Abstract

This study deals with the characterization of Ronggur as the main character in Toba Dreams Movie and it was aimed to knowing the characteristics of antisocial personality of Ronggur in the movie. It was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was taken from Toba Dreams movie and the data were which showed actions and dramatic statements from Ronggur and other characters in the movie. The findings of the study showed that the characteristics of antisocial personality of Ronggur are : (1) failure to conform to social norms and respect lawful behaviours with 2 items, (2) deceitfulness with 10 items, (3) impulsivity with 5 items, (4) irritability with 33 items, (5) reckless disregard for the safety of self or others with 7 items, (6) Lack of Remorse with 3 items. The method of characterization and antisocial characteristics used on the main character in Toba Dreams have different meaning. Which in Robert & Jacobs theory of characterization methods presents antisocial personality characteristics, whereas in Schwartz theory antisocial characteristics apply to see the depiction of antisocial personality.

Abstract

This study is about teacher’s oral feedback towards students’ response in speaking skill in SMAS 2 Muhammadiyah Medan. This study aims to find out teacher’s feedback used in English classroom interaction and to find out the reasons why the teacher uses the dominant feedback during teaching and learning process in English classroom interaction at eleventh grade students in academic year of 2019/2020. The subject of this research was 33 students. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were collected by using observation, audio recording, documentation and interview for supported the data. The data were analyzed by using Ellis (2009) theory. The result showed that 17 praise which is (37%), 7 recast which is (15,2%), 6 metalinguistic feedback which is (13%), 13 repetation which is (28,3%), 3 paralinguistic signals which is (6,5%). So the dominant type of feedback used by the teacher in class XI MIA 1 of SMAS 2 Muhammadiyah Medan is praise which is 40%. There are 3 reasons why teacher used the dominant type: (1) the teacher only know the general feedback, (2) to encourage the students to be more enthusiastic in responding to the teacher and (3) the teacher only focused on positive feedback. This research is expected to be an inspiration for other researcher to conduct more conductive research in the future about feedback in learning English.Keywords: teacher’s feedback, response, speaking skill.

Abstract

This study deals with Language Formality used on TV program 'Satu Indonesia Net TV'. The objectives of this study were to find out the level of the language and describe the language formality in  TV  program. This  research  was  conducted  by  using descriptive qualitative Method. The data were the dialogues in program 'Satu Indonesia' special  episode  August  12th   2016 and  17th   December  2016  which  was  taken  from YouTube. The findings indicated that there were four level of formalities found on Program Satu Indonesia. There were 4,87% Frozen,31% Formal, Consultative 21,95 and 18,85% Casual. The most dominant level that is used by the figures in this program was Formal Level. It explained that, the figures from political scale used the language differently based on the context and the situation that is held in a conversation.

Abstract

This research discussed about  taboo language in Batak Toba language at Pajak Sore Padang Bulan Medan which aimed to find out the types, the impacts of  taboo language expression towards customers, and how Bataknese society perceptions towards their taboo language. This research was based on Mahmoud’s theory. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from 25 conversations of male and female participants who become sellers and customers in Traditional Market. The findings showed that there were 25 data, 20 data for the types and the impacts, 5 data for Bataknese society perceptions. The dominant types from taboo words in Batak Toba language is Insult and Slurs with 7 expressions, second is scatology with 5 expressions, followed by epithets with 3 expressions, vulgarity with 1 expression, obscenity with 1 expression. Batak sellers is the dominant use taboo language because it was their habit when they were angry but sometimes it is also a part of their close relationship, it means that how close their relationship, so they can used the taboo language. In the analyzed of the impacts of taboo language towards customers, the dominant impacts were people got offended easily and sometimes they become the people who have the irrational thinking. There were 5 perceptions of Bataknese society perceptions about their taboo language and the dominant perception were sellers and customers could not receive taboo words because they still thought that the language could have a bad impact on children because they would replicate and pronounce the taboo language.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the kind politeness strategy in request which represented in Mangalehen Hata Sipaingot of Mandailing Wedding Ceremony. The descriptive qualitative method used to gain the findings of the data itself. From that findings, 11 requests from 6 speakers has been analyzed. And from those, 21 requests filtered throught transcribing the event. Of all 21 requests, it was found that there were 2 politeness strategies used, they were Bald-On record 6 (28,6%), and Positive Politeness 15 (71,4%). Later on, the positive politeness was the dominant type of politeness since the wedding was a sacred ceremony, the using of positive politeness would be found in many ways. The instrument of this study was recording the event and transcribing them into list. And from that list, the categorization would be easy to exctract the data. Thus the writer found that positive politeness that used also similar to another local tribe wedding ceremony

Abstract

In today's digital era, cases of cyberbullying are living in society, especially on social media. Not infrequently also occurs among the public and famous artists. Cyberbullying has various impacts on its victims. This study discusses the behavior of cyberbullying in the development of a developmental digital world using semiotics approaches with psychoanalysis theory of Carl Jung. This study aims to, (a) find out the types of cyberbullying in Indonesia female artist's Instagram account, (b) describe the cyberbullying which existed in the post of Indonesian female artist's instagram account, (c) explain why the particular type of cyberbullying became dominant in Indonesian female artist's instagram account. This study is a qualitative approach. The data source used in this study is taken from Instagram especially about the life content of artist "Prilly Latuconsina" who has been the victims of cyberbullying. The results show that there are various forms of cyberbullying in her instagram account. There are 7 harassment category, 8 denigration category, and 7 flaming category. The netizens often used harsh and impolite words in the comments.
