Abstract

One objectives of health development is to improve the ability of healthy life for everyone in order to reach their optimal health degree. There are some physical factors that influence public health, e.g. inadequate illumination. Inappropriate illumination can disturb the health of eyes. The goal of the study was to understand the appropriate level of artificial illumination used for reading activities in Al-Qodir Moslem Boarding School at Tanjung Village, Wukirsari, Cangkringan, Sleman. The study was an experiment with ’post-test only design’. The study subjects were high school level students. Meanwhile, the treatments were 100, 200 and 300 lux artificial illumination. The subjective eyes fatigue symptoms were observed by using questionnaire and then classified as: high, medium, and low. For each illumination treatment, the procentage of the symptom classifications are as follows: 100 lux: high 53,3%, medium 33,3%, low 13,4%; 200 lux: high 13,5%, medium 20,0%, low 66,5%; and 300 lux: high 40,0%, medium 40,0%, low 20,0%. Based on the results, it was concluded that the appropriate illumination intensity for the boarding school was 200 lux, because this treatment was the highest procentage in the low ’category’. Furthermore, it was advised for school managerial board to provide the requisiteillumination by installing 40 watt flourescent lamps or providing 14 watt table lamps; and to avoid excessive glare, the installation should carefully considering the appropriate distance between the lamps and reading areas.

Abstract

Insecticide application is one method that is often used to control mosquito vector because it canrapidly reduce the population in a short time. However, the use of insecticides can introduce problem because it can pollutes the environment, kills non-target organisms, causes resistance among the vector insect and affects human health. One alternative way to kill mosquitoes is to use mosquito trap that have no negative impact. The purpose of this study was to know the effectiveness of various doses of brown sugar (i.e. 25 gr, 50 gr, and 75 gr) and one gr of yeast in a used plastic bottles as mosquito trap, by conducting a quasi-experimental study which followed post-test group design. The study was located at Pasekan Kidul village, in Balecatur, Gamping, Sleman, since based on the 2013 periodic larvae monitoring data, the village had the lowest percentage of larvae free index, among all service areas of Gamping I Community Health Centre.Data of the study were analyzed statistically by using one way anova at 95 % level of confidence, and it came to conclusion that the dose variation of brown sugar have different effectiveness against the number of mosquitoes trapped (p < 0,001), and 75 grams of brown sugar was found as the most effective dose.

Abstract

The incidence of ARI among under five children in Indonesia is still high. It is presumed that oneof the causes is indoor pollution due to smoking and mosquito coils using. The purpose of thisresearch was to prove the relationship between both behaviors and ARI incidence among underfive children in Kelurahan Semarang Kecamatan Banjarnegara by conducting a case control study. There were 30 children for each groups and the data were collected by using questionnaireand were analysed by using Odds Ratio calculations at 95% confidence level to identify themagnitude of the risks. The results show that OR for indoor smoking is as much as 3,05 (95%CI: 1,05-8,84) with p-value less than 0,001; and OR for mosquito coils using is 3,14 (95% CI:1,07-9,27) with p-value less than 0,001, as well. It can be concluded that those two variables under study are risk factors for ARI incidence among under five children in the study site.

Abstract

One of arthopodborne diseases that can be dangerous and even can cause death in human isMalaria, which is transmitted through the bite of Anopheles. Mahkota Dewa (Phaleria macrocarpa) is one of plants that produce saponin, alcoloid and flavonoids which can be used as botanical insecticide. The purpose of this study was to utilize the leaf extract of the plant as insecticide for Anopheles by conducting a true experiment with post test only with control group design and took place at The Vector Laboratory of Environmental Health Department of Yogyakarta Polytechnic of Health. The mosquitoes aged 2-4 days tested in the experiment were reared by the researcher and there were three extract concentrations used to spray the insects, i.e. 30 %, 40% and 50 %. Confounding variables which were controlled are age and feeds of the mosquitoes,temperature and the atomizer. The death of the insects was calculated by using Abbott formula.Data which were analyzed by One Way Anova test at 0,05 level of significance obtained a pvalue less than 0,001 which can be interpreted that various concentrations of Mahkota Dewa leaf extraction give different effects on Anopheles mortality. Based on the subsequent LSD test, it was found that the most effective concentration is 50 %.

Abstract

Fly is one of insect vectors which can transmit microorganisms causing sto- mach diseases such as typhoid, cholera and dysentery. Tuber of Dioscerae hispida D can be used as an alternative for biological insecticide that are safer for the environment, and so that can replace the common inorganic ones which are not environmentally friendly. They study was aimed to understand the influ- ence of various concentrations of Dioscerae hispida D extract spraying towards the mortality of fly at the temporary waste disposing site of Sentolo Market of Kulonprogo, as well as to understand which concentration is the best. The study was an experiment employing post test only with control group design. Tubers of the plant were obtained from the surrounding area. The results using one-way Anova test show that the effect of various concentrations of the insecticides were significantly different (p<0,001). Since the most effective effect is gained from the 44,4% concentration, it is suggested to use this concentration for con- trolling the annoying fly. Further effect of the insecticide on other disease vec- tors such as mosquito and cockroach, may be explored.

Abstract

The floor microbe number at nursing care of Yogyakarta public hospital at 18th of August 2008 did not fulfill the maximum thresholds permitted by the regulation This condition may lead to the incidence of nosocomial infection, so that proper disinfection should be taken into account. The study was aimed to know the most effective dose of cleaning liquid brand “W" using in declining the microbe number. The study was an experiment with pre-test post-test group design. The variation doses observed were 70 ml, 80 ml, and 90 ml which were dissolved into 1 liter water and to be used for 40 m² room width; and were conducted at Dahlia Ward. The floor cleaning process, the sampling and specimen taking process, as well as the microbe examination at microbiology laboratory followed the standard procedures. The data were analysed by using one way anova test and LSD test, and produce results that the declining difference of the microbe number among the three doses was statistically significant; and the most effec- tive dose was 90 ml cleaning liquid which on average could reduce 92,81% of the bacteria. Based on the results, it is advised for the hospital to use this dose for floor cleaning process.
