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English Speaking materials which contain the appropriate knowledge or topic with the syllabus, student’s level and major. The material developed into 3 units based on the basic competence on syllabus; Congratulating and Complimenting, Expressing Intention, and Giving Announcement. The product of English speaking material validated by two experts, lecturer and English teacher. The result of experts’ judgment is 89.5 and it belongs to good category. The experts’ validation shows that the materials are appropriate and recommended to be used for students of Accounting program especially in SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang.Keywords: Research and Development(R & D), English Speaking materials, Accounting Program

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop appropriate materials for reading narrative text. This study was carried out at English Department of Universitas Negeri Medan. This research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) Method. The research consists of six stages; gathering information and data, analysing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising materials, and the last was final product. The data was gathered through the distribution of questionnaire for students and interviewed a lecturer to get the students’ need. The product has been validated by two experts in percentage terms. The average score of experts’ validations was 94.2% in content aspect, the presentation aspect was 95%, the language aspect was 96.6%, and the layout was 95%. The average score was 95.2% which categorized as very good. This study concluded that the developed project-based reading materials of narrative text may be used as teaching materials.
