Abstract

Setiap individu memperoleh bahasa kedua dengan caranya sendiri-sendiri. Pemerolehan bahasa kedua yang terjadi secara alamiah adalah cara terbaik dalam pemerolehan bahasa kedua/asing, yang terjadi dalam komunikasi sehari-hari, bebas dari pengajaran atau pimpinan maupun guru. Tidak ada keseragaman cara, melalui interaksi spontan yang terjadi dalam komunikasi sehari-hari, bebas dari pimpinan sistematis yang disengaja. Interaksi ini memicu komunikasi bahasa dan mendorong pemerolehan bahasa kedua. Faktor-faktor afektif berperan sebagai penentu akuisisi input di mana lingkungan formal lebih banyak memberikan peranan dalam proses pemerolehan bahasa kedua daripada lingkungan informal. Kata Kunci: pemerolehan bahasa kedua, input, interaksi, lingkungan pemerolehan bahasa.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe (1) what is the strategies that teacher’s use in assessing young learners’ speaking skill (2) To know the problems faced by teacher in assessing young learners’ speaking skill. Assessing speaking skills for young learners is one of the difficult tasks in language learning because young learners’ have higher activity levels and easily distracted by others. English teachers need to be competent in applying strategies in conduct speaking assessment for young learners’. The research was conducted at SD GenBi School Medan. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was English teacher of SD GenBi School Medan. The data were obtained through observation, and interview. The data were analyzed by qualitative data analysis technique which consists of three events, namely ; data reduction, data presentation, and make a conclusion of data. The findings showed that the teacher use various strategies when conducting the speaking assessments, namely; Picture Talks, Story-telling, Oral Presentations, Answering Open-questions, Minidialogues and role-plays, and Word Repetition Tasks. But in its, the teacher faced some problems. The problem was time limitation. Furthermore, speaking assessments strategies is very difficult to address to young learners' whereas teachers must look at young learners' ability to focus individually. This research was aimed to develop English digital conversation media for speaking activities based on the students’ need at SMAN 1 Kec. Binjai Kab.Langkat. This research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) method. There were seven steps applied in this research, the steps were: 1). Potential and Problem 2). Gathering data and information 3). Product design 4). Validating to experts 5). Revising Design 6). Product test 7). Final product revision. The subject of this research was tenth grade students of social science at SMAN 1 Kec. Binjai Kab. Langkat. The instruments of collecting data were questionnaires and interview. The data analyzed by using descriptive technique. Need analysis questionnaire was calculated using percentage by Suharto (2006) to get an information of students’ need before developing digital conversation media. Expert judgment data were calculated by using Likert Scale, mean and criteria interval of expert judgment to know the validity of digital conversation media which has been develop. The result of expert validation was 4,5 which mean English conversation media is Very Good category. Therefore the media is appropriate to use in the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Kec.Binjai Kab.Langkat to teach speaking. Abstract

This research has aims to develop English speaking materials for grade X culinary study program at SMKN 10 Medan, first this research was conducted by Research and Development through has Six stages, they are: gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by the experts, revising and the last was Final product. The subject in this research was students grade X boga 3 at SMKN 10 Medan where the students consisting of 36 students, the instrumentations for data collection  were giving a questionnaire and interview, questionnaire was administrate and it answer by the students to get the students need, and the interview was administrate to the English teacher, the result of the questionnaire and interview prove that the student need some appropriate speaking material in descriptive text that has relation with their program study, that is culinary. Thus, developing English speaking materials consist of three units: lets’ talk about chef Juna (describing People), how the smell, taste and texture of your favorite food? (Describing things) and the last units was talk about famous restaurant (Describing Place). The product has been validated by two experts, and the average score are 4, 75 are coming from English Lecture’s, the second average score 4, 89 are coming from English teacher. From the score above, it means that the product categorized as relevant for grade X students of culinary study program.Key words: R&D, English for Specific Purposes, English speaking materials, culinary study program.

Abstract

Perbaikan pembelajaran berkelanjutan diperlukan guru yang dapat dilakukan melalui publikasi hasil penelitian. Kenyataan menunjukkan bahwa guru masih sedikit menulis artikel hasil penelitian disebabkan oleh kurangnya pengalaman menulis artikel ilmiah. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan ini maka Universitas Negeri Medan melakukan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Pengabdian ini bertujuan meningkatkan kompetensi guru menulis artikel ilmiah melalui pengubahan hasil penelitian menjadi artikel ilmiah standar yang siap dikirimkan ke Jurnal Ilmiah. Kegiatan dilakukan melibatkan 83 guru dari 23 kabupaten dan Kota mitra kerjasama. Tahapan yang dilakukan meliputi (1) mengidentifikasi kebutuhan guru menulis artikel ilmiah, (2) Mempersiapkan materi pelatihan sesuai kharakteristik guru, (3) Melatihan dan mendampingi guru mengubah laporan penelitian tindakan kelas menjadi artikel, dan (4) Mengukur  kompetensi guru menyelesaikan draft artikel. Kegiatan pengabdian telah dilakukan dengan baik secara online agar dapat menjangkau  Guru di berbagai wilayah Sumatra Utara. Tahap awal adalah pembekalan dan pengayaan teori menulis artikel melalui penyampaian tujuh paket modul pelatihan. Tahap lanjutan adalah pendampingan menyelesaikan draft artikel selama satu bulan sesuai kemampuan dan motivasi peserta. Sebanyak 83 guru menyelesaikan pelatihan awal, sebanyak 49 guru melanjutkan pendampingan, 9 guru menyelesaikan draft artikel, dan 5 judul artikel sudah submit di Jurnal ilmiah.

Abstract

The study was aimed to recognize how a teaching method could increase students’ competence in speaking. The objective of the study is to describe how the dubbing movie increases the students speaking skill of the tenth Grade Students  of SMA N 15 Medan. The research design is a qualitative research. The data collecting methods were interview, observation, and documentation. The data gained was analyzed by using Miles and Huberman model of the data analysis. The research found that the students of the Grade X in SMA N 15 Medan enjoyed the process of preparing the video dubbing from the announcement, script preparing, and the practice. Some students who noticed difficult in speaking English were found increase in speaking competence especially in languages expression and found a fun way to practice English speaking. For short, the video dubbing teaching method increased the students of SMA N 15 Medan English speaking competence.

Abstract

This Study was about the theme, rheme and thematic progression of students ' recount text of the tenth grade at SMA Budisatrya Medan. The aims of this study were (1) to investigate thematic progression pattern used in recount text (2) to investigate the reason why the students used thematic progression in the way they did. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study were clauses of students ‘recount text. The instruments of collecting data were elicitation technique and interview. The data was analyzed by using interactive model technique of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The results of this study were the following. (1) There were two patterns of thematic progression used in students’ recount text, they were Theme Reiteration/Constant Theme Pattern (TR/CTP), and Zig - zag / Linear Theme Pattem ( Zig - zag / LTP). (2) The reason to use the thematic progression by the students, they were: (a) the students were lack of knowledge about the use of the thematic progression, (b) they are also less interested in writing. (c) The students got resources from English teacher’s explanation and (d) the students got resources from reading recount text.Keywords: Theme , Rheme , Thematic Progression , Recount text .

Abstract

The objectives of this study wasto develop the reading materials in descriptive text for grade ten students of computer network engineering in SMK YAPIM 1 Medan. This study was conducted a Research and Development (R&D). The subjects of the study were the students of grade ten students of computer network engineering in SMK YAPIM 1 Medan consisting of 29 students. The research procedures, were adapted from Jolly and Bolitho’s model in Tomlinson (1998) with some modifications, consisting of conducting the need analysis, writing the course grid, developing draft, getting expert judgment and evaluating the draft, also revising the draft of the materials.The instruments to collect the data were need analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaire. The data from the need analysis were analyzed quantitatively using frequency and precentage, then the results were used to develop the course grid. The data from the expert judgment were analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics while the suggestions were used to revise the first draft of the materials.The product of this study is a set of writing materials of recount text entitled “Well-performing and Affordable Netbooks” for grade ten students of computer network engineering in SMK YAPIM 1 Medan. Abstract

This research was aimed to develop appropriate, interesting and attractive speaking media in teaching descriptive text for seventh grade students of MTsS UMMI Lubuk Pakam. Due to the result in the form of product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (1989) theory with some modifications. The subject of this study was the seventh grade students of MTsS UMMI Lubuk Pakam. In conducting this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis, designing the first draft of media, revising the media, and producing the final product as the meme comic. The instruments of collecting data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The interview result was analyzed as qualitative data and the questionnaires analyzed as quantitative data. These data were needs of students covering target needs and learning needs. This study developed speaking media which only focused on descriptive text taught in the odd semester. Abstract

This research was aimed to develop English speaking materials for the students of Accounting program at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang especially the tenth grade. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through four phases; Evaluation and Need Analysis, Material Development, Material Validation and Revision and Final Product. It was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang. The date were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 10 students to get the student’s needs. The result of questionnaire showed that the relevance of existing Speaking material with Accounting major just 35 % (less relevant) and 90 % of  the students need the relevance English speaking material with their major and related to work situation. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English Speaking materials which contain the appropriate knowledge or topic with the syllabus, student’s level and major. The material developed into 3 units based on the basic competence on syllabus; Congratulating and Complimenting, Expressing Intention, and Giving Announcement. The product of English speaking material validated by two experts, lecturer and English teacher. The result of experts’ judgment is 89.5 and it belongs to good category. The experts’ validation shows that the materials are appropriate and recommended to be used for students of Accounting program especially in SMK Negeri 1 Sidikalang.Keywords: Research and Development(R & D), English Speaking materials, Accounting Program
