Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the effects of vegetarianism (vegan and semi-vegetarian) among athletes on their nutrient sufficiency and performance. This review is conducted with three steps, namely: literature search and screening; data extraction and analysis; and writing the literature review. The results show that athletes practicing a vegetarian diet may be at a greater risk of nutritional inadequacy especially proteins, essential fatty acids, iron, zinc, calcium, iodine, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. Whilst the effect of vegetarian practice in athletes’ performance has no significant difference with omnivore athletes. vegetarian athletes should plan a well-planned diet to meet the recommendations of macro and micronutrients for the training and recovery phase. At last, vegetarianism in athletes does not affect their performance and their nutritional sufficiency can be maintained by planning well-balanced dietary consumption. Further research is required to broaden our understanding of vegetarianism in athletes

Abstract

According to WHO, public health problems can be considered chronic if the prevalence of stunting is more than 20%, meaning that stunting is a serious health problem in Indonesia. East Java is a province with a high prevalence of under-five and stunted nutritional status, which is 30%-40%. The Malang Regency is one of 100 priority district/city interventions. To help reduce stunting, the Puskesmas unites the growth and development of children under five and provides care to pregnant women. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were among the puskesmas programs which included the provision of Vitamin A, the provision of blood-added tablets and the provision of additional food to pregnant women with chronic energy deficiency conditions with the incidence of stunting in Malang Regency. This research is an analytical survey research using secondary data from the Malang District Health Office. The type of sample used was purposive sampling, namely by selecting the Puskesmas with the highest stunting cases (close to 20% or more) so that 10 Public Health Center were obtained as samples and research sites. The results of the analysis showed that there was no relationship between the administration of blood-boosting tablets and the provision of additional food to pregnant women with chronic energy deficiency conditions with the incidence of stunting in Malang Regency. The importance of conducting further research on the causes of stunting in Malang Regency, caused by stunting is a complex factor, involving various factors.

Abstract

Menstrual cycle disorders are a prevalent health issue among adolescent girls and may be influenced by lifestyle factors and nutritional status. This study aimed to examine the association between allowance, breakfast habits, energy adequacy, protein adequacy, fat adequacy, and nutritional status with menstrual cycle disorders among female students at SMAN 1 Ngamprah. A cross-sectional analytical survey was conducted involving 90 students selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires, 2×24-hour dietary recalls, and anthropometric measurements. The study found a higher prevalence of menstrual cycle disorders among students with above-average allowances, regular breakfast habits, and insufficient intake of energy, protein, and fat. These disorders were also more common in students experiencing both undernutrition and overnutrition. The study concludes that economic factors and nutritional intake are significantly associated with menstrual cycle regularity. Educational interventions promoting balanced diets and effective financial management are recommended as prevention strategies for menstrual cycle disorders among adolescents.

Abstract

Background : Maternal underweight impacts pregnancy outcomes, including low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth, miscarriage, bleeding during labor, and even maternal death, making early detection of maternal underweight essential. The threshold of MUAC ≤23.5 cm has traditionally been used as a predictor for Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in women of reproductive age (WRA), but its sensitivity and specificity in pregnant women remain unknown. Therefore, research is needed to enable early detection of underweight in pregnant women. Objective : This study aims to assess the sensitivity and specificity of MUAC using ROC analysis to detect underweight in pregnant women. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : The design of this quantitative study was crosssectional study. The subjects were 118 pregnant women which selected by a total sampling technique in the Cidadap District of Bandung City. Results : ROC analysis indicated that pregnant women with a MUAC cut-off of ≤21.45 cm can be classified as underweight, with an AUC value of 86.6%, sensitivity of 82.5%, and specificity of 75%. Based on the identified cut-off point, the prevalence of underweight among pregnant women was 22.7%. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : MUAC measurement is a reliable predictor of underweight in pregnant women, demonstrating good sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, a MUAC threshold of ≤21.45 cm is recommended for healthcare providers in Bandung City to detect the risk of underweight in pregnant women.

Abstract

Introduction: Caffeine is known as an ergogenic aid that can enhance sports performance by stimulating the central nervous system and reducing perceived fatigue. Objectives: This study aims to determine the effect of caffeine consumption on increasing upper body power in wrestling athletes. Method: This research employed an experimental design with a pre-test and post-test approach on two groups: an intervention group (n=13) that consumed caffeine at a dose of 3–6 mg/kgBW and a control group (n=13) that consumed a placebo. Upper body power was measured using the chest medicine ball throw test, and the data were analyzed using paired t-tests to examine within-group differences and independent t-tests to compare between groups. Result: Paired t-test results showed a significant increase in power within both groups (p<0.05). However, independent t-test results indicated a statistically significant difference between the intervention and control groups (p = 0,002; p < 0,05), with the intervention group showing a greater increase in power. Conclusion: These findings suggest that caffeine consumption positively impacts the power performance of wrestling athletes. Based on this study, it is suggested that strategic caffeine supplementation may serve as a more effective approach in supporting overall athletic performance.

Abstract

Preconception nutritional preparedness is crucial to support a healthy pregnancy and prevent fetal growth disorders. In Indonesia, many prospective couples lack adequate understanding of this, making audiovisual-based nutrition education a promising approach; however, its effectiveness still requires further evaluation. This community service aimed to improve nutritional knowledge of prospective brides and grooms through a Communication, Information, and Education (CIE) approach using audiovisual media. The intervention was conducted at the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) in Sukajadi Subdistrict, Bandung City, involving 74 prospective couples selected through accidental sampling. A 9-minute video containing information on nutritional needs, preconception issues, and recommended intake served as the educational tool. Evaluation used a one-group pretest–posttest design with a validated and reliable questionnaire. The analysis showed a significant increase in knowledge scores after the intervention (N-Gain = 0.44; moderate category). These results suggest that audiovisual-based CIE effectively enhances understanding of preconception nutrition in an engaging and accessible manner. However, the lack of a control group limits the interpretation of the findings. This activity supports audiovisual media as an alternative strategy for preconception nutrition education to enhance readiness for marriage and pregnancy.
