Abstract

This study examines the sentiment of Indonesian users on the social media platform X regarding the boycott movement of Israeli products. The movement, rooted in the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, reflects strong pro-Palestinian sentiment in Indonesia. Using sentiment analysis techniques, including VADER, 4,002 tweets from October 2023 to August 2024 were analyzed to classify sentiments as positive, negative, or neutral. Results reveal that 63% of tweets express negative sentiment, supporting the boycott movement; 33% indicate positive sentiment, opposing the movement; and 4% remain neutral. Peaks in tweet activity coincide with significant events, such as the Indonesian Ulema Council's fatwa and geopolitical developments. The study also explores factors influencing public engagement, including hashtag usage, timing, and influencer participation. Findings highlight the role of social media in shaping public opinion and mobilizing collective action while contributing to academic discourse on digital platforms as arenas for cultural and political expression.

Abstract

Campaigns in general elections have become a very important part of the implementation of democracy in a country. Indonesia as one of the democratic countries is also inseparable from these activities as part of the culture of democracy. However, the implementation of the campaign itself varies in every democratic country. The implementation of the 2024 elections in Indonesia, especially the Banjarmasin city area, is colored with banners, banners and billboards installed throughout the country. However, the installation of banners and billboards, especially those in the Banjarmasin city area, is still mounted on trees, corners, empty houses, in front of alleys and electric poles. Therefore, this paper raises the research question of how the use of billboards as promotional media in elections can disrupt the environment. Using qualitative methods, data was collected through literature study, documentation and direct observation. Through this research, it can be understood that the use of billboards on trees and public facilities is disruptive as a medium that is not environmentally friendly.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze environmental communication practices in the context of managing the Meratus Geopark natural tourist destination, particularly in the Tahura Sultan Adam Mandiangin area, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan. The approach used is a descriptive, qualitative one, employing Lasswell's communication model framework and Yenrizal's (2017) concept of environmental communication. The research findings indicate that environmental conservation communication practices remain hierarchical and top-down, with government institutions, particularly the Forestry Department, playing a dominant role in communication. Local communities have not been strategically involved in the process of message delivery or in the formulation of management policies for the area. The messages conveyed tend to be technocratic and have not integrated local cultural wisdom, while the media used include banners, the “bottle cage” trash bin innovation, and social media that have not been systematically coordinated. Feedback from tourists indicates a positive effect on conservation messages, but long-term effectiveness still depends on active local community participation and the strengthening of two-way communication. This study recommends the need to strengthen the role of local actors as communicators, integrate cultural values into environmental messages, and optimize digital media as part of a community-based conservation communication strategy.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the construction of student imagery in local media coverage in South Kalimantan during the 2019–2024 period. The primary focus is directed at how students are represented in the context of demonstrations through online media jejakrekam.com and langkar.id. A total of 157 articles were analyzed using instruments based on three main dimensions: Language/Tone, Content Focus, and Content Visibility. This study uses a quantitative-descriptive approach combined with qualitative reading, and is analyzed using the theoretical framework of Agenda Setting, Framing, Social Construction of Reality, and Communication Influence. The results show that both media do not construct the image of students as moral actors or symbols of change as is common in the historical narrative of the Indonesian student movement. The representation of students is mostly neutral and administrative, without strong symbolic content. The media tend to convey the reasons for the demonstrations informatively, but do not highlight the narrative of the impact or sustainability of the student struggle. Although the demonstrations are routinely covered and accompanied by multimedia elements, the distribution of content on social media is relatively low. These findings indicate a tendency towards depoliticization of narratives about students in local media, which has resulted in a weakening of the symbolic and political construction of students in the contemporary public sphere.

Abstract

As a middle power in international relations, Indonesia plays a pivotal role in shaping regional and global affairs, particularly within ASEAN and the G20 frameworks. Over the past decades, Indonesia has strategically positioned itself as a key diplomatic player, balancing its national interests with broader global goals. Its diplomatic actions, especially in these multilateral forums, reflect a combination of soft power and pragmatic policies that aim to maintain stability and foster economic development in Southeast Asia. This study examines Indonesia’s middle power diplomacy, focusing on its strategic role within ASEAN and the G20. It aims to assess how Indonesia uses its diplomatic leverage to influence regional security, economic cooperation, and global governance. The research also explores the challenges and opportunities that Indonesia faces in navigating these two influential organizations. A qualitative approach is employed, utilizing content analysis of official government documents, speeches by key diplomats, and relevant academic literature. Additionally, interviews with policymakers and regional experts provide insights into Indonesia’s diplomatic strategies and objectives. The study finds that Indonesia’s middle power diplomacy is characterized by active engagement, mediation, and consensus-building, which enhances its influence within ASEAN and the G20. Indonesia’s ability to bridge gaps between major powers has solidified its role as a key regional leader. Indonesia’s diplomatic strategy in ASEAN and the G20 highlights its importance as a stabilizing force in both regional and global contexts. Its middle power approach allows Indonesia to shape discussions on global governance, economic development, and security.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the concrete development and implementation of blue economy programs in the future by examining Indonesia's role in the context of international political economy, particularly through maritime diplomacy and cross-regional cooperation such as ASEAN, the Indonesia-Latin America and Caribbean Business Forum INA-LAC, and the Alliance of Island States AIS. Using a constructivist approach, this study concludes that Indonesia, as a middle-power country, utilises soft resources, such as maritime identity, sustainability values, and diplomatic leadership, to strengthen its position in global blue economy governance. The results of the study show that Indonesia has strategic potential for developing and implementing blue economy programs through a combination of diplomatic instruments, international cooperation initiatives, and normative leadership. This role not only strengthens Indonesia's position in global forums such as the 2023 ASEAN Power and the AIS Forum, but also provides advantages in international political economy, particularly in building legitimacy and support from other countries for Indonesia's national interests.
