Abstract

This study examines the philosophy of language as presented in contemporary master's theses, focusing on the realms of ontology, axiology, and epistemology. The background of the study acknowledges the importance of philosophical inquiry at the master's level and its role in advancing language philosophy. The research objectives are to examine and to categorize the specific domains of the philosophy of language within selected theses, aiming to understand the scope and diversity of discussions in these areas. Employing content analysis and comparative analysis as research methods, the study comprehensively analyzes five master's theses from various disciplines. The technique for data analysis involves a detailed examination of the theses to identify the prevalence and treatment of the three philosophical domains. Research findings reveal a rich tapestry of perspectives on ontology, axiology, and epistemology, each thesis contributing uniquely to the field. The conclusion highlights the complexity and diverse nature of contemporary language philosophy. This study serves as evidence to the varied and intricate discussions shaping the philosophy of language today.

Abstract

Di era globalisasi, kemampuan memahami budaya asing dan melestarikan budaya lokal menjadi kompetensi penting bagi siswa agar mampu berperan sebagai warga dunia yang aktif, bertanggung jawab, dan berakar pada identitas budaya sendiri. Namun, rendahnya kompetensi komunikasi lintas budaya di kalangan siswa SMP menjadi tantangan dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mendampingi guru dan siswa dalam mengimplementasikan model pembelajaran aktivitas komunikasi lintas budaya (AKSIBUDAYA) berbasis Social Networking Sites (SNS), yang merupakan hasil riset dasar kompetitif nasional tahun 2022–2023. Metode kegiatan menggunakan pendekatan Participatory Action Research (PAR) dan Service Learning, yang dilaksanakan melalui tiga tahapan utama: persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Pada tahap pelaksanaan, dilakukan pelatihan dan workshop untuk guru, serta pembelajaran menulis berbasis SNS untuk siswa. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh dua guru dan sepuluh siswa SMP Negeri 14 Binjai. Hasil pengabdian menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman guru terhadap pembelajaran lintas budaya serta kemampuan siswa dalam menulis esai komparatif dengan perspektif budaya melalui media digital seperti Canva. Luaran dari kegiatan ini berupa poster hasil karya siswa, rekognisi mahasiswa sebagai bagian dari MBKM, video kegiatan, serta naskah artikel untuk jurnal terindeks SINTA dan media massa elektronik. Kegiatan ini diharapkan menjadi kontribusi nyata dalam pengembangan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang kontekstual, inklusif, dan relevan dengan tuntutan global.

Abstract

English language learning is mandatory at all levels of school in Indonesia. When acquiring proficiency in the English language, learners frequently experience many challenges, particularly in the domains of speaking and listening. Hence, the researcher examined this matter through the implementation of a study utilizing the Podcast functionality within the Spotify application. One advantage of utilizing this application is its potential to enhance listening proficiency in the context of English language acquisition. Furthermore, its user-friendly interface enables convenient access and utilization at any given time and location. The present study was undertaken on a cohort of German language education students over the years 2020 and 2021. The chosen study methodology involves conducting interviews via the Zoom program, wherein a series of questions are compiled for the participants. The investigation yielded diverse perspectives. In order to enhance their English language proficiency, students must consistently engage in regular practice of speaking and listening activities that are directly relevant to the process of learning the English language. Similar to one's leisure time, it is imperative to utilize available time for the sake of ongoing learning. The study highlights the importance of consistent practice in speaking and listening activities to enhance English language proficiency among students learning English as a foreign language.

Abstract

The effect of COVID-19 outbreak to education is in form of a shift of instructional practices from classroom-based instructions to online technology-based practices. To respond to the needs of technology-based instructional activities, this study developed interactive multimedia utilizing online technology-based platforms featuring Moodle and Thinglink to enhance students' comprehension in listening. This is a Research and Development involving fifty-three students of English literature study program in a state university in North Sumatera as object of the study. This study applies the ADDIE model to develop interactive multimedia learning. Purposive sampling was used to collect the samples for analysis. Tests, questionnaires, and interviews were designed and employed to collect the data. Material and media experts carried out the validation of the product. The paired samples t-test and independent samples t-test were utilized for data analysis. The outcomes are interactive multimedia using Moodle and ThingLink, complete with its tutorials, practices, and tests to boost the students' listening comprehension. Interactive multimedia featuring Moodle and ThingLink was deemed practical to use and effectively increased the students' listening comprehension according to the results of the material and media experts' validation and student response questionnaires.

Abstract

Historical genre and fantasy genre each have its own ups and downs in their recognition and acceptation in the field of literature. This research explored the mixture of both of the genres, the historical fantasy genre. This research aimed to examine the historical representations and its authenticity in The Poppy War novel. The research was conducted by using the approach from McArthur (2008) related to the method on how to represent the past as a historical fantasy novel, as well as how authentic the historical representation by using the approach from Groce & Groce (2005). This research was done using qualitative research design in the form of textual analysis. The result showed that the novel used historical details and referred to historical figures and events as the ways of representing the history. The authenticity of the historical reference can be confirmed by the similarity of the data found in the novel with the secondary and tertiary sources. This research concluded that this novel can be used as a media to learn about historical events that happened during the Second Sino-Japanese War. However, readers needed to remember that the novel is historical fantasy novel that contains fantastical elements that helped the story progressed.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the lexical items, food blogs, and hedges found on Love and Lemons bloggers using the AntConc corpus application based on Crystal and Diemer & Frobenius' theory. This research method uses mixed-method qualitative and quantitative data. The data source for this research was taken from the two most viewed recipes from the Love and Lemons blog entitled breakfast sandwiches and healthy breakfast tacos. This study focuses on the frequency of occurrence of lexical items, hedges and the use of food jargon found in recipes for breakfast sandwiches and breakfast healthy tacos. The results of this study indicate that lexical items found in Breakfast Sandwich (106), modification breakfast sandwich (13), evaluation breakfast sandwich (12) and hedges breakfast sandwich (7). While the classifications of lexical items found in recipe Breakfast Healthy Tacos (47), modification breakfast healthy tacos (13), evaluation breakfast healthy tacos (12), Hedges Breakfast Healthy Tacos (6). Based on the results the lexical contained in the Love and Lemons blog is widely used in the process of making healthy breakfast sandwiches and breakfast tacos. Based on Crystal theory found (8) types of food and (9) connotes of food from recipe breakfast sandwich and (12) types of food, (8) connotes of food from recipe breakfast healthy tacos. Food jargon terms are often used in food processing and food recipes in breakfast sandwich recipes and healthy breakfast taco recipes. Use hedging on the Love and Lemons blog to express a lack of certainty or caution in presenting readers with additional choices or options about which recipe to mix.
