Abstract

This study deals with language shift and language maintenance of intermarriages Chinese families.It aims at finding out the factors make language shift and language maintenance occur, finding out how language shift and language maintain occur and finding out why language shift and language maintain occur.This study was conducted in qualitative method.The sources of data were four intermarriage Chinese families; meanwhile the data was their  utterances.The data was analyzed by using Interactive Model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. To find out what factors affecting language shift and maintenance, the researcher used Holmes’s theory. Based on the data analysis, the first finding shows that there were six factors  affecting language shift and language maintenance occured in intermarriage chinese families namely bilingualism, migration, economic, environment, demographic, and attitude. And as the second finding was that the language shift and language maintenance occured since there are two languages exist in interethnic marriage. The existence of two languages means the competition between two languages. And as the third finding was the reasons why language shift and language maintenance occured are bilingualism in which the man or woman mastered two languages which led to language maintenance, migration in which the women migrate to follow their husband, economic factor dealing with the men and women’s occupations, environment where they lived in homogenous or heterogenous ethnic, demographic factor, and attitude which might be postive or negative. Keywords: language shift, maintenance, intermarriage, qualitative

Abstract

This research concerns on improving students’ achievement in speaking by using short movie media. The objective was to find out the improvement of students’ achievement in speaking. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the research was XI IPA-1 students of SMA Negeri 8 Medan. The numbers of students were sixteen students. They were taught speaking by using short movie media. The instruments used were diary notes, interview sheets, and observation sheets. In analyzing data, the mean of students’ score for the first competency test was 42,5 for the second competency test was 61,25 and for the third competency test was 85 and the total percentage of improvement from the first competency test to the third competency test was 68,75%. The conclusion is that students’ achievement in speaking can be improved by using short movie media. It is suggested that teachers should apply short movie media as one of media to improve students’ speaking achievement.   Key Words: Students’ achievement, Speaking, Short Movie Media

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out an appropriate English listening materials for the Grade X students of music performing art vocational school. Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) or Vocational School is an institution where students are prepared to be work-ready after finishing their education in specific major. Music Performing Art is one of the major provided in Indonesia’s vocational school. By the fact that listening activities are often ignored by teachers and that listening is one of the test in the National Examination, then listening activities are considered important in English learning activity. However, the finding of materials that provided for the Grade X students of Music Performing Art major at SMK Negeri 11 Medan shows that the listening materials provided in the textbook are not related to the students’ major, instead the materials are rather general and more suitable for other major. Therefore, it is needed to develop the English listening materials for the tenth grader of music performing art major. Small-Scale Research and Development (R&D) is the suitable method in developing the materials. Based on the students’ needs analysis obtained from the questionnaires which responded by 64 students and interviews which involved 4 students, the researcher found that 78.13% of the respondents assumed that the existing materials provided by the teachers are general, and further 93.75% expect a major-related English listening materials. The materials are developed by adding some musical terms, like music instruments, and topics related to musical field, like popular singer’s profile, as a step to meet the students’ needs. The experts’ validation shows that the materials are appropriate and recommended to be used. Based on the result of the study, conclusion and suggestions are directed to the English teachers in SMK Negeri 11 Medan, especially, and in other music major vocational school, generally, who are expected to provide materials which are related to the students’ major, by doing so the students might have motivation in learning English and to support their knowledge to be a professional musicians. Key words: Research and Development (R&D) method, English listening materials, Music performing art major

Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop Picture Series as a media for teaching writing procedure text at the third year students of Pahlawan Nasional Junior High School. The researcher used Research and Development (R &D) method through ten steps: observing, evaluating need analysis, developing first media, validating with experts, revising it, testing in small group, revising, testing in large group, revising, producing final product. The subjects of this research were 30 students from IX-1 class, and 34 students from IX-2 class. The instrument of collecting data was using questionnaires. The data were analyzed by descriptive text technique. The result of the product from two validators – an English lecturer from State University of Medan and an English teacher from Pahlawan Nasional Junior High School, was in scale of 4 which was in good quality. And the result from all of the students was in scale of 4 which was in good quality too. It means that the developed product/Picture Series is eligible to be used for teaching writing procedure text for the third year students in Pahlawan Nasional Junior High School. Keywords: Research and Development (R & D), writing procedure text, picture series

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the effect of Visual media on students’ achievement in writing procedure text. This study was conducted in experimental design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Stabat. There are 60 students of seventh grade as sample of the research. This study was conducted by using random sampling. The sample was divided into two groups, experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Visual media (picture), while the control group was taught by using Video. The instrument of collecting the data was a written test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used scoring rubrics. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shown that t-observed is higher than t-table (3.52 > 2.00) at the level signivicance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom 58 (df = N-2). It means that there was a significant effect of using Visual media on students’ achievement in writing procedure text. So, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.Keywords: Visual Media, Students’ Achievement, Writing Procedure Text

Abstract

This study deals with the improving students’ achievement in reading narrative text by using reciprocal teaching. The research of this study was conducted by using action research. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students SMA Negeri 6 Medan. One class was taken as the subject, namely the students from X-5. There were 49 students, consisting of 22 male and 27 female. This research was done in two cycles; there was three meetings in cycle I and three meetings in cycle II. The instruments for collecting data were reading narrative text (25 items of multiple choice tests) teacher make test as quantitative data and interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes as qualitative data. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the treatment I was 61.79, for the treatment II was 72.24 and treatment III was 81.71. The data showed that the students’ score was rising in every treatment. The conclusion is that the use of reciprocal teaching method can improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. It suggested to English teacher to apply reciprocal teaching method in teaching reading comprehension. Key words: reading, narrative text, reciprocal teaching.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop learning material on descriptive text based on the students’ needs as a supplementary material. This research was conducted as research and development (R & D) design. The data were taken from the books, internet and environment. The instruments used in this research were questionnaire and interview. The product of this study was a set of learning material that can be used as a supplementary material. The developed learning material consisted of two units, namely: Describing peoples which was consisted of two texts namely describing public figure (Jokowi Dodo) and describing an Idol (Agnes Monica) and Describing places consisted of three texts namely; Azizi mosque, Tangkahan and Bukit Lawang. Each of the text consisted of two kinds of exercise and in the last page of the product were provided the answer keys. Keywords: Reading Learning Material, Supplementary Material, Descriptive text.

Abstract

This study deals with the second year senior high school students’ in reading comprehension. The objective of the study was the investigation of the effect of Panel Discussion on the students’ in reading comprehension. The study was designed in experimental research. The population of this study was the 2015/2016 grade X students of SMA Swasta Dharmawangsa Medan. The total number of population of the study was 415 students which consist of 12 classes. The sample of the research was 60 students. The technique used for obtaining the sample was the cluster sampling technique. The sample classes were divided into two groups, namely the experimental group that was taught by applying Panel Discussion Technique, and the control group that was taught by applying classical Technique. The instrument for collecting data used objective test. The data were taken by administering the pre-test and post-test to both of experimental and control groups. The test was taken and selected from the National Examination test items that were related to the kind of narrative text. So, the validity and reliability of the test items were considered valid and reliable. The data were statistically analyzed by using t-test formula at the level of significance α (0.05) = 1.669 with the degree of freedom (df) = 65. It was found that the t-observed was higher than t-table (t-observed = 4.93 > t-table = 1.669; α = 0.05). It means that Panel Discussion Technique significantly affect the students’ achievement in reading comprehension.  Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Cluster Sampling, Panel      Discussion.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the teacher and students talk percentage, teacher characteristics and the roles of the teacher during classroom interaction classroom interaction at SMPN 1 Berastagi in 2016/2017 academic year. This study used descriptive design. The subjects of this study were 38 students Grade VIII and an English teacher. The data were analyzed by using Flander’s formulates and interaction observation tally sheet. The instrument of collecting data ware observation tally sheet and video recording. The analysis showed that teacher talk percentage was 71,90 %  and  28, 09% for students. It was found that teacher was dominant in talking than student. The teacher highest characteristics found were teacher control means dominated by commands or direction and content cross which were dominated by lecturing and questioning. For the roles of teacher, the two highest were teacher as controller and teacher as resource. From the result the writer concludes that the students were passive in the classroom interaction, on the other hand teacher hold almost the whole activities in the classroom.     Key words: Classroom interaction, Flanders interaction analysis category system

Abstract

This study aimed at describing how the teachers teach reading comprehension of analytical exposition text to the eleventh grade students of SMA in Medan and revealing the underlying reasons of why they do that way. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were two English teachers who taught at the eleventh grade students of two SMA in Medan they were: SMA Negeri 4 and SMA Negeri 12 in academic year 2016/2017. The data were the recorded utterances of the teachers and the students during the teaching reading process and the transcript of the interview which were collected by observing, tape recording, and interviewing and analysed by using Miles and Huberman technique. The findings of the study showed most of the teachers’ ways did not focusing on teaching reading comprehension but rather focusing on teaching the knowledge of genre because they did not provide the use of text structure knowledge which is considered as a help to enhance comprehension. All the underlying reasons of the teachers’ ways in teaching reading comprehension of analytical exposition text did not facilitate comprehension. It was due to the misperception of the concept of teaching reading comprehension. Key words: teaching, reading comprehension, analytical exposition text
